Archbishop Dew's column: 'Peace of heart is the heart of peace'

Mâori join Aborigines in Alice papal memories
Mâori Catholic voices were added to a gathering in Alice Springs last month
to mark 20 years since Pope John Paul II’s landmark message about the rights
of indigenous peoples in 1986. Danny Karatea-Goddard of Palmerston North
addressed the gathering as part of a five-strong delegation of
representatives from Te Rûnanga o te Hâhi Katorika ki Aotearoa, the New
Zealand Catholic Mâori Council. He said that Mâori people shared much in
common with their Aboriginal and Torres Straits brothers and sisters...

Barbershop leaders ABRAchordABRA
ABRAchordABRA from St Catherine’s College have recently been named one of
New Zealand’s top female secondary school barbershop quartets being placed
second in the national finals in Hamilton. The quartet, consisting of
Ashleigh Twist (tenor), Rowena Yates (lead), Annelise Le Grange (baritone)
and Barbara Aukusitino (bass) have been singing together for about 18 months
and have found a vocal blend that can take years to accomplish. Their road
to success has been a challenging one...

Sacre Coeur sisters leave Wellington
The crypt under St Mary of the Angels is recognising the end of an era this
month with the departure from Wellington of its founding order, the
Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RSCJ). Eighteen months ago Sr Helen
Gilroy handed over to Sister Sarto DOLC and her helpers the running of the
drop-in centre known as The Crypt, founded in 1982 by Sister Monica McGivern
and taken on by Sister Helen in 1993. It has become a valued meeting place
for all sorts of people...

New Vicar for Education
The archdiocese has a new vicar for education. She is Jenny Gordon who has
been working in the education area for the past 30 years and currently
teaches at St Mary’s College. She will represent the archbishop in all
things to do with education in the archdiocese....

Richard Rohr - true self
That our task is the same as that of Jesus and of Mary his mother, to get
our egos out of the way and let God work through us, was the message of
Franciscan priest, Fr Richard Rohr, in Wellington last month. As well as the
300 or so people at the two workshops on the 24 and 25 October, Richard’s
talk on the Tuesday evening was webcast so that groups of people in other
parts of the diocese were also able to watch....

St Vincent de Paul's Wellington connection
The principal co-founder of the St Vincent de Paul Society, Charles Gordon
O’Neill,
is the subject of a biography, Engineer of Charity, due for publication next
year. O’Neill’s links with the society go back to his early years in
Dumbarton, Scotland, where he joined in 1851 and moved quickly through its
ranks becoming president of the Superior Council for the Western District of
Scotland in 1860 and a member of the Society’s Council General in Paris. In
1863 he briefly served as president of the Superior Council of Glasgow
before leaving for Otago, New Zealand....

The Christian church, which tomorrow marks 150 years in Invercargill, wasn't
pioneered by milquetoasts. Paparazzi weren't particularly a presence back in
1857 when the Bishop of Christchurch, the Right Rev J C Harper, his son
Henry and a sheep inspector, William Pinkerton, decided to get their gear
off. Waituna Lagoon had broken through the sea, so the only way forward was
to wade through it if they were to continue their journey to the nascent
Invercargill, established just the year before...

C.K. STEAD ON JUDAS

The first link below is to a TVNZ interview with the prominent New Zealand
author C.K Stead about his new novel 'My name was Judas and I betrayed
Jesus'. The Jesus of the novel is more like Father Christmas than the Christ
of the gospels, but I mention it here because the book will be published
overseas and translated into several languages, so we will probably be
hearing quite a bit about it.

By coincidence, in a public address a few days ago Pope Benedict also spoke
about Judas. There's a link to the full text below.

remedial action is often not possible due to lack of money. Why should this
be so? Money has always been used to represent value of goods and services
and to make trade easier. It is easier to use money than pigs or chickens...

Second lay leader installed
‘Here I Am, Lord’ sang the congregation with a spirit of expectation,
challenge, promise and purpose as the archdiocese’ second lay pastoral
leader, Barbara Rowley, and Archbishop John Dew processed in St Bernadette’s,

The proceedings of the Pentecost Synod 2006 have been finally decreed in

The booklet was launched on 20 September in Wellington and 29 September in
Nelson. Representatives of all the parishes in the archdiocese were at the
two masses to collect their copies...

Schools the face of church for many
For two-thirds of Catholic families in Queensland, the school their children
attend is the only face of the church, according to a Queensland study from
2002. And the executive director of schools for the Parramatta diocese in
New South Wales, Anne Benjamin, told the New Zealand Catholic Education
Convention 2006 ‘Radiating Hope Challenging Our Times’ last month she
understands the situation is similar for Catholic families in New Zealand.
‘Few families of Catholic students in our schools are regular members of a
parish.’...

Relationship education a gap in the curriculum
Critical thinking about God, and relationship teaching were two major gaps
in Catholic school religious modules, identified at the Catholic Education
Convention last month. But at least one RE teacher says this gap may have
been filled at her school in the last couple of years after a survey showed
relationship breakups were the biggest challenge for teenagers. The national
convention, which attracted some 800 participants from throughout the
country, was held at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on 31 August to 2
September...

BBC documentary described as "beat-up" by Catholic Church (full text)
Radio New Zealand Newswire â€" 03 10 2006 : 09:07:54
The Catholic Church says a documentary claiming the Pope Benedict XVI was
involved in covering up child sex abuse by priests, is a beat-up. The BBC
programme looks at a secret document which instructs bishops about how to
deal with allegations against priests, and says the current pope enforced
these rules for 20 years. Communications director for the Catholic Church in
New Zealand, Lyndsay Freer, says she believes it relates to the seal of
confession, where a priest is bound never to divulge what is spoken. Ms
Freer says the producer and programme makers are working to their own
agenda, which is a beat up of the Pope and the Catholic church.

POPE BENEDICT ON ISLAM

Religious lessons of tolerance
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/dominionpost/0,2106,3803662a6483,00.html
Times columnist William Rees-Mogg pointed out in The Dominion Post this
week, Pope Benedict is not the first speaker to liven up a dry text with a
strongly worded quote, The Dominion Post writes in an editorial...

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/search/story.cfm?storyid=0001F367-7B77-1513-B4F883027A\
F1013D

Last year, when the Vatican conclave elected red-blooded Cardinal Ratzinger
to succeed John Paul II, liberals like my mother assumed the Holy Spirit had
taken the day off. That suspicion was confirmed for her this week when
Benedict XVI, as he called himself, had Muslims everywhere in uproar over
words he used about their religion...

Hysterical reaction
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/thepress/0,2106,3802668a6528,00.html
Pope Benedict XVI is no imitator of Pope Urban II, who preached to the flock
at Clermont and set in train the Crusades, writes The Press in an
editorial...

Despite the fact that one-god religions like to preach tolerance,
increasingly that is not what they practise. This week's over-reaction by
some Muslims to Pope Benedict's speech proved that given the slightest
provocation, the mad mullahs will take umbrage, threaten violence, and
demand apologies...

Catholics and Muslims meet after Pope's comments

The Race Relations Commissioner has met New Zealand Catholic and Muslim
leaders following comments about Islam by the Pope, which have sparked

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/search/story.cfm?storyid=0004F75A-501C-150E-8D2F83027A\
F1010F

Pope Benedict is possibly as surprised as anyone that a quotation he used in
the course of a theological lecture last week should be causing such
consternation among Muslims. The Pope was contributing to a discussion on
the rationality of religion, and suggested religion ceased to have a
rational basis when it used violence to advance its sway. He could have
mentioned some of the history of his own church but instead he cited
Islam...

Papal apology not enough, Muslims say
Otago Daily Times
http://tinyurl.com/r2yxp
The local Muslim community is calling for Pope Benedict to make a more
extensive apology after he allegedly portrayed Islam as a religion tainted
with violence...

Theologian defends pope's criticism of islam (full text)
Radio New Zealand Newswire
A New Zealand theologian has defended a speech by Pope Benedict the
Sixteenth which has sparked outrage among muslims. In the speech at his old
university in Regensburg, the Pope referred to a six hundred year old
critique of Islam as evil and inhuman. Father Merv Duffy, a theologian at
the Good Shepherd College in Auckland, says the Pope also makes a case that
while Christianity is a religion of reason, Islam is not. He says the Pope
is speaking the truth as he sees it, and he is known for seeking dialogue
among religions. Father Duffy says subsequent events suggest the speech was
unwise although the violence of reaction to it indicates the Pope was
correct.

Religious Groups At Odds Over Pope's Remarks

Two religious organisations in New Zealand are at odds over a recent speech
by Pope Benedict XVI which has raised the hackles of Muslim leaders around
the world. Religious advisor for the International Muslim Association of New
Zealand Mohammed Amir said the Pope was not creating good perceptions of the
Islamic community, and his remarks had upset Muslims...
