NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

http://www.catholic.org.nz/news/fx-list-articles.cfm?ctype=MRART&loadref=50

Respect Life Sunday to focus on dying well (5 Oct 2011)

Catholics around New Zealand will be invited to reflect on the idea
that "the art of living well and the art of dying well are one", this
Sunday 9 October. The Day of Prayer to Respect Life is an annual
Catholic Church event and this year's theme centres on respecting and
protecting human life by the way we care for the dying. It also
encourages us to consider what it means to die well...

Three things we learned from Benedict's Germany trip
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/three-things-we-learned-benedicts-germany-trip

Last Sunday Pope Benedict XVI wrapped up a four-day trip to Germany,
which, depending upon whose word you take, either generated
"widespread acclaim" (Italian commentator Sandro Magister) or a
national yawn (the Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung's headline was,
"He came, he spoke, he disappointed.") Despite the generally familiar
flavor of the trip, there were a few nuggets along the way with
something to say about Benedict's papacy and the direction of the
church on his watch. Herewith, then, three things we learned from the
pope's trip ...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

A blessing for the Vatican in (really) deep disguise
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/blessing-vatican-really-deep-disguise

Pope Benedict XVI is in Germany at the moment, where last year's sex
abuse scandals brought his own record squarely into focus. That debate
has flared up anew with a splashy public appeal by a New York based
legal foundation, along with the Survivors Network of those Abused by
Priests, to the International Criminal Court to prosecute the pope and
other senior Vatican officials. Granted, most experts say the Vatican
probably has a point in calling the idea a "publicity stunt." That
said, I want to float a counter-intuitive hypothesis: In the unlikely
event the ICC were to take the case, it might do the Vatican more good
than harm. Here's why...

Station XV: Episode 48 — Name and shame, wine and dine (September 16, 2011)

In this week's episode of The 15th Station, the panel spans the Tasman
Sea — and so do the stories up for discussion. In Australia, a senator
has used parliamentary privilege to name a priest accused of rape 50
years ago. In New Zealand, Rugby World Cup fever seems to have carried
over into the Church. We also talk about eating with the Pope, and
changing the way we record the date. All in our inaugural
international episode.

15 Minutes with the Bishop: Hell (September 12, 2011)

Is it a place of fire and brimstone, or wailing and gnashing of teeth?
Is it a place that is simply an absence of God? Whatever the reality,
the Catholic Church continues to hold to the idea of a place called
Hell. What is the Church's understanding of Hell? Has it changed over
the years? How does a loving God allow people to end up in Hell?
Bishop Patrick talks with Gavin about those questions in the latest
episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

'Ecumenism of the Martyrs', and remembering Giancarlo Zizola
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/ecumenism-martyrs-and-remembering-giancarlo-zizola

Ecumenism, meaning the push for Christian unity, today stands at a
crossroads. On the one hand, it's among the towering religious success
stories of the last century, wiping away old prejudices and building
new friendships in the historical blink of an eye. Yet ecumenists are
right when they say the movement's goal of full, structural unity
seems further away than ever. Resentments over Roman primacy still
block détente with the Orthodox; massive ecclesiological differences
still separate Catholics from most Evangelicals and Pentecostals; and
disputes over both sexual morality and female clergy have added new
complications to already frayed relations between Catholics and
mainline Protestants. Facing this "ecumenical winter," what do you do?

SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK 2011
Social Justice Week promotes action and reflection on social issues of the day in light of the Gospel and Catholic social teaching. It occurs each year in mid-September.
Social Justice Week 2011 (11-18 September) focuses on fair play and the common good. It uses the sporting metaphor 'on a level playing field' as a vision for a fair society.
The core resource booklet 'On a level playing field: fair play and the common good' examines inequality, fairness and the common good in New Zealand society – in the light of Catholic social teaching. Additional resources have been prepared for parishes and schools.
New Zealand Catholic bishops initiated Social Justice Week in 1997, with Caritas responsible for promoting it to the Catholic community and beyond.
The core resource each year is the Social Justice Series booklet, which began with 'A Fresh Start: The Eradication of Poverty' in 1997. Booklets in the series are available from the Caritas office, or downloadable from the Social Justice Week website (at the link above)
Catholic parishes and groups are organising special Social Justice Week events. Details are also available on the Caritas site.

'Pep talk' from Archbishop kick-offs Social Justice Week (photo)
Archbishop of Wellington John Dew launched Caritas' Social Justice Week 2011 (11-18 September) on Wednesday with a pep talk to Catholic secondary students in a Wellington school gymnasium. Archbishop Dew addressed the group of 20 students from St Patrick's and St Catherine's Colleges, Kilbirnie on the Social Justice Week theme 'On a level playing field: fair play and the common good.'
'The Diary'
The Dominion Post
The Catholic Church is using the Rugby World Cup to spread its message of equality for all men. Positive values on the sporting field – fairness, an equal chance of success, unbiased refereeing – are equally important in society, says Catholic Archbishop John Dew in ''kicking off'' the church's annual Social Justice Week.
Fair play makes Japan a World Cup winner
Japan would win the Rugby World Cup if the trophy were awarded on the basis of fairness, says the Catholic Church's social justice arm, Caritas. The agency launches a slightly tongue-in-cheek World Cup blog today on its website socialjusticeweek.org.nz drawing attention to the theme of the church's annual Social Justice Week which kicks off on Sunday, "On a level playing field".

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr
The Policy Myth versus 'Accountability with Teeth'
Mythology is not only loads of fun, but often highly profitable. For proof, look no further than this: Dan Brown has written a book about the Vatican, which was pure fantasy; I've also written a book about the Vatican, which, if I do say so myself, has a fairly decent grasp of the basic realities. Care to guess which one sold better? Yet mythology is also dangerous, never more so than when it fosters misleading diagnoses of serious problems. We've seen two good examples recently vis-à-vis the Vatican, both involving the sexual abuse crisis...

15 Minutes with the Bishop: Augustine and Monica (August 27, 2011)

Over the next two days, the Catholic Church honours a couple of great
figures in Christian history: St Augustine and his mother, St Monica.
St Augustine is often seen as a bit of a prodigal son — someone who
strayed but then returned to the Faith. As Bishop Patrick points out
in this week's episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop, how far
Augustine strayed might be at question, but his mark on the early
Church is not in dispute. Neither is the faith of his mother, who
prayed constantly for her son's conversion back to the religion she
tried to pass on to him.

A German pope heads for the Land of Luther
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/german-pope-heads-land-luther

Benedict XVI may be as Catholic as they come, but he's also deeply
German, and he obviously feels a streak of affection for his country's
most celebrated theological son. Part of the drama of his trip to
Germany, therefore, is how Benedict may use it to recalibrate
relations with Protestantism heading into the 500th anniversary of the
Reformation in 2017.

NEW ZEALAND CATHOLIC PODCASTS

** 15 Minutes with the Bishop: Augustine and Monica (August 27, 2011)

Over the next two days, the Catholic Church honours a couple of great
figures in Christian history: St Augustine and his mother, St Monica.
St Augustine is often seen as a bit of a prodigal son — someone who
strayed but then returned to the Faith. As Bishop Patrick points out
in this week's episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop, how far
Augustine strayed might be at question, but his mark on the early
Church is not in dispute. Neither is the faith of his mother, who
prayed constantly for her son's conversion back to the religion she
tried to pass on to him.

** 15 Minutes with the Bishop: Holy Days (August 25, 2011)

Last week, Catholics in New Zealand celebrated the Feast of the
Assumption, and last week's episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop was
on that topic. This week, Bishop Patrick talks about holy days of
obligation, of which the Assumption is one in New Zealand and in some
other countries around the world. How has the number of holy days
changed? Is Sunday a holy day of obligation? And what about the idea
in the UK of re-instating holy days of obligation?

O'Malley puts down a new marker on abuse crisis
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/omalley-puts-down-new-marker-abuse-crisis

If one were to poll Catholic insiders as to which bishops are
considered global leaders on the sexual abuse crisis, a few names
would likely pop up repeatedly: Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Ireland,
for instance, or Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Germany. Martin's
searing candor has made him a hero to some and a lightning rod for
others, while the German bishops are considered to have mounted one of
the most effective responses to the scandals of any national
conference, and Zollitsch is their chairman. Right at the top of the
list, however, would be Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston...
