ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis: Right and left join forces to oppose brave new world of
biotechnology
For some time, the politics of bioethics in the West has fueled deep
ideological polarization between a permissive left and a restrictive right.
That was the dynamic when the front-burner issues were abortion and birth
control, and it's still true of today's most agonizing debates, such as
embryonic stem cell research and end-of-life questions such as those
surrounding the Terry Schiavo case in Florida. But what if we project
forward 10 to 20 years, trying to anticipate what the front-line bioethical
debates will be then? Looking at what's happening in the biological
sciences, such questions may include cloning, life-extension treatments, the
creation of transgenic entities such as chimeras, the use of genetic
technology to "engineer" offspring with desirable intellectual and physical
capacities, and the widespread use of genetically modified foods...

'SHIP OF FOOLS' - 'The Mystery Worshipper' in New Zealand

http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/index.html

The UK Christian Website 'Ship of Fools' has a feature in which an anonymous
person visits a Sunday service at a church and afterwards writes a "view
from the pew" report for the Website. On the page of reports about
Australian and New Zealand churches (
http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/archive/oz_nz.html ), the visitors - and
the visited churches - seem mainly to be Anglican, although Christ the King
Church, Owairaka, is up there under '2007'. Really interesting reads. I
especially recommend (on the home page) the account of the visit to the
Czech Basilica of Strahov Monastery ("burnt down by Hussites in 1420, used
for target practice by the French in 1742, briefly shut down by
secularisation reforms in the 18th century, and officially closed until 1989
by the Communists.") ML

Weekly Analysis: Religious opposition to homosexuality increasingly a

A political decision in England this week marks a further step toward what
can only be called the criminalization of religious opposition to
homosexuality, a trend that poses deep challenges to the Catholic church --
not only in terms of legal exposure, but its capacity to articulate a
positive message on sexuality and the family...

Weekly Analysis: Abbe Pierre, French hero, dies at 94
As then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger himself observed in 1984, in the long run
of history, the best argument for Christianity is not its episcopacy but its
artists and its saints. The story of France's famed "Abbot Pierre," a priest
and tireless advocate for the homeless who launched the worldwide Emmaus
movement, and who died this week at 94, offers a vivid example of the
point...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis: How to avoid the steamroller of cultural 'hybridization'
Traditionally, one element in the profile of a contender for the papacy, is
travel. You look for a cardinal who has moved around the world a bit, and
therefore has a sense of the global situation, not just his own particular
corner. Thus we come to Cardinal Angelo Scola of Venice and his visit this
week to the United States, including a session at the United Nations, to
discuss dialogue among Christians, Muslims and Jews...

When Justin Clayton and Jillian Reid take their vows at Flints Bush today,
they will be marking a new chapter in the life of a century-old church. The
former St Marys Immaculate Catholic Church was decommissioned in 1974, fell
into a state of disrepair and took on various guises, including that of a
shearing shed, during the following 30 years...

At the end of carnival week, Reon Murtha, 65, one of the most respected
racing personalities in New Zealand, will retire from a profession he has
followed most of his working life...

Wee Tessla a blessing (photo)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/sundaystartimes/auckland/3925219a6497.html
Abandoned newborn Tessla Schmid was just a few hours old when a stranger
found her on a convent doorstep in China.
Today, Tessla is the much-loved adopted daughter of United States marine
Lieutenant Colonel Steve Schmid and his wife Loise. The three-year-old got
to meet the Kiwi-based branch over the Christmas period when an assortment
of uncles, aunts and cousins gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church
in Glen Eden for her baptism on Boxing Day...

When Mary-Bernadette Te-Vaine Tura Manumea read the letter awarding her a
New Year honour, all she could think about was her tired feet. The devout
Catholic used to pound the pavements in a bid to strengthen ties between the
Cook Island community and her church...

Gargiulo have been made Companions of the Queen's Service Order for public
services, while retired Motueka businessman Peter Goodman has been appointed
a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to business and

Weekly Analysis: In Poland, ‘a feeling of a new beginning’
Following the resignation of Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus of Warsaw last

embarrassing is this for Pope Benedict? As counter-intuitive as it may
seem, this is not generally how things look from Poland...

Christmas messages from some of New Zealand's Christian leaders

Keep Faith, by Bishop Patrick Dunn, Catholic Bishop of Auckland
Several articles have appeared recently in the Herald and elsewhere about
attempts to dumb down Christmas. Not to dumb down the external trimmings but
to obscure, even erase, the "reason for the season"...

Enjoying cultural Christmas (photo)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/timaruherald/3907541a6571.html
Christmas is a time of traditions, especially for a number of different
cultural groups living in South Canterbury. Filipino, Chinese, and Italian
members of the community say they combine both their own and New Zealand
traditions during the festive season...

Bringing new cultures and traditions to New Zealand

The festive season is well and truly upon us, tills are ringing, ribbons are
curling and Southlanders are getting ready to celebrate Christmas in their
own, individual ways...

More Kiwis than ever in church at Christmas (photos)

New Zealand (ANS) â€" Church leaders are surprised at a Reader's Digest survey
which suggests churchgoing is not high on the list of things people like to
do at Christmas, when their experience is exactly the opposite...

Tapu Misa: 'Winterval' yet another example of the war on Christmas
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=301&objectid=10416118
I don't want to cause unnecessary panic and alarm among the nation's
children, but as this has come from the Vatican, I feel duty-bound to pass
it on: Christmas is under attack, and it is high time defenders rallied to
the cause.

[Charlotte Francis, an English immigrant living in Melbourne, vowed to find
a genuine Chrismas carol concert after the "carols" at the outdoor concerts
she went to turned out to be nothing but 'Santa Claus is coming to Town' and
'Jingle Bell Rock'. So she headed for St Patrick's cathedral. "They'll have
the genuine article" she told herself. Well, more or less ...

that removing a cross from the spiritual centre at Middlemore Hospital was

sounds of centuries past, including baroque music and singing. Under Robert
Oliver's direction, the chamber music ensemble Baroque Voices, early music

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis: The 'greening' of institutional Christianity
When Pope Benedict XVI and Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople met
recently, the encounter was spun in a variety of ways: As an effort to
reunite Eastern and Western Christianity; As an attempt to forge a united
Christian front vis-Ã -vis Islam; Eeven as a bid to pool resources to combat
runaway secularism in Europe. What the meeting was not generally seen as --
though it easily could have been -- was an encounter between two outspoken
environmentalists, struggling to stir the conscience of the world about a
mounting ecological crisis...
