NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

Catholic bishops issue guidelines for working with people who choose "assisted dying" (28 October 2021)
Catholic health professionals, chaplains and priests are being given guidelines and pastoral help to work with people who decide to die under the End of Life Choice Act which takes effect on 7 November. Though the Church opposes the deliberate taking of human life, it cannot turn away those who choose "assisted dying" under the new law, says Bishop of Hamilton Stephen Lowe, the vice-president of the NZ Catholic Bishops Conference ...



** Our bishops have written a pastoral statement and guidelines for health professionals, chaplains and priests to help them work with people who decide to die under the End of Life Choice Act which takes effect on 7 November.

Report into former Dunedin bishop's conduct completed
A draft report has been completed following an investigation into whether a former Dunedin bishop failed to deal with complaints of abuse. In November last year, the Catholic Church appointed an independent investigator to look at whether Bishop John Kavanagh took proper action when he received complaints of sexual abuse during his tenure, between 1957 and 1985.

Young Enterprise Scheme: Together Collective's Abbie Wood wins regional YES competition
A business which is providing opportunities for young artists is the 2021 Taranaki regional winner for the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. The Together Collective is run by Sacred Heart Girls' College student Abbie Wood, 16. She sells clothing with designs created by both herself, and aspiring young artists.

'It feels real now': Work starts on new school built inside former warehouse
You would be forgiven for thinking it was a site visit for a new industrial complex, but this will be Christchurch's newest school – built inside a giant warehouse. Marian College is being retrofitted inside the former Foodstuff distribution centre – one of the largest commercial buildings in the South Island – and after more than two years of planning, work is finally underway.

'Woolly Wedge' wins day
A group of Dunedin school pupils is on a mission to save the New Zealand wool industry ''one doorstop at a time''.
Under the Door Enterprises, from Kavanagh College, created a firm producing and selling woollen doorstops called ''Woolly Wedge''.

Pope calls for 'radical decisions' ahead of major UN summit on climate change
Pope Francis is not going to Glasgow for the United Nations conference on climate change, but that has not dwindled his commitment to the cause, as shown with a five-minute message to the BBC calling for "radical decisions." "We find ourselves increasingly frail and even fearful, caught up in a succession of 'crises' in the areas of health care, the environment, food supplies and the economy, to say nothing of social, humanitarian and ethical crises," Francis said in a pre-recorded message broadcast Friday on Radio 4's Thought for the Day ...
