Like water and oil there are things in this world that do not naturally present themselves as good combinations. Rugby and operatic, for example. Luckily for him no-one ever told refrigeration engineer Pat Rice that. For Pat, who died aged 82, was happily and successfully both a Marist Rugby Club and Hamilton Operatic Society stalwart.

The annual New Zealand Marist football tournament offers many things in a social and competitive environment but this weekend you can add one more benefit.

For the last six and a half years, Alister Castillo, 26, has lived at the Holy Cross College in Auckland, the national Roman Catholic seminary for the training of priests. On September 23 he will commit to a life of religious service.

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

September 16, 2016
Episode 108 — Popes, Saints, Veeps and Zuck

The canonisation of Mother Teresa — now St Teresa of Calcutta — was the big news story of the month, and it takes top billing in this episode of The 15th Station. But news of two Popes isn't too far behind, after an interview with Pope Benedict was released, prompting a flurry of media stories. For Pope Francis, it was him being chosen as the world's most inspirational leader by former NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark and his meeting with Mark Zuckerberg that features on the show. And, with less than two months until the US election, Democrat VP candidate Tim Kaine raised eyebrows with his prediction the Catholic Church might eventually join the ranks of those who support same-sex marriage. Find out if Don, James and Gavin disagree.

'Crux' is a free online magazine of articles on Catholic issues. On Crux now ...

** Pope's inter-faith summit in Assisi belongs to an ongoing revolution
When Pope Francis convenes a summit of religious leaders next Tuesday in Assisi, it's neither maverick nor ho-hum. Instead, it marks the latest chapter in an ongoing revolution.

** Padre Pio shows the Church can be democratic after all
The popular devotion to Padre Pio that propelled him to sainthood shows that the Catholic Church, while not a democracy, is not indifferent to the voice of the people.

** Seeing Trump v. Clinton through Catholic eyes
The dynamics of the 2016 race illustrate some worrying trends in American life, including deepening divisions and rising levels of rage. Seen through Catholic eyes the race also suggests that the Church has a fairly unique capacity to make a difference.

** On anniversary, can we finally catch Benedict's point at Regensburg?
Today marks the 10th anniversary of emeritus Pope Benedict XVI's controversial speech at Regensburg. After a decade of debate, can we finally catch the real point Benedict was trying to make that day? (Hint: It wasn't about Islam.)
