Further pressure on Catholic Church (text and video)
http://tvnz.co.nz/world-news/further-pressure-catholic-church-3456353
A letter has surfaced showing the Pope, in a previous role, was reluctant to dismiss a priest who abused children.
[Like this one, all the short reports on this case leave out the fact that the offender had already been suspended indefinitely from priestly duties when laicisation was being discussed, giving readers who don't know the difference between suspension and laicisation (and who couldn't care less) the impression that Cardinal Ratzinger failed to restrain him. Damien Thompson's blog in The Telegraph - http://tinyurl.com/ydxmw8b - gives the full background on the case. This TVNZ report includes a comment by Bishop Browne deploring abuse, inserted in such a way that the reader might think the bishop was commenting on the headline report, which he wasn't. Also, apparently, we (the New Zealand Church) are in crisis. You heard it on TV first! - ML]

The Catholic Bishop of Auckland says continuing criticism of the Church, over child sex abuse, has not affected the number of people attending Easter masses. There have been calls for Pope Benedict to resign, amid allegations he was involved in covering up abuse by Catholic priests. Yesterday / on Saturday Jewish groups and some victims of abuse condemned the Pope's personal preacher for comparing criticism of the Pontiff to anti-Semitism. The Bishop of Auckland, Patrick Dunn, says people are still attending Church for Easter celebrations. He says most Catholics know that the Pope is a person of integrity and doubt he would be assisting sexual offenders.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/middle-ground-possible-pope
More and more, I'm wondering if Karl Rove was right. Rove, of course, famously argued that the "independent voter" is a myth. Whatever they may tell pollsters, most Americans in their heart of hearts are clearly aligned with one side or the other, so the trick to winning elections is to turn outmore of your base than the other side does of theirs. "Rove's Law" is about politics, but I'm beginning to suspect it has some traction in Catholic affairs as well...

Is middle ground possible on the Pope?
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/middle-ground-possible-pope
More and more, I'm wondering if Karl Rove was right. Rove, of course, famously argued that the "independent voter" is a myth. Whatever they may tell pollsters, most Americans in their heart of hearts are clearly aligned with one side or the other, so the trick to winning elections is to turn outmore of your base than the other side does of theirs. "Rove's Law" is about politics, but I'm beginning to suspect it has some traction in Catholic affairs as well...

Keeping the record straight on Benedict and the crisis
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/keeping-record-straight-benedict-and-crisis
Intense scrutiny is being devoted these days to Pope Benedict XVI's history on the sex abuse crisis. Revelations from Germany have put his five years as a diocesan bishop under a spotlight, and a piece on Thursday in The New York Times, on the case of Fr. Lawrence Murphy of Milwaukee, also called into question his Vatican years as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Yet as always, the first casualty of any crisis is perspective. There are at least three aspects of Benedict's record on the sexual abuse crisis which are being misconstrued, or at least sloppily characterized, in today's discussion. Bringing clarity to these points is not a matter of excusing the pope, but rather of trying to understand accurately how we got where we are...

The desire to give children the opportunities he did not have has motivated a prisoner serving a life sentence to donate a sculpture for auction by the Nano Nagle Charitable Trust. "I want to help any way I can to stop any person growing up like I have. I want to stop kids taking the same paths that I did," he said. The sculpture, titled New Beginnings - New Life, is made of paua and bone and represents the beginning of life from infancy to adulthood. The sculpture is to be auctioned online and all proceeds will go to the trust, which was formed by the Presentation Sisters and associates to help children unable to receive a Catholic education because of financial hardship. The auction will run for a week from Monday. For further information contact: Sr Noreen McGrath on (03) 417-4003.

Cardinal Sean Brady of Ireland, currently under fire for his role in an investigation of sex abuse claims against a priest in the 1970s, delivered a homily on St. Patrick's Day calling for a "sincere, wholehearted and truthful acknowledgement of our sinfulness," insisting that the Irish bishops must "own up to, and take responsibility for, any mismanagement or cover-up of child abuse." "We have to stop the drip, drip, drip of revelations of failure," Brady said. That's excellent advice, and especially pertinent at the moment for church officials in Munich.

The Catholic Church in New Zealand believes there's nothing to suggest priests in this country have been involved in sexual abuse during the past 20 years. Germany's justice minister yesterday criticised the Vatican for what she called a wall of silence over abuse allegations that emerged recently. Claims of sexual abuse are being investigated in 18 of Germany's 27 Catholic dioceses. The national director for professional standards for the Catholic Church in New Zealand, John Jamieson, says he has received some complaints from more than 20 years ago. But he says because they're historical, accused offenders are often dead by the time an investigation takes place.

Missionary letters reveal gritty lives

New insights into New Zealand's history have come to light from a project to transcribe and translate thousands of letters written by French missionaries in the 1800s. The letters, from between 1836 and 1854, were transcribed on to computer files in the past 12 years to preserve them by United States' Catholic priest Charles Girard. They are now being translated into English through an internet project.

LENT 2010
Caritas Aotearoa NZ - http://www.caritas.org.nz
Lent: "Working together in true communion".
"The development of peoples depends, above all, on a recognition that the human race is a single family working together in true communion, not simply a group of subjects who happen to live side by side." - Pope Benedict XVI: 'Caritas in Veritate', 2009.
As we begin Lent, the reflection above reminds us of our common humanity and calling - and provides the inspiration for our Lenten theme "working together in true communion". The Lent Appeal is Caritas' main appeal of the year. Resources have been sent to schools and parishes.
Our schools' resource features the popular Lent Lifestyle Calendar and a songwriting competition. Our popular Reflection Programme is available in English, Samoan and Tongan. There is also additional scripture reflection and a Way of the Cross meditation. Find out more at http://www.caritas.org.nz

Focus On St Thomas More Catholic School
Bay of Plenty Times - A005 - 22 February 2010
If you're a new face at St Thomas More Catholic School, don't expect to go unnoticed. As doors swing open and students faces turn _ you're in the spotlight. Small hands flutter up in unison, and wiggling fingers, follow a Mexican wave of ``hellos''. It's this kind of welcome that founding principal Kathleen Joblin would expect of her students...

Foreign priests and the risk of plunder
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/foreign-priests-and-risk-plunder
When their longtime pastor recently retired, the Catholics of Hill City feared they would become yet another circuit-rider parish. Instead, the Diocese of Salina was able to assign a Fidei Donum priest from Burma (Myanmar). Fr.
