A Vatican literacy quiz
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/vatican-literacy-quiz
In recent weeks, the air has been filled with competing opinions on various Vatican matters: Whether or not it was appropriate for the Vatican to treat the sexual abuse of minors and the attempted ordination of women in the same legal document, for example. People who've done their homework can reach very different conclusions on such subjects, and informed perspectives are always worth hearing. What's tougher to take, however, are polemics from commentators who obviously don't know a motu proprio from a miter, or a dicastery from a deacon.
Herewith, therefore, my summer contribution to the ecclesiastical version of barroom arguments: A ten-point Vatican literacy test, designed to establish someone's bona fides. These questions test entry-level material, the kind of stuff that people paying attention would know, as opposed to being arcane points that only real devotees could summon...

http://ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/benedict-struggles-squelch-blame-game-among-bishops
In my "All Things Catholic" column on Friday, I offered a rundown of stories over the last week which shook the Vatican. One item I left off that list, but which deserves to be recorded, was Pope Benedict XVI's July 1 meeting with German Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg, whose resignation was accepted on May 8. Senior Vatican sources told me this week that the statement issued after the meeting was almost unique in that, even though it was released by the Vatican Press Office, it was more or less directly written by the pope himself. In effect, the Mixa affair offers a glimpse of Benedict struggling to keep his bishops on the same page in a time of crisis, rather than playing the blame game by pointing fingers at one another...

Burglars stoop to new low at church
Northern Advocate - A001 - 26 June 2010
Thieves have stooped to a new low by breaking into a church and stealing sacred vessels. Now the parishioners of Kerikeri's Catholic church are appealing for the return of the stolen property, saying it is worth little in monetary terms but has huge sentimental and religious value.

A global case for good government in the church
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/global-case-good-government-church
Especially in the wake of the sexual abuse crisis, many Catholics in Europe and the States have come to see the push for good government in the church, featuring greater accountability and transparency, in roughly the same way that Catholics in the late 1960s saw aggiornamento -- something obviously to be desired, even if no two people define it quite the same way. In a speech in Philadelphia on Thursday for the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management, I suggested that a quick look around the Catholic map suggests the global case for good church governance is actually quite strong. I laid the argument out in a premise, two observations, and a thesis, which I'll summarize here...

Struggling to understand a bishop's murder in Turkey
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/struggling-understand-bishops-murder-turkey
Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Catholicism in the Middle East probably knew Bishop Luigi Padovese, an Italian Capuchin who served as the Vicar of Anatolia and president of the bishops' conference in Turkey. Gregarious and articulate, Padovese was a passionate advocate of the church's mission in the region. In terms of the Christian/Muslim relationship, Padovese was also one of those rare voices not easily classified as either a hawk or a dove - hardly blind to the threats posed by Islamic radicalism, but still a man of dialogue through and through. Given that reputation, news last week that Padovese, 63, had been murdered by his longtime driver and aide in his summer residence outside Iskenderun, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, triggered shock waves across the Catholic world...
