WORLD CATHOLIC NEWS

In August - mid-summer in Europe - the main European-based Catholic News agencies close down for about a month. Zenit, Fides and the Vatican Information Service (VIS) fall silent at this time.

The only exception that I know of is MISNA ( http://www.misna.org/eng/default.htm ) which chiefly reports political and economic news form the underdeveloped world. The Website of the UK paper The Tablet continues to publish a weekly news digest as usual and in the U.S. the daily EWTN service is uninterrupted, though a bit short on fresh news as a large part of its content come form the European services. There are links to both The Tablet and EWTN on the bishops' Website: http://www.catholic.org.nz and click 'News'.

WORLD YOUTH DAY, TORONTO, JULY 2002

WYD culminates with a Mass on Sunday (Toronto time), following an all-night vigil (going on about now) and a Way of the Cross last Friday. The Canadian Catholic Radio Website is now transmitting live video and audio broadcasts of the WYD events: http://www.catholicradio.ca/catrad.htm

The Yahoo! News of Pope John Paul page: http://fullcoverage.yahoo.com/fc/World/Pope_John_Paul_II/has a good selection of reports on WYD from the (mainly US) secular press, highlighting in particular the remarkable empathy between the 82-year-old Pope and young Catholics. It's likely that this page will continue to give comprehensive coverage of the next stages of Pope John Paul's travels in the Americas, to Guatemala and Mexico in the coming week.

Both Zenit News agency - http://zenit.org/english/ - and EWTN -http://www.ewtn.com/vnews/headlines.asp - publish the full text of Pope John Paul's homilies and addresses at WYD and other reports about the event.

The top of the list is dominated by members of the Christian-based Future New Zealand, which went into a coalition with Mr Dunne's United Party in November 2000. Gordon Copeland, number two on the list and a member of Future New Zealand, is the financial administrator of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington. Two years ago, he convened Celebrate Jesus 2000, which attracted 27,000 Christians from all denominations to the WestpacTrust stadium in Wellington....

"Priest worked long and well for community " Otago Daily Times Saturday, 20-July 2002 [Full text] Invercargill: One of New Zealand's longest-serving Catholic priests, Father John Pound, died in Southland Hospital this week. He celebrated his 87th birthday before entering hospital for surgery. Plans to mark the 65th anniversary of his ordination to the Catholic priesthood on June 29 were modified, with visiting family and friends joining him for prayers at the hospital chapel. Father Pound was born in Invercargill and, at 22, was one of the youngest priests to be ordained. He studied in Rome. He retired 20 years ago to live at Sacred Heart in Waikiwi and then at St Mary's Basilica Presbytery in Tyne Street, still ministering. He was also a stalwart of the Invercargill Repertory and Musical Theatre societies. Father Pound was awarded the MBE in 1984 for community services, which included radio broadcasting, being chairman of the now-defunct Southland Council of Churches, his work as a foundation member of the National Society on Alcoholism and involvement with Rotary International. - NZPA

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES WEEK

This Week, just ended, aimed to encourage New Zealanders' interest in learning foreign languages for the pleasure of doing so and as a means of broadening our cultural horizons. It gives me my excuse to mention a new book I had a hand in translating: "Esperanto: the New Latin for the Church and for Ecumenism" by Ulrich Matthias. A full-text version of it is on the Web here: http://home.t-online.de/home/Ulrich.Matthias/latin_en.htm A thing to bear in mind about the Web version is that for copyright reasons it is only a first draft translation by several hands; the uneven parts were sorted out later for the print edition. Even so I recommend the book as a fascinating read to anyone who interested in the history of Christianity in the twentieth century, or in communication in the Universal Church, and to anyone who simply loves languages.
