FROM THE CATHOLIC PRESS

"A challenge; then the hush descends"
Catholic Weekly (Sydney) 24 Nov 2002
http://www.catholicweekly.com.au/02/nov/24/18.html
Hyperactive, uncontrollable children crawling around my seat and pulling
things out of my bag, children continually yelling at the top of their
lungs, the use of language which would make my mother's hair curl. Who
in their right minds would endure this? State school scripture teachers.
Why on earth would they do that? Some might ask: "Why put yourself
through it?"...

(From Ana Samway's 'Sideswipe' column in the NZ Herald )

Who would have guessed the Catholic Church had more of a sense of humour
than the winemaker over Sideswipe finding a mass grave of Taittinger
bottles in its recycling bins: Michael Brajkovich, of Kumeu River Wines,
writes: "Less of a Sideswipe than a Cheap Shot, really, and all when we
thought the Herald was getting so much better. If you had any
journalistic integrity you would be aware that these bottles were the
remnants of a fundraising dinner for the Catholic Caring Foundation. The
Taittinger Champagne was purchased at cost, not retail, and the Kumeu
River Wine was donated. They were consumed by paying guests, and not
used for communion, as mischievously implied ... "

Catholic Communications demonstrated a healthier sense of humour by
issuing this statement. "Living the highlife at Catholic Headquarters? A
nicely nuanced piece and pic in today's Sideswipe column! But some
clarification is called for, just in case your readers are left with an
impression of extravagant living at the Catholic Church's HQ ... The
wine was donated for a charity dinner on Tuesday night put on by the
Catholic Caring Foundation. This raised over $70,000 for community
charities which include emergency housing and women's refuges. It
augments the $176,000 which has already been donated this year to
community projects in the Auckland and Northland regions by our Caring
Foundation."

A children's Christmas parade has taken a sour political turn with
organisers refusing entry to an anti-abortion lobby group. A float
representing the Upper Hutt branch of the Society for the Protection of
the Unborn Child (Spuc) was been told it's not welcome at the Hutt City

It was a little slice of Poland in the Mary Queen of Peace Church on
Saturday. The congregation packed the tiny church, with some girls and
women wearing traditional dress with flowers in their hair, to bless a
rosary and crucifix brought from Poland, and to unveil a commemorative
plaque. The Roman Catholic church, built in 1889 by Polish immigrants,
is slowly being restored to its original condition....

Vanier’s smile died a quick death. “You know what Dorothy Day said about that.” Taking the cue, I repeated the famous line from the founder of the Catholic Worker movement: “Don’t call me a saint. "Diocese to probe claim of forgery " Waikato Times 09 November 2002 [Full text] The Hamilton Catholic Diocese is investigating allegations that voting papers were forged in a Huntly school's trustee board election. The Education Ministry ruled the September 6 election of three trustees at St Anthony's Catholic School, Huntly, invalid. St Anthony's school board has asked the diocese to investigate the election. Diocesan manager Geoff Kay said an independent investigator would be appointed within a week. Returning officer Greg Murphy, from Huntly, suspected 20 of the votes cast were forged because they did not have an identification number. Two of the three elected candidates would not have been appointed if those 20 votes were not counted, he said. St Anthony's board chairman Mike Meyrick is not convinced the votes were forged. He said he had not seen enough evidence to prove that. Meanwhile, another board election was held this week. The results will be announced on Monday.

They will meet Prime Minister Helen Clark, deputy Michael Cullen, Social Services Minister Steve Maharey, Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia and Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Tariana Turia. The group had four meetings with Prime Minister Helen Clark and her ministers during the last Government. The church leaders will put forward recommendations on increasing the level of superannuation, reducing child poverty by lifting family support payments and initiating housing policies to meet the needs of low income households. They will also voice their concerns on the spread of poker machines in low-income areas. They plan to reiterate their opposition to a war on Iraq and commend the Government for supporting a UN-led solution.

He was environmental when interest in the environment was in its infancy; he had a vision for the Solomon Islanders that would have stood them in good stead for generations if he'd been allowed to see it fully through; and he had a constant concern for justice, even if it meant interfering with cultural traditions (when a father procrastinated because he wanted to keep his daughter working at home, Loughnan aided her and her fiancé to elope!).

**A fair and just solution? : a history of the integration of private schools in New Zealand / Rory Sweetman. Palmerston North : Dunmore Press, in association with the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the Association of Proprietors of Integrated Schools, 2002. 379.32 SWE Subjects: Education and state--New Zealand. Politics and education--New Zealand. Catholic schools--New Zealand. Private schools--New Zealand.

**Why I am a Catholic, by Garry Wills. Boston : Houghton Mifflin, c2002. 282 WIL Notes: In this "unintended sequel" to his 2000 book, Papal Sin, Wills tries to answer the many readers who asked why he remains a Catholic even as he has criticized its authority figures, especially the current pope. He begins with a brief personal look at his life as a Catholic, which includes time spent as a Jesuit novice, then proceeds with a detailed defense of his views on the church and its papacy. He concludes with an explanation of the Apostles' Creed, which he regards as the true foundation of his faith. Wills's detractors may be surprised to learn that he has had a largely positive church experience, refreshingly bereft of the kind of stereotypical bad memories that have marked other recent Catholic memoirs. For Wills, a Catholic can be both loyal and critical, a loving child who stays with his father even if the parent is wrong. He has remained Catholic, he says, because his faith is based on "the great truths of salvation" found in the creed, which he believes Catholicism has played a major role in preserving.

**Stages of the soul : the path of the soulful life, by Paul Keenan. Lincolnwood, Ill. : Contemporary Books, c2000. 248.2 KEE Notes: Father Paul Keenan is Director for the Radio Ministry of the Archdiocese of New York. In this book, Fr Keenan teaches the language of the soul. Sharing his personal stories and those of others, Father Keenan shows us the soul's voice with the aim of moving us from the abyss to a life of soulfulness, where we can truly hear the music of inner guidance, wisdom, purpose, and awe. He explains that "Wonder is having at least one foot in eternity," and how compassion connects us to each other through the sharing of gifts of joy, soul wisdom, and purpose.

Molokai : the story of Father Damien, by Hilde Eynikel. London : Hodder & Stoughton, 2000. 922.2 DAM Notes: Published to coincide with the release of the film, this is the true story of a 19th-century Belgian priest who almost single-handedly changed the lives and fates of the lepers of a Hawaiian colony.

For the love of God : the faith and future of the American nun, by Lucy Kaylin. New York : William Morrow, c2000. 271.9 KAY

Wounded prophet : a portrait of Henri J. M. Nouwen, by Michael Ford. London : Darton, Longman & Todd, 1999. 922.2 NOU Notes "...a compelling portrait of an attractive and complex human being, someone for whom the priesthood was central, but who struggled with the living out of his vocation"

APOSTOLIC LETTER "ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE"

With his latest Apostolic Letter, Pope John Paul hopes to inspire a revival of the Rosary, the centuries-old distinctively Catholic contemplative prayer. To that end, the Pope has declared October 2002 to October 2003 the 'Year of the Rosary' as a framework in time for his hoped-for rosary renewal movement and has instituted a new series of "mysteries" (events in the life of Christ for contemplation during the rosary). In addition to the present three - the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries - we now have the Luminous mysteries (or "Mysteries of Light") : Jesus' baptism in the Jordan; the first public miracle at Cana; the commencement of his public ministry, proclaiming the Kingdom of God and calling to conversion (Mk 1:15); his Transfiguration on Mt.Tabor; and his institution of the Eucharist.

John Paul also wants to encourage a renewal of the way in which the rosary is prayed, reminding that it is intended to be a contemplative prayer - not a racing commentary - and that with some creative preparation it can be a deeply satisfying source of spiritual nourishment for the journey of life.

As usual, the Apostolic Letter is long (43 sections) and densely packed with spiritual insights, historical references, recollections and recommendations. I have listed the titles of the principal subsections of the Letter below in the hope that one or two will catch the eye of some of our readers, and that they will at least read those sections of the Apostolic Letter which interest them and be rewarded accordingly.

God bless, Mike Leon
