Shamus O'Flarehtery is one of many New Zealanders who can claim heritage
from both the Land of the Long White Cloud and that wee emerald isle on the
other side of the world. Shamus, 16, will be one of many Irish-Maori New
Zealanders taking part in a special St Patrick's Day celebrating Maori and
Celtic cultures -- a Hui and Huilli -- on Saturday in Napier.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

Weekly Analysis:
Sobrino's notification: a sign of things to come
I suspect the most common reaction to news this week that the Vatican has
censured Jesuit Fr. Jon Sobrino, a pioneer of liberation theology and a
former advisor to Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, will be, "Why
now?" After all, the titanic battles over liberation theology were fought
during the 1970s and '80s. Should we also expect the Holy See, some may
wryly ask, to condemn eight-track tapes, or "Miami Vice"? ...

When Archbishop John Dew called us together for Synod 2006 and exhorted us
to plan collaboratively, priest and people together, Salt and Light for
their communities, the Church, and the world, it seemed as if all we had to
do was believe it, and it would happen! So where are we on this journey, six
months after the promulgation of the synod document, the blueprint for our
diocese into the future? ...

More pastoral areas on stream
2007 a new year, a new beginning, and for us in the Archdiocese of
Wellington, with the announcement that three pastoral areas will be
operating in the near future, a realisation that it is not Church
organisation as we have known it for the past 50 years. Archbishop John Dew
has announced that the archdiocese’ next pastoral areas will become
operational in Newtown and Island Bay and in the Cathedral, Northland and
Karori parishes in July and Mt Victoria and Brooklyn in January 2008...

Weekly Analysis: Deep forces at work in Catholic-Jewish dialogue
Journalists are forever asserting that something "stands at a crossroads,"
and, truth to be told, often it's just a rhetorical device to lend drama to
whatever follows. Chronic overuse of the image, however, doesn't mean there
are no real crossroads, and today one can make a very good case that
Jewish/Catholic relations are fast arriving at one...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis: Right and left join forces to oppose brave new world of
biotechnology
For some time, the politics of bioethics in the West has fueled deep
ideological polarization between a permissive left and a restrictive right.
That was the dynamic when the front-burner issues were abortion and birth
control, and it's still true of today's most agonizing debates, such as
embryonic stem cell research and end-of-life questions such as those
surrounding the Terry Schiavo case in Florida. But what if we project
forward 10 to 20 years, trying to anticipate what the front-line bioethical
debates will be then? Looking at what's happening in the biological
sciences, such questions may include cloning, life-extension treatments, the
creation of transgenic entities such as chimeras, the use of genetic
technology to "engineer" offspring with desirable intellectual and physical
capacities, and the widespread use of genetically modified foods...

'SHIP OF FOOLS' - 'The Mystery Worshipper' in New Zealand

http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/index.html

The UK Christian Website 'Ship of Fools' has a feature in which an anonymous
person visits a Sunday service at a church and afterwards writes a "view
from the pew" report for the Website. On the page of reports about
Australian and New Zealand churches (
http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/archive/oz_nz.html ), the visitors - and
the visited churches - seem mainly to be Anglican, although Christ the King
Church, Owairaka, is up there under '2007'. Really interesting reads. I
especially recommend (on the home page) the account of the visit to the
Czech Basilica of Strahov Monastery ("burnt down by Hussites in 1420, used
for target practice by the French in 1742, briefly shut down by
secularisation reforms in the 18th century, and officially closed until 1989
by the Communists.") ML

Weekly Analysis: Religious opposition to homosexuality increasingly a

A political decision in England this week marks a further step toward what
can only be called the criminalization of religious opposition to

not only in terms of legal exposure, but its capacity to articulate a
positive message on sexuality and the family...
