Actually, he patted Pope John Paul II on the back, but it could have got the Southlander excommunicated, hundreds of people heard at a requiem mass for Boyle on Thursday.

Hutt woman Susana Lemisio honoured for her work for Tokelau community (photo)
Susana Lemisio remembers when she was a girl in Tokelau and would look out at the ocean horizon from the tiny island nation and wonder what was beyond. But even though she made a new home in the Hutt Valley she never forgot her own culture – and she helped many others not to lose touch with their Pasifika roots too.  Mrs Lemisio was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday honours for her services to the Tokelau community and early childhood education.

Catholic church told it must pay $150,000 development fee (photo)
The Catholic church in Christchurch will have to pay a $150,000 development fee after a plea to have it waived was unsuccessful.  City councillors were torn about whether to approve the church's application, but council staff said granting a remission would set a dangerous precedent.
