The context of Cardinal Stafford’s stark language
I’ve been speaking and writing lately about U.S.-Vatican ties under Obama; I
was at Colgate University earlier this week, for example, addressing
students and faculty on this very subject. As fate would have it, my
appearance coincided with a sharp reminder of the potential pitfalls in that
relationship, in the form of some remarkably incendiary language from
Cardinal Francis Stafford, an American who heads a Vatican court...

NEW ZEALAND CATHOLIC PODCASTS

http://station15.libsyn.com

** Station XV - Episode 16 - Priests and politics **
We promise - this is the last one where we'll be talking about this
election. But with both the N.Z. and U.S. elections complete, we'll talk
about Obama and Key, but also about the plight of Christian parties and MMP,
the persecution of Christians around the world, the flurry of ordinations in
New Zealand in the next couple of months, and we end with a great rendition
of "Panis Angelicus" from the new album by The Priests (www.thepriests.com).

** Catechiwi - Episode 3 **
A couple of hundred bishops spent most of October at the Vatican talking
about the Word of God. In this episode of New Zealand's newest Catholic
podcast, we talk to Auckland-based priest Fr Peter Fitzsimons about
Scripture and its importance in the Church.

** Familia - Episode 3 **
In this special edition of the Familia Podcast we commemorate the 40th
anniversary of Humanae Vitae with part one of a two part interview about
contraception with Dr. Chris Pemberton. Chris holds a Ph.D. in
Endocrinology, and he works as a biomedical researcher for the Christchurch
School of Medicine, and in this interview he discusses the medical facts and
social implications of the advent of the contraceptive pill.

Postmortem of the bishops' meeting; U.S. relations with the Holy See
From the outside, it's tempting to conclude that a hard-line position on
abortion prevailed among the U.S. bishops during their Nov. 10-13 fall
meeting in Baltimore. To be sure, that reaction has a basis in reality. The
bishops were remarkably compact in their determination that there will be no
"truce," as Bishop Daniel Conlon of Steubenville, Ohio, put it, in their
defense of unborn life. The bishops seem especially galvanized in opposition
to the Freedom of Choice Act, or FOCA, which would bar restrictions on
abortion at state and federal levels such as parental notification laws or
limits on partial birth abortion, and which, according to worst-case
readings, could eventually put Catholic hospitals in the position of either
providing abortions or closing their doors...

An open letter to President-elect Barack Obama
For the record, nobody from the Obama transition team has solicited my
advice about relations with the Vatican, and I would frankly be surprised if
the question were yet on their radar screen. Others, however, are already
speculating about how things might shake out; on Wednesday, for example,
Reuters moved a story predicting a "tricky" relationship between Rome and
the Obama White House because of the abortion issue. As a thought exercise,
I decided to pen an open letter to the president-elect about U.S.-Vatican
ties over the next four years...
