A white wedding like no other
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=14&objectid=10439311
The bride in white, the groom in his best bib and tucker and the vicar in
his robes, standing framed by the arched stained-glass windows of the stone
Anglican chapel. So far, so normal. But forget the traditional vision of a
wedding - this is a vastly different story. It is one of sacred vows sold
for commercial gain - the bride and groom are a pizza and a pie, and the
service is a commercial product launch in which the only authentic
ingredient is the venue...

This Newsletter of the Marist Brothers' New Zealand province is distributed
four times year to Marist Communities, lay partners and associates and
others interested in the happenings within the New Zealand Marist family.
In the March 2007 issue ...
1. The newsletter commences with a wonderful vision of hope from Archbishop
Mataca in Fiji followed by this beautiful prayer -
We come before you Lord accompanied by Saint Marcellin Champagnat and
sharing the Marist vision entrusted to us. We know what we are about …
planting seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted in the hearts of the people of our
communities.
We know that we cannot do everything, and we sense being liberated in
accepting that.
We hear your call, Lord, to do something and we do it as well as we can.
We are workers, not master builders, ministers and not messiahs.
We are prophets for a future not our own, not seeing the end results.
We ask that we too, with Saint Marcellin, may have hearts that know no
bounds.
We lift our hearts to you in prayer with Jesus and our Good Mother Mary, in
solidarity with all those in need at this time. Amen.

Benedict's priorities: Feeding humanity's spiritual and material hunger
After the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), no local Catholic church on
earth seized the social thrust of the council's message with more enthusiasm
than Brazil. The largest Catholic country on earth, Brazil also became the
most important laboratory for liberation theology, which proclaimed a
"preferential option for the poor" and thrust the church into struggles for
progressive social change...

Pope's new book addresses key concerns for this pontificate: Christ is key
When people pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV news, they generally
aren't looking for a Sunday school lesson. This creates a challenge for
journalists covering religious leaders, since most of their public
utterances are devoted either to expounding their faith, or urging people to
behave. The way reporters solve the problem is by combing through those
utterances to find statements presumed to have broad, non-sectarian
significance, normally because they apply to matters of politics or
culture...

One of the United States' most senior cardinals says the Catholic Church has
learned its lesson after paying out US$1.7 billion ($2.3 billion) in legal
costs and settlements for sexual abuse by priests and other church
officials. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who arrived in Auckland yesterday to
speak at a eucharistic convention this weekend, said the Church in the US
now had a policy of "zero tolerance" towards any priest found guilty of any
sexual offence against a child...

Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen
Weekly Analysis: Anniversary of a Catholic victory over a dictator
Perhaps the boldest Easter message in the world this year came from the
Catholic bishops of Zimbabwe, who unambiguously told their country's aging
dictator, Robert Mugabe, that he either has to go, or face "open revolt."
The warning came in a pastoral letter posted in Catholic churches across the
country, improbably transforming parish bulletin boards into popular
gathering places...

Weekly Analysis:
Sr Maria Rosa Leggol: 'Nobody gave me this job -- I made it'
Although Roman Catholicism may be a boy's club on top, it's an open secret
that without women at every other level, the church would grind to a halt.
Often these contributions come behind the scenes, but every so often a
particular Catholic woman's vision and accomplishments make her a celebrity.
Such was the case with Mother Teresa, and in the small Central American
nation of Honduras, such is the case with another formidable nun: Franciscan
Sr. Maria Rosa Leggol, founder of the Sociedad Amigos de los Niños...
