THE NATHANIEL REPORT

Issue fourteen ...

Editorial: Abortion - Technology and Truth (full text)
One in four pregnancies in New Zealand now end in abortion, compared with
one in ten two decades ago. The reasons are complex and need to be examined
within the context of some very significant demographic and sociological
changes. A focus on changing the law would, by itself, be an inadequate
approach to dealing with the increasing abortion rate....

Also in this issue ...

Update on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (HART) Bill
This piece identifies changes to the HART Bill recommended by the Health
Select Committee as the Bill enters the House to be debated by the Committee
of the Whole House. It also highlights those matters which, from a Catholic
perspective, are of 'grave concern'.

Clinical - Ethical Judgements without "short cuts"
This article by Australian moral theologian Gerald Gleeson explores the
debate among Catholic ethicists regarding the obligations towards
persistently unresponsive (PVS) patients and identifies two "short cuts"
that are commonly deployed in this debate.

Aged Health Care and Ethical Business Practice
A reflection by a practitioner in the field of leadership development and
management assessment, this article sets out three theories of leadership
behaviour which form the background to a series of questions designed to
stimulate those involved in aged care to reflect on the ethical nature of
their own behaviour.

Most Poles are Catholic and on Good Friday processions would be held at each church to take the statue of Jesus from the altar and place it in a tomb. The church would be in darkness until the service early on Sunday morning when the statue would be brought back from the tomb and placed on the altar. After Mass, everyone would spread the good news, telling everyone they met "He is risen" ....

Mikaele Laufiso, secretary of the Samoan Advisory Council of Chiefs, is Catholic and the 40 days of Lent which lead up to Easter are days of fasting and prayer, especially on Fridays. Then, after church on Easter Sunday, the family or a church group will get together for a feast....

A patient alongside patients, the Pope writes to priests, saved so that they may save http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=2812 Vatican City (AsiaNews) - "From Gemelli Hospital, Rome, March 13, 2005", is more than how John Paul II's Letter to Priests for Holy Thursday begins; it resonates with the fact that this year more than before, the Pope was "a patient alongside other patients uniting in the Eucharist my own sufferings with those of Christ." But, the Pope writes, "I entrust to [Our Lady] especially the elderly, the sick, and those in difficulty." Thus, despite a life of pain, sickness, crosses to bear, a priest performs his duties, grateful to God for a life that is saved in order to save. In the letter the Pope sees the priesthood as a life of gratitude, a life given and saved so that the priest can save others, a life that remembers Christ and is consecrated to and centred on Him.

POPE JOHN PAUL

News of the Pope from the secular press, constantly updated: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=pope&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d

Radio New Zealand Newswire - 26/02/2005 (full text) A spokesperson for the Catholic Church, Lindsay Freer, says Catholics throughout the country will be praying for the health of Pope John Paul at this weekend's masses. The Vatican says the pontiff is recovering normally after surgery, to ease breathing difficulties caused by flu. Surgeons performed a tracheotomy yesterday, inserting a tube into the Pope's throat to help him breath more easily. Mrs Freer says the 84-year old, although very frail, is still in full command of his intellectual capacities. She says most churchgoers appear to support whatever decision he makes about whether to step down or remain as head of the Church.

Vatican Sees Pope's Suffering As Message http://www.620ktar.com/?nid=46&sid=29095 Vatican City (AP) - Young and vigorous when he assumed the papacy, Pope John Paul II has been a picture of pain and suffering in recent years, a bent figure with trembling hands and quavering voice. Yet the 84-year-old pontiff appears intent on playing out his agony for all the world to see _ sending out a message of dignity, courage and acceptance of the trials of life....

We all try to make it to Mass every Sunday. However at our parish church there are hardly any children at all, so Mass is very quiet, which can make the sound of a talking child seem disruptive in comparison. Meeting him was like meeting a father who opened the door to the truths of life and to a commitment to the world. Back then I lived my faith in a pietist way and my commitment to the student movement was communist in the typical craziness of the Christianity of the 1960s. I owe it to Father Giussani if I rediscovered the Church not as a set of moral rules and emotions but as the stirring presence of the living Jesus Christ. I owe it to him if I discovered that faith deals with what man is and does, with his individual and social needs....
