Chapter and prose (photos)

The life, thoughts and deeds of James K. Baxter have been chronicled
via his prose rather than his poetry, by a man who has been both
friend to and scholar of the New Zealand literary great, writes Shane
Gilchrist.

Victoria University Press has just published Complete Prose of James
K. Baxter, edited by Dr John Weir. It is an enormous undertaking –
four hardback volumes in a box set that John began working on 40 years
ago. The volumes take in Baxter's journals, reviews, letters, stories,
an unpublished novel, letters to the editor, interviews, and
meditations.

Some might say it amounts to divine intervention: the heritage-listed
monastery that graces Wellington's skyline looks like being saved from
a daunting $10 million quake-strengthening bill. St Gerard's Church
and Monastery was yellow-stickered after seismic engineers assessed
the hillside buildings in Mt Victoria as needing major strengthening
to reach or exceed 34 per cent of new building standards.

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST
http://station15.co.nz/
August 17, 2015
Station XV: Episode 95 — Pope, Polls, Polar Priests and Pasta
Pope Francis's summer has surely been soured (#sarcasm) by new polls
in the United States that show his popularity is waning across the
board — with conservatives and progressives alike not as enamoured
with the Pontiff as they were a year ago. The poll comes a few weeks
before his visit to the US. When it comes to Antarctica, though, there
won't be any more visits from Catholic priests, with money and a lack
of demand seeing an end to New Zealand priests ministering on The Ice.
In other news, the divorced and remarried debate continues and a Kiwi
priest with a colourful past gets an important international gig. But
it's the papal declaration on the secret to happiness that has Lucy,
Don, James and Gavin really excited. Enjoy the episode.

http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/08/19/notes-from-rome-popes-man-in-italy-stirs-a-row-over-immigration/
Some years ago, I was meeting a veteran Vatican-watcher from the
States for coffee in Rome. When I arrived, he was deep into scouring
local papers about some controversy involving the Italian Church, and
I asked why he was interested in what seemed mostly a domestic Italian
affair. "Never forget, Italy is the Vatican's R&D department," he told
me. "Things get tried out here, reaction gets tested, before it goes
global" ...
