Ferment in religious life, a new American leader, and 'Vatican Insider'
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/ferment-religious-life-new-american-leader-and-vatican-insider

Absolutely no zone of church life these days is immune to hard questions about Catholic identity, reflecting the mega-trend I’ve dubbed “Evangelical Catholicism,” premised on a robust assertion of traditional Catholic thought, speech and practice. This politics of identity is the scarlet thread that runs through a wide range of upheavals, from the Latin Mass to the new Roman Missal, from debates over the ecclesial character of Catholic hospitals and charities to theology and seminary formation. The ferment is certainly clear in religious life. It’s the basis, for instance, of a Vatican-sponsored Apostolic Visitation of women’s communities in the United States. It’s also why top officials of the Roman Curia this week devoted one of their rare joint meetings to a discussion of religious life, focusing mostly on matters of authority...

A two-part radio documentary on Protestant-Catholic sectarianism and mixed marriages in Australia in the early-to-mid twentieth century. The "systemic discrimination" of the era against working class Catholics in Australia had echoes in New Zealand in the early twentieth century but wasn't on anywhere near the scale reported in the documentary, maybe because, as a small minority, we Kiwi Catholics were perceived as odd, but not threatening. But the strong disapproval of mixed marriages, both by the Church and within the families concerned, was exactly paralleled in the two countries - ML

Top Ten Papal Trips

If you blinked last weekend you might have missed it, but Pope Benedict XVI visited Croatia on Saturday and Sunday, marking the 19th foreign journey of his pontificate. As papal travel goes, it wasn't really the stuff of high drama.
This fairly routine excursion got me thinking: Of all the papal journeys we've seen over the years, which ones were truly memorable? ...

Abortion ruling a step backwards, say New Zealand Catholic Bishops (2 June 2011) (full text)

The New Zealand Catholic bishops are very disappointed at the Court of Appeal decision which upheld a High Court ruling that unborn children do not have a right to life. The decision comes about after pro life group Right to Life appealed a 2008 ruling by Justice Miller that the right to life does not extend to foetuses. Spokesperson for the Catholic bishops, Fr Michael McCabe, says it is a very sad day for the unborn children in our community. “The right to life is fundamental and is the foundation of any just and moral society,” said Fr McCabe. “Every year more than 17,000 young New Zealanders die because we do not accord them this right.” “People on both sides of the abortion debate agree that there is an urgent need to reduce the number of abortions. This latest legal decision is a step backwards in finding common ground for the good of the unborn and their parents”.

A funny thing has happened as the story of a recent Vatican crackdown on a legendary monastery in Rome has made its way into the English-language press. Dear readers,

I recommend this excellent article in 'Envoy' magazine - http://tinyurl.com/44qfsbu - for clarification about the concept of 'The Rapture' which is propagated in fundamentalist Christian circles. In particular, it's important to know - and many people may not be aware of this - that when people talk about 'the Rapture', they are not referring to the Second Coming of Christ, a doctrine shared by all the principal Christian denominations, but to something else entirely - Mike L.

Political and social commitment needed to change abortion situation (20 May 2011)

The New Zealand Catholic Bishops say that the recent example of a 16 year old girl having an abortion without the knowledge or consent of her parents is a disturbing example of the law letting down our young people and undermining family values...

On a Saturday afternoon in July 1981 as Father Terry Dibble stood in the middle of Rugby Park, Hamilton, more than a few were paraphrasing King Henry II. ‘‘Will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest,’’ Henry said of Thomas a Becket, and people wanting to watch a Springbok game that day would have applauded the sentiment.

New Zealand Catholic Church says it will not have to change its policies (full text)
Radio New Zealand Newswire — 17 May 2011 : 14:07:33
The Catholic Church in New Zealand says it will not have to change its policies following a letter from the Vatican telling bishops around the world to report abuse by clergy to the police. The letter says bishops should report the abuse of children by priests directly to the authorities in line with their local law. The New Zealand church's director for Professional Standards, John Jamieson, says the letter deals with offending against people aged under 18, who make a complaint within 20 years. He says the church would take that sort of case to the police immediately, but in the last 30 years it has only had reports of historical abuse. Mr Jamieson says he has dealt with many cases where the offender has died. He says he personally revised the guidelines for the church in New Zealand, so if a current case was reported, it would be handled well.

Doomsday hour arrives: world survives
http://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/161521/doomsday-hour-arrives-world-survives
The prediction of an American religious leader who declared Judgement Day would arrive first in New Zealand at 6pm today has been proved less than accurate. Evangelical broadcaster Harold Camping has predicted a massive earthquake will strike the earth, unleashing the Apocalypse, first upon New Zealand, then around the world.

And that's the end of the world news :-)

Four titles from a bumper crop of Italian books
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/four-titles-bumper-crop-italian-books

On a per capita basis, Italy probably churns out more books on the Catholic church each year than anyplace else on earth. Given the boost created by the May 1 beatification of Pope John Paul II, this spring has been an especially busy period for the Italian market, generating several titles that will likely make their way into translations and shape Catholic conversation around the world. This week, I’ll offer brief sketches of four such titles to emerge from the recent bumper crop...
