Dear friends,

The bishops' registered New Zealand Internet address - '
catholic.org.nz ' - has been activated and works fine. Nothing else has
changed. The new address is simply a redirection service. Our pages
remain where they have always been, on the Catholic Online server in
California, and all the familiar page addresses - starting with '
www.catholic.org/newzealand/ ' - will continue to work.

One advantage of having an '.nz' address is that an experienced Internet
user can guess our home page location if they don't know it:
"catholic.org.nz" is Internet-speak for "Catholic organisation in New
Zealand".

Another is that Web addresses beginning with '
www.catholic.org/newzealand/ ' can be shortened by replacing that bit
with 'catholic.org.nz'. For instance the home page address of Hamilton
Diocese is: www.catholic.org/newzealand/hamilton/ The Diocese can now -
if it wishes - show the address as : catholic.org.nz/hamilton/ . Neat,
eh :-)

THE WORD OF THE LORD

"The orchard ... is judged on the quality of its fruit.
Similarly a man's words betray what he feels."
Ecclesiasticus 27

"Planted in the house of the Lord [the just] will flourish in the courts
of our God,
still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green"
Psalm 91 (92)

"For every tree can be told by its own fruit.
People do not pick figs from thorns nor gather grapes from brambles."
Luke 6:44

Dear friends,

The New Zealand Government wants to increase the number of migrants to this country and has made some changes to make it easier for people to qualify. The details are at: http://www.executive.govt.nz/speech.cfm?speechralph=33580&SR=0

There's a new resource Web site: 'Free Resources for Roman Catholics and other Believers'. I haven't had time to explore it properly but I can see useful material there for weekly parish bulletins - "filler" pieces and graphics for instance. The address: http://www.catholic1.com/page2.htm

FROM THE CATHOLIC PRESS

The New Zealand evangelisation magazine 'EV 2000' has ceased publication. It appeared four times a year and full-text articles from it have been published on its Web site at: http://www/catholic.org/newzealand/ev2000/ since December 1997.

I haven't had a chance to discuss the future of the site with either the editor Father Paul Shannahan or with Catholic Communications, but it seems to me that the site's articles will remain a valuable resource for years to come. I'll be casting my vote in favour of keeping them up for all to read. Fr Shannahan is director of the NZ bishops' office for enquiries about the Catholic faith, the Catholic Enquiry Centre. I understand that a Web site for the CEC is in prospect, which will be great.

However there's no denying that in the area of regularly-renewed quality reading on the Internet, we New Zealand Catholics appear to be going backwards! There has been nothing new from either the Wellington archdiocesan newspaper 'Wel-com' or the monthly magazine 'Tui Motu' since July last year, and now 'EV 2000' has ceased. That leaves only the fortnightly 'NZ Catholic' newspaper and the newsletters of Caritas and a number of educational bodies. We still have a substantial Internet presence in the 'directory' sites of our dioceses and schools', but to get people to come back to a site you need a regular flow of fresh things to read.

>From 'NZ Catholic' No 106, February 11, 2001 http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/press/nzc/page2.html [PLEASE NOTE: Theses stories will not appear on the 'NZ Catholic' Web site until next Monday or Tuesday]

'Children ?invisible? in making of Govt policy' WELLINGTON - The invisibility of children in the development of Government policy is hurting children, families and New Zealand, say the authors of a report released last month. According to the Child Poverty Action Group, New Zealand is paying the price of neglect of children in policy, as seen in such things as learning difficulties, drug use, crime, unemployment, and physical and mental ill health ... 'Newest school opens door' MT MAUNGANUI - New Zealand's newest Catholic school has opened its doors for the start of the academic year. 'Friends recall murder victim's passion, flair ' The Press 27 Jan. 2001 [Summary only. Not available online] Murdered jogger Margaret-Lynne Baxter was remembered for her passion, sense of fun and flair for fashion by the people at her funeral in Wellington. The 38-year-old investment worker died in Hawkes Bay on Sunday. Police suspect she was hit by a car while jogging, bundled into a vehicle and later killed. Ms Baxter was remembered by 400 friends and family, who packed St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in central Wellington yesterday. Father Michael McCabe said the family was trying not to be bitter about Ms Baxter's death. Her mother, Pip, had told him she was praying for forgiveness "as I pray each night for Lynnie's gentle soul", Fr McCabe said. As a tribute to her, the family wanted people to be as creative as possible and live life to the full. During the service, a slide-projector showed photographs of Ms Baxter at various stages in her life. At the end, as her family carried her coffin out of the church, Millennium, sung by British pop star Robbie Williams, was played. She was buried alongside her father, Jim, who died 14 years ago, at Makara Cemetery, 10km west of Wellington. --NZPA

Embryo tests attacked The Evening Post 24 January 2001 [Summary. Full text not available on-line] Embryos are human lives and shouldn't be killed in experiments, says Bishop Peter Cullinane, president of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops' Conference. He has challenged the interim approval given by the Ministry of Health's national ethics committee this week for an embryo-testing scheme. Auckland-based Fertility Associates wants to introduce a screening process that will separate healthy embryos from those unlikely to develop into viable pregnancies for its in-vitro fertilisation programme. Bishop Cullinane said the public wasn't served well if an ethics committee approved experiments that ended lives.

FROM THE CATHOLIC PRESS

Sorry to say, the stories from this year's first issue of 'NZ Catholic' haven't appeared on its Web site. I hope and believe that this is an oversight and that the regular full-text articles will go up next week, or at least from the next issue, especially as the 'Wel-com' newspaper and 'Tui Motu' magazine sites appear to have 'gone dead'.

In the meantime here's something to go on with.

In the latest issue of the U.S. weekly 'National Catholic Reporter' there are two comprehensive articles by Paul Wilkes, the author of 'Excellent Catholic Parishes: The Guide to Best Places and Practices', due to be published by Paulist Press next month. A companion volume, 'Excellent Protestant Congregations', which Wilkes also wrote, will be published in April. The two volumes will be the basis for a Pastoral Summit, a gathering of leading U.S. Catholic and Protestant pastors and lay leaders from May 30-June 1 in New Orleans. Its Web site is: http://www.pastoralsummit.org

In this week's issue of the U.K. Catholic weekly 'The Tablet' there's a thoughtful article by a mother of pre-teen children telling how she encourages them to pray.

You can open both papers' Web sites from the bishops' Overseas Catholic Press link on http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/press/frpress.html This selection could be broader and I hope I'll receive the go-ahead from Catholic Communications some time soon to add a few more titles from the rich treasury of online Catholic periodicals.

'Pope visit unlikely ' The Evening Post 17 Jan 2001 [Summary. Full text not available online] "The Catholic Church has not publicized a Vatican suggestion that Pope John Paul II could visit New Zealand later this year because his fragile health makes such a visit unlikely, says the Church's director of communications, Lyndsay Freer. A Rome newspaper on Monday reported a Vatican statement that the Pope could visit Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia in the second half of this year ...." - NZPA

[The background: In 1998 the Special Assembly of the bishops of Oceania took place in Rome (1). It was one of a series of assemblies of bishops from every region of the world in preparation for the Great Jubilee, to consider the current situation and future challenges for the cause of Christ in their regions. Since then a working party of bishops has been preparing a call to action based on the special assemblies' discussions. As recently as May last year (2) Cardinal Williams expected that Pope John Paul would come to New Caledonia (a French territory in the Pacific, north of New Zealand) after Easter 2001 to personally present the working party's document to the Catholic people of Oceania.

'Biblical backing for exorcism ritual ' NZ Herald 8 Jan 2001 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=167656 "In the Bible's New Testament, Jesus cast out the Devil from those who were possessed. Since then, exorcism - banishing the Devil from people or places - has been a part of Christianity and also appears in other religions. Catholic Church representative Lyndsay Freer said the Church believed people and places could be possessed by the Devil - and exorcisms were occasionally carried out in New Zealand ..."

NEWS OF THE GREAT JUBILEE
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

The Jubilee Year has now ended and I have just finished an overhaul of the Jubilee pages on the bishops' Web site. The main change is to the News page which now has small selection of links to reports of some major events of the Year, in two groups:

* 'In New Zealand' - seven reports from the local secular press of Jubilee events in this country, most with photos

* 'In Rome and the Holy Land' - Links to reports of eleven major events

Other projects on the drawing board for our bishops' Web site include a short biography of Pope John Paul with 'further reading' links and pictures, and a complete redesign of the pages with a smart 'new century' look.

The New Zealand Catholic press hasn't yet started publishing after our (southern hemisphere) summer holiday break, but here's something interesting from overseas:

'The Catholic Church: Strength in Division?' by Stephen Cviic INFO BRAZIL June 30 - July 06, 2000 http://www.infobrazil.com/Conteudo/Front_Page/Opinion/Conteudo.asp?ID_Noticias=3\ 05&ID_Area=2&ID_Grupo=9 [The article describes how cooperation between two major 'currents' within the Brazilian Catholic church - social reformers and Charismatics - has revitalised the Church in that country]

I found this article on the 'Theological Editions' Web site, at: http://www.theologicaleditions.com As some other sites do for general literature, this one searches the World Wide Web for full-text English-language articles on religion, and presents a short summary of them and a link to the full article. The other interesting thing is that this service is New Zealand-based! The editor is Graeme Davis in Palmerston North (I think; either that or in Wellington).

I plan to draw the editor's attention to significant articles appearing on the Web sites of the New Zealand Catholic press this year (and everybody else is can do the same, of course; the more the merrier). But in any case there's quite a bit of Catholic-interest material already on the site.
