Growing numbers of New Zealanders are turning to "born again" and
fundamentalist churches, drawn by the conservative moral codes, slick

kicking back against rapid social change, but some warn the trend represents
a step backward in social gains such as sex equality, sexual liberation and
acceptance of ethnic diversity...

Perhaps the boldest Easter message in the world this year came from the
Catholic bishops of Zimbabwe, who unambiguously told their country's aging
dictator, Robert Mugabe, that he either has to go, or face "open revolt."
The warning came in a pastoral letter posted in Catholic churches across the
country, improbably transforming parish bulletin boards into popular
gathering places...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis:
Sobrino's notification: a sign of things to come
I suspect the most common reaction to news this week that the Vatican has
censured Jesuit Fr. Jon Sobrino, a pioneer of liberation theology and a
former advisor to Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, will be, "Why
now?" After all, the titanic battles over liberation theology were fought
during the 1970s and '80s. Should we also expect the Holy See, some may
wryly ask, to condemn eight-track tapes, or "Miami Vice"? ...

- Papal preacher exalts non-violence, connects Nietzsche to Holocaust

An outpouring of love and grief for a South Korean teenager continued
yesterday in Whangarei. Eighteen-year-old student SangJe Lee died on Monday,
hours after being run over in a hit-and-run incident at Okara shopping

SangJe at a funeral service in Pompallier Catholic College's hall that
although he had lost his only child, he had also gained many sons and

For the victim of crime, a restorative justice conference allows them to sit

Dolan sits at the centre of the conference, walking the line between human
emotion at its most raw and remorse for harm done. The Dunedin-based

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=301&objectid=10427965
The 1960s brought youth rebellion and social change in New Zealand, as
elsewhere - yet the Church remained entwined in this country's political and
business affairs and the education of our young. In the northern half of the
North Island, nearly 180,000 people identified as Catholic, while nearly
20,000 Auckland children attended Catholic schools. Patriarch of the faith
for nearly half a century was James Michael Liston, the Archbishop of
Auckland...

"What hasn't been said to date is that any morally consistent campaign to
eliminate violence against our babies - as Sue Bradford repeatedly calls
them - must begin where the violence is worst. And it must begin at the
beginning. By all means pass a law preventing us from beating our babies.
But only after you've passed a law preventing us from aborting those
babies..."
