Basilica marks its centenary

Timaru's Sacred Heart Basilica will celebrate its centenary this
weekend with hundreds attending including out-of-town visitors.

A new book, 'The French Place in the Bay of Islands', was launched at
the Pompallier Mission in Russell. The book was introduced by French
ambassador Francis Etienne who spoke to dignitaries from around the
country about relations between France and New Zealand, historically
and today.

Poverty's grim reality (photo)
http://tinyurl.com/3gjc39y
Poverty to most Kiwis is starving children in Africa or families
living on a rubbish dump in Asia. But in New Zealand poverty has a
different definition. It doesn't mean literally starving. It means
feeding the kids a loaf of white bread and chips for dinner, because
it's cheap...

Pensioner feels sting of trusted worker's thefts
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/5873864/Pensioner-feels-sting-of-trusted-workers-thefts
Susan Hagai was stealing $600 a day for almost seven years. In total,
she fleeced $1.2 million from the Hibernian Credit Union. But for
Alola Frederickson, a Lower Hutt widow who lives on a pension, her
loss was devastating. The amount, $600, was half of her life
savings...

Green Party calls for end to royal 'religious discrimination'
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10762078
The next royal ruler after Queen Elizabeth II can not be Catholic,
something the NZ Green Party says is pure discrimination.
[The Commonwealth heads of government have agreed that in future a
member of the Royal Family will not lose their right of succession to
the throne just for marrying a Catholic. They will still do so if they
*become* a Catholic, since the monarch is the head of the Church of
England and so must be a member of that Church. The succession of a
Catholic to the throne, as the Green Party proposes, would detach the
monarch from the Church of England, which is the ultimate goal of
secularists such as Keith Locke - ML]

Petre's masterpiece (photos)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/lifestyle/your-christchurch/5833589/Petres-masterpiece
It is a famous story. When George Bernard Shaw was visiting
Christchurch in 1934 he remarked on the beauty of the Cathedral of the
Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes St. Naturally, his hosts in this
Anglican city thought he meant the Anglican cathedral in the Square.
"No," said Shaw, "the one down by the gasworks." If it is true, the
playwright was being unusually mundane. After all, this was the man
who said, "I'm an atheist and I thank God for it."

Station XV: Episode 49 — Pope goes home, St Steve Jobs? (24 October 2011)

In this month's episode of The 15th Station, our trans-Tasman panel
talks about Pope Benedict's recent trip to his homeland, the
uncertainty over Christchurch's Catholic cathedral and the hype
surrounding the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. We also touch on
two very different stories: A priest in Ireland returning to ministry
after being falsely accused of rape and an Anglican church in
Wellington portraying Jesus as an rugby-ball-toting All Black. All in
a month's work.

A papal contender grabs the spotlight
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/papal-contender-grabs-spotlight

Rome saw a striking coincidence this week, which could be either
simple luck or a sign of things to come. There were two big-ticket
Vatican news flashes, Monday's note on reform of the international
economy and Thursday's summit of religious leaders in Assisi. In both
cases, the same Vatican official was a prime mover: Cardinal Peter
Turkson of Ghana, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and
Peace.

Secularism, a new papal contender and Catholic humor
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/secularism-new-papal-contender-and-catholic-humor

Two-thirds of the world's Catholic population today is in the southern
hemisphere, a share that should reach three-quarters by mid-century.
To discern where the church is headed, it's critical to keep an eye on
what's bubbling down south, and two recent stories thus deserve to be
on the global Catholic radar screen...

'Black Sunday' for Christians in Egypt

Somewhere down the line, historians may point to Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011,
as the date when the Arab Spring began to give way to a deadly winter,
especially for the Christians of the Middle East. On that date in a
Cairo suburb, at least 25 people were killed and hundreds injured when
bands of thugs and the Egyptian army attacked demonstrators, mainly
Coptic Christians, protesting the burning of a Christian church in
September...

that "the art of living well and the art of dying well are one", this
Sunday 9 October. The Day of Prayer to Respect Life is an annual
Catholic Church event and this year's theme centres on respecting and
protecting human life by the way we care for the dying. It also
encourages us to consider what it means to die well...

Three things we learned from Benedict's Germany trip
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/three-things-we-learned-benedicts-germany-trip

Last Sunday Pope Benedict XVI wrapped up a four-day trip to Germany,
which, depending upon whose word you take, either generated
"widespread acclaim" (Italian commentator Sandro Magister) or a
national yawn (the Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung's headline was,
"He came, he spoke, he disappointed.") Despite the generally familiar
flavor of the trip, there were a few nuggets along the way with
something to say about Benedict's papacy and the direction of the
church on his watch. Herewith, then, three things we learned from the
pope's trip ...

A blessing for the Vatican in (really) deep disguise
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/blessing-vatican-really-deep-disguise

Pope Benedict XVI is in Germany at the moment, where last year's sex
abuse scandals brought his own record squarely into focus. That debate
has flared up anew with a splashy public appeal by a New York based
legal foundation, along with the Survivors Network of those Abused by
Priests, to the International Criminal Court to prosecute the pope and
other senior Vatican officials. Granted, most experts say the Vatican
probably has a point in calling the idea a "publicity stunt." That

event the ICC were to take the case, it might do the Vatican more good
than harm. Here's why...

Station XV: Episode 48 — Name and shame, wine and dine (September 16, 2011)

In this week's episode of The 15th Station, the panel spans the Tasman
Sea — and so do the stories up for discussion. In Australia, a senator
has used parliamentary privilege to name a priest accused of rape 50
years ago. In New Zealand, Rugby World Cup fever seems to have carried
over into the Church. We also talk about eating with the Pope, and
changing the way we record the date. All in our inaugural
international episode.

15 Minutes with the Bishop: Hell (September 12, 2011)

Is it a place of fire and brimstone, or wailing and gnashing of teeth?
Is it a place that is simply an absence of God? Whatever the reality,
the Catholic Church continues to hold to the idea of a place called
Hell. What is the Church's understanding of Hell? Has it changed over
the years? How does a loving God allow people to end up in Hell?
Bishop Patrick talks with Gavin about those questions in the latest
episode of 15 Minutes with the Bishop.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

'Ecumenism of the Martyrs', and remembering Giancarlo Zizola
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/ecumenism-martyrs-and-remembering-giancarlo-zizola

Ecumenism, meaning the push for Christian unity, today stands at a
crossroads. On the one hand, it's among the towering religious success
stories of the last century, wiping away old prejudices and building
new friendships in the historical blink of an eye. Yet ecumenists are
right when they say the movement's goal of full, structural unity
seems further away than ever. Resentments over Roman primacy still
block détente with the Orthodox; massive ecclesiological differences
still separate Catholics from most Evangelicals and Pentecostals; and
disputes over both sexual morality and female clergy have added new
complications to already frayed relations between Catholics and
mainline Protestants. Facing this "ecumenical winter," what do you do?
