New Zealand Catholic Church admits 38 sexual abuse cases and offers apology *******************************************
"Catholics lift secrecy veil on sex abuse " NZ Herald 22.06.2002 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=2048083&thesection=news&thesu\ bsection=general The Catholic Church in New Zealand has revealed that 38 confirmed cases of sexual abuse have been committed by men in its ranks. Bishops from the country's six dioceses told the Weekend Herald that committees set up in the early 1990s to deal with sexual abuse complaints had substantiated 38 claims going back to the 1950s....
"Judgment day for nine black sheep of the faith " NZ Herald 22.06.2002 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=2048019 The following nine priests and brothers have gone before the courts charged with sex offences since 1990. Others have been investigated by the police and no further action taken, or dealt with internally by the Catholic Church....

A ride through the suburbs of Sydney takes them to the leafy grounds of a private psychiatric hospital. This is where Catholic brothers and priests have been confronting the demons that have troubled them and stirred the entire church.... [The article concludes with details of abuse compensation payments by three religious orders]
"Scandal in the Church " (Editorial) The Press (Chch) 20 June http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,1241069a1937,FF.html The extent of the contagion of sexual abuse that is sweeping the Catholic Church is shown by Press reports today and yesterday.... This emphasises the reality that the scandal is far from occurring commonly only in the American and Australian churches, and that it is being poorly handled....
[The next four reports all refer principally to abuse at the former Marylands Residential School in Christchurch staffed by St John of God Brothers]
"Sex abuse victim paid $95,000" Otago Daily Times 22-June 2002 http://www.odt.co.nz/cgi-bin/search-display-story-online-new?date=22Jun2002&obje\ ct=0621437193&type=html&WORDS=catholic&DB=Editorial A Christchurch man has been paid nearly $95,000 by a Catholic order for sex abuse he suffered at the city's Marylands boarding school in the 1970s. Several more people have emerged to tell their stories and seek justice from the St John of God Order at the centre of the escalating transtasman sex scandal....

"The other side" (Readers' comments) Stuff/INL 19 June 2002 http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,1240976a4621,FF.html (full text) I would like to make a brief comment for the sake of contributing to a balanced view of whether or not Catholic priests and brothers are sexual abusers. I spent five years (1978 to 1982) at a Catholic high school (St Johns College, Hastings) and never had an experience of even a slight inclination of being "inappropriately approached" or never heard of anything untoward happening to my fellow students. Just putting in a true word for the honest, hardworking priests and brothers that taught me so well. - Chris Burke

CANONISATION OF PADRE PIO
On Monday our time in St Peter's Square Pope John Paul II will canonise Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (Francesco Forgione 1887-1968).
Padre Pio was born in southern Italy. He was ordained a priest of the Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1910 and from 1916 lived most of the rest of his life at San Giovanni Rotondo. In 1918 the stigmata (the wounds of crucifixion) appeared on his hands and feet. He became famous throughout the Catholic world and brought about many conversions through the combination of his profound spirituality and his astonishing supernatural gifts.
You can make the acquaintance of Padre Pio in words and pictures here: http://www.ewtn.com/padrepio/

***************************** "Church must not be silent on abusive priests " (Letter to the Editor, and response by Catholic Communications NZ) Otago Daily Times 15 June 2002 [Full text follows]
I am disturbed to read ( ODT , 20.5.02) that a senior source in the Roman Catholic Church believes that the church has "no legal or moral responsibility" to expose abusive priests, provided that they believe the priest will not abuse again. Does this simply mean that they have no morals? The Rev Gianfranco Ghirlanda is quoted as saying that bishops must protect the "good name" of their priests, apparently in fear that if exposed the priest would not be able to carry on his work. That is the point! These obnoxious beasts must, on release from prison, never be allowed within a mile of another church choir.
May we have a clear and unequivocal assurance from the heads of the church in New Zealand that each and every allegation of a transgression of this type will immediately be referred to the police for investigation and possible prosecution? It is not enough to remain silent on these matters as to do so is to assume equal guilt. I urge all members of the Catholic Church to tell their hierarchy, in total unambiguous terms, exactly what is expected of them in this area. R.E. Mawson, Mosgiel
[Lyndsay Freer, National Communications Director for the Catholic Church, replies:
"The healing of those who have been offended against, and the protection of all vulnerable people in our community from such abuse, is the primary consideration of the Catholic Church in New Zealand. Our procedures for dealing with complaints of sexual abuse are contained in a public document called A Path to Healing. This can be viewed on our website - http://www.catholic.org.nz.
"In past times, the church, like other professions and groups in society, did not fully realise the recidivistic nature of paedophilia. This is now clearly understood, and offenders today are promptly removed from public ministry. All complaints of sexual abuse are taken seriously and fully investigated by the church. Complainants who wish to take their complaint to the police are given every assistance by the church to do so. However, some do not wish to go to the police and request confidentiality before they will proceed with a complaint. We have to respect their wishes in this regard, even though reporting to the police might be a preferred option. I can assure your correspondent that there is no question of protection' for sexual offenders in the Catholic Church in New Zealand today."]

SEXUAL ABUSE SCANDAL
"Does Nolan go too far?" The Tablet Saturday, 25 May 2002 http://www.thetablet.co.uk/cgi-bin/archive_db.cgi?tablet-00633 [Summary] Last September the bishops of England and Wales accepted the recommendations of the Nolan Committee on the protection of children in Catholic parishes and institutions: the safety of the child should be paramount; anyone accused of child abuse must be removed from contact with children during the investigation; accused parish priests are to be are suspended from active ministry and must leave their homes.
This article reports the reservations of two UK diocesan priests about the policy: because a malicious allegation can destroy a priest's reputation, it should be possible for him to remain in the presbytery while the investigation is being carried out and to prevent his name appearing in the media; and the response of Eileen Shearer head of the bishops' Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults: because of the covert and repetitive nature of sexual abuse, sweeping measures are required to root it out; false allegations are statistically rare and the innocent have nothing to fear

PAPAL VISIT TO AZERBAIJAN AND BULGARIA
"Enough of wars in the name of God! No more profanation in His holy name..." (Pope John Paul in Baku, Azerbaijan, 22 May 2002)
On Thursday Pope John Paul resumed the series of bridge-building visits to countries with Orthodox and Moslem majorities. He briefly visited the Moslem nation of Azerbaijan, where he met representatives of Islam, the Orthodox Church, and Judaism to affirm his conviction that religion must not serve to increase rivalry and hatred, but to promote the love of one's neighbour.
He is now in the mainly Orthodox nation of Bulgaria. He will confer with the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church, visit the historic monastery of Rila, and canonise three Catholic martyrs of the Communist era.
The official Website of the Papal visit to Bulgaria is here: http://www.popeinbulgaria.com The site includes daily reports of the papal visit, comprehensive information on the panorama of Christianity and other faiths in Bulgaria - including a link to the English-language Website of the Bulgarian Orthodox church - and plenty of information about the country in general. It includes the remarkable story of how the Jewish community of Bulgaria was saved from deportation and extermination during World War II.
Daily reports from the secular press on the Pope's journey - in print, audio and video - are here: http://fullcoverage.yahoo.com/fc/World/Pope_John_Paul_II/

"Catholic church closing " Otago Daily Times 6-May 2002 (full text) Ngapara's Catholic Church is to close with a special mass conducted by the Bishop of Dunedin, the Most Rev Len Boyle, on May 26. One of the building's special features is a spectacular stained-glass window showing the Last Supper, although only one of the original three panels remains - the other two were damaged by vandals. Services have not been held at the church since last year, with the number of parishioners declining; some already go to Oamaru or Kurow for mass. BETHLEHEM SIEGE
Jerusalem, May 10 2002 (Zenit.org).- Following the lifting of the siege of Bethlehem's Basilica of the Nativity, the Franciscans said the outcome shows how peace is reached through dialogue, not violence. "In this case cooperation and willingness to dialogue have been the sole source of this ray of light that may be a step forward toward a global plan for a stable peace," the minister general of the Friars Minor, Father Giacomo Bini, said in a message to ZENIT. The Franciscans make three appeals to all people of good will:
The first: "Help us to heal the wounds opened by this conflict between two peoples who can and must live together in the same land."
The second: "Help us to rebuild a culture of coexistence, to not be ashamed of this period of our history in which we have witnessed these tragedies without being able to stop them.´"
The third: "Help us to continue to hope in a peace that is possible, based on justice and forgiveness."
The Franciscans also thanked all those who supported the men and women religious who were confined in the Monastery of the Nativity during the siege: John Paul II, the politicians and diplomats who helped, and the journalists, who reported on their situation.

EVANGELISATION
"Promoter of Parish Cells of Evangelisation to Speak at Centre" Catholic Adult Education Centre, Archdiocese of Sydney http://www.caec.com.au/[I have included this Australian event and the associated links because someone in New Zealand might want to follow up the idea of Parish Cells of Evangelisation. ML]
Don Pi.Gi. Perini, the priest responsible for the world-wide spread of the system of Parish Cells of Evangelisation, a program of parish renewal, is to speak at the Adult Education Centre later this month. When Fr Perini took over his parish of San Eustorgio some years ago, it was dying, with very few people attending Mass. He came upon the idea of forming small groups or cells of his parishioners who would pray together, support one another, reflect on the Sunday Gospel and endeavour to invite non-practising Catholics to join the group. When the group had doubled they would divide into two and begin again. With prayer and persistence they slowly brought their parish back to life as the first cells grew and multiplied to more than 100 cells. The system, which he called Parish Cells of Evangelisation has since spread to 28 countries, including Australia. It has had particular success in de-christianised France. Fr Perini will be accompanied to Sydney by Fr Eugene Ahern, parish priest of St Francis of Assisi Parish in Mill Park, Victoria, who began Cells in his parish three years ago and now has 150 parishioners involved. Given the widespread interest in the movement, Fr Ahern invited Fr Perini to Australia, and will answer questions on how Cells work in the Australian context.

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY
Rome (Fides) - "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons to the great adventure of using its potential to proclaim the Gospel message. This challenge is at the heart of what it means at the beginning of the millennium to follow the Lord's command to "put out into the deep" / "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). In his message for the 36th World Communications Day, celebrated on the Feast of the Ascension, Pope John Paul II underlines the "magnificent opportunities for evangelization" offered by the Internet if used with competence and clear awareness of its strengths and weaknesses. In particular the fields in which the Internet can be of concrete help for evangelization are education about the Christian message and continuing instruction and catechesis.
