Hibernian Credit Union depositors face losing up to half of their
investments after alleged employee fraud, as the Catholic organisation
attempts to merge with a larger benefit society to stave off
liquidation. On Saturday, the credit union and the Hibernian Catholic
Benefit Society held annual meetings at which they voted for a plan to
merge. Depositors were also told that they faced losing 40 per cent to
50 per cent of their deposits.

15 Minutes with the Bishop (July 25, 2011)

July 26 is the Feast of Sts Joachim and Anne, the couple traditionally
understood to be the parents of the Virgin Mary. In this week's
episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop, Bishop Patrick Dunn and Gavin
start with a brief discussion on these two saints of the Church, but
quickly move on to the Catholic understanding of the family, including
the role of parents as providers and as educators for their children.

Young Catholics about to leave for World Youth Day (full text)
http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/80740/young-catholics-about-to-leave-for-world-youth-day
A mass is being held for young Catholics in Christchurch who had to
overcome a number of obstacles following the February earthquake to
participate in the World Youth Day in Spain. The mass is being held on
Saturday night for 70 pilgrims at St Gregory's Church, who will be
part of a New Zealand contingent of 200. An expected 2 million young
Catholics are heading to Madrid to join the Pope for World Youth Day.
Sister Helen O'Sullivan says the young people have been determined to
take part in the event despite of all the difficulties they faced. She
says it's phenomenal that they have struggled on and raised the money
needed.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Preventing a 'spiritual Disneyland' in the Holy Land
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/preventing-spiritual-disneyland-holy-land

By now, the threat facing Christianity in its birthplace has become
depressingly clear. Christians represented 30 percent of British
Mandate Palestine in 1948, while today their share in Israel and the
Palestinian Territories is estimated at 1.25 percent. The risk, as the
Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, has put it, is that the
Holy Land is becoming a "spiritual Disneyland" -- full of glittering
rides and attractions, but empty of its indigenous Christian
population. This decline in the Holy Land is part of a broad Christian
exodus all across the Middle East. The reasons are also well known,
and fairly obvious ...

Last month, some parishes in Australia started to introduce the new English translation of the Mass. New Zealand was several months ahead, introducing the people’s parts of the new translation last November. Bishop Patrick Dunn talks about the implementation of the new translation, how it’s been received and when we should expect to hear some of the other parts of the translation. He also talks with Gavin about the decision to return to the use of the “old” Our Father for Masses in New Zealand.

The copper has been removed and the main dome of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes Street will be split into four before it too is removed, as a result of damage in the recent earthquakes. The Cathedral cathedral was severely damaged in the quakes and until the big aftershocks on June 13, it was hoped the dome could be recovered intact and used as part of a rebuild. This has since been abandoned and the cathedral is coming down anyway. Shipping containers have been used to protect passing motorists in Barbadoes Street.

There’s much to be learned from detective stories, including that the solution to any mystery usually lies in finding the right question to ask. At the moment, a gripping Vatican mystery centers on the Congregation for Religious, and here’s a nominee for the right question: Is Ronald Reagan or Sigmund Freud the better template for Benedict XVI’s management style?

Wednesday may have been the peak moment of the liturgical calendar this week, as the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, but Tuesday, June 28, 2011, marked a crescendo of a different sort: The day when the informal sweepstakes leading up to the next conclave officially began. To be clear, no health scare flared up around Pope Benedict XVI, and there’s no other reason to believe his papacy is nearing an end. Yet on Tuesday, the pontiff made a personnel move that’s not only important in its own right, but one with obvious implications for handicapping papal prospects...

Quite a commotion has resulted from Wellington’s St Patrick’s College refusing the request of one of its students to bring a same-sex partner to the school ball. The word homophobic has been thrown about. Human rights law has been invoked. It’s important to remember religion is a human right too...

** 15 Minutes With The Bishop (17 June 2011)

The post-Pentecost season — and even during Eastertide — seems to be the time for parishes to welcome bishops into their midst for Confirmation Masses. In this week’s episode, Bishop Patrick Dunn talks with Gavin about the sacrament of Confirmation. What does it signify? How do we decide the right age for Confirmation? Is there basis for Confirmation in Scripture? Those questions and more are answered in 15 Minutes with the Bishop.?

** Station XV – Episode 45: Benedict in Croatia and at the breakfast table (June 15, 2011)

In this month’s episode, Pope Benedict is making his presence felt to the ends of the earth — and beyond. We discuss his visit to Croatia, his conversation with astronauts and him being featured on American breakfast TV. We also look at how a priest shortage might impact schools and a billboard controversy in Australia. A busy show!!

** Ignition: Talk 3, Part 5 (June 14, 2011)

There was so much value in what Bishop Anthony Fisher had to say during the question-and-answer session following the 2007 NZ Catholic Lecture that we’re continuing with more in this week’s episode of Ignition. The lecture was entitled “Catholic Conscience in the 21st Century”.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/ferment-religious-life-new-american-leader-and-vatican-insider

Absolutely no zone of church life these days is immune to hard questions about Catholic identity, reflecting the mega-trend I’ve dubbed “Evangelical Catholicism,” premised on a robust assertion of traditional Catholic thought, speech and practice. This politics of identity is the scarlet thread that runs through a wide range of upheavals, from the Latin Mass to the new Roman Missal, from debates over the ecclesial character of Catholic hospitals and charities to theology and seminary formation. The ferment is certainly clear in religious life. It’s the basis, for instance, of a Vatican-sponsored Apostolic Visitation of women’s communities in the United States. It’s also why top officials of the Roman Curia this week devoted one of their rare joint meetings to a discussion of religious life, focusing mostly on matters of authority...
