Sadness as last Catholic service held in Lyttelton, after more than
150 years (text and video)
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/125186219/sadness-as-last-catholic-service-held-in-lyttelton-after-more-than-150-years
Dwindling numbers, a priest shortage, and a plan to merge parishes
have led to the "end of an era" when the last Catholic service is held
in Lyttelton. About 200 parishioners, past and present, will attend a
special gathering at the site of St Joseph the Worker Church, which
was destroyed by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

Property developer considering taking on $20 million St Gerard's
church restoration project
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/125204800/property-developer-considering-taking-on-20-million-st-gerards-church-restoration-project
A Wellington property developer says the city's earthquake-prone St
Gerard's Church should be converted into a public facility such as a
university building, and he is considering taking on the job. The fate
of the 113-year-old church and adjoining monastery overlooking
Wellington Harbour remains up in the air, with its owners saying there
are "no immediate plans" for the building beyond its final mass on
Sunday.

STATION XV (podcast)

Episode 162 — Communion, Conscience, Cathedral, Careerism (May 16, 2021)

As debate rages in the US over the reception of Communion by some
Catholic politicians, the panels weighs in on the hot-button topic.
Anna, Don, James and Gavin also look at two major stories in New
Zealand — the reluctance of medical workers to participate in
euthanasia and the impending construction of a new cathedral in
Christchurch. They also discuss Pope Francis' words of wisdom to
newly-ordained priests, although it seems to be good advice for all.
It's a shame a certain fashion designer wasn't getting such good
advice…

Beginning on Monday, over 8,000 migrants either swam around border
fences that jut out into the Mediterranean Sea or simply walked across
the border at low tide to leave Morocco and enter the Spanish enclave
of Cueta, one of nine populated Spanish territories in northern
Africa. As ever, the Catholic church is caught in the crossfire,
scrambling to address immediate humanitarian needs and also to defuse
political tensions ...
