Sister's calendar offers beauty, meditation (photo)
http://ncronline.org/blogs/eco-catholic/sisters-calendar-offers-beauty-meditation
It began as a hand-drawn Christmas calendar for her brother in the
1970s. The following year, his friends asked if she'd make one for
them, too. They loved the meditations from saints, poets and writers
that went with each of the original 12 pieces piece of artwork. They
loved the suggested daily actions to do each day to better the world.
That's how Ministry of the Arts was born.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

A new symbol of false sex abuse allegations
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/new-symbol-false-sex-abuse-allegations

Next month will mark the 10-year anniversary of the explosion of the
sexual abuse crisis, triggered by a January 2002 article in the Boston
Globe on Fr. John Geoghan, accused of abusing more than 130 children
over a 30-year career. A decade into the arc of the crisis, we now
have a new symbol of another of its distressing features: The way all
Catholic priests have been tarred with the same brush, presumed guilty
until proven innocent and often cut loose by officialdom at the first
hint of an allegation. That symbol is Fr. Kevin Reynolds of Ireland,
and his is a story that merits serious reflection...

My first thought when I saw Josie Olsen carrying a white cross on
State Highway 1 near Timaru was not "What have we here?". That, I

shoulder, on a stretch of green verge beside the road.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

Hard questions about Pope Benedict in Africa
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/hard-questions-about-pope-benedict-africa

Benedict XVI said he came to Benin, a country of eight million in West
Africa, to deliver a message of hope. Throughout the Nov. 18-20 trip,
he repeatedly invoked the image of Africa as a "spiritual lung" for
humanity, praising its deeply religious worldview and stressing that
the joy, resilience and traditional moral values of Africa are
precious gifts to the world. Spiritually speaking, Africa is a
superpower -- both the world's largest manufacturer and consumer of
religion. For a pope who has spent a lifetime lamenting the "death of
God" in Europe, Africa can't help but seem an oasis of vibrant faith.
Africans seemed to return the sentiment.

Memo to bishops: Think globally on religious freedom
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/memo-bishops-think-globally-religious-freedom

During their fall meeting this week in Baltimore, the U.S. bishops
heard a report from their new Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty,
led by Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, Conn. It's a measure of how
seriously the bishops take the subject that the committee includes
heavyweights such as Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington as well as
Archbishops Charles Chaput of Philadelphia and Wilton Gregory of
Atlanta. The committee was created primarily to fight American
church/state battles, such as proposed mandates from the Department of
Health and Human Services regarding coverage of contraception and
sterilization in private insurance plans; a Supreme Court case that
could erode the "ministerial exception" allowing religious groups to
hire and fire in accord with their beliefs; and threats to the ability
of Catholic individuals and organizations to decline to serve same-sex
couples under gay marriage laws...

Thinking About Heaven. A History of Sacred Heart Parish, Timaru by
Sean G Brosnahan (book review)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/entertainment/book-reviews/5951277/Cathedrals-past-big-part-of-Timaru
The near-destruction of Christchurch's Anglican and Catholic
cathedrals in the February 22 earthquake has left Timaru's basilica as
one of the most important examples of religious architecture in
Canterbury. So it is extremely appropriate that a highly readable
history of the Sacred Heart parish, including a detailed account of
the basilica's construction, has been published to coincide with the
building's October's centenary celebrations.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

A rabbi and archbishop connect, and thoughts for new theologians
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/rabbi-and-archbishop-connect-and-thoughts-new-theologians

It sounds like the setup to a classic religion joke: A rabbi, an
archbishop and a reporter walk into a bar. Instead, it was Tuesday
night, as I moderated a public conversation in New York between
Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Rabbi Naomi Levy, staged at the city's
famed 92nd Street Y. It was quite a night, with something compelling
to say on at least three fronts: the state of Catholic/Jewish
relations, the future of religious moderation (as opposed to extremism
and fundamentalism) and how people of both deep convictions and
goodwill can find common ground even when they don't agree on
everything.

Election votes must consider the good of all, say Catholic bishops (2 Nov 2011)

New Zealand's Catholic bishops have asked New Zealanders and
especially Catholics to consider the common good of all when they vote
in the November general election. In a statement being distributed to
Catholic parishes throughout the country, the bishops emphasise that
politics is not a private affair and that the election is an
opportunity to help secure the common good ...

Poverty to most Kiwis is starving children in Africa or families

feeding the kids a loaf of white bread and chips for dinner, because
it's cheap...

Green Party calls for end to royal 'religious discrimination'
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10762078
The next royal ruler after Queen Elizabeth II can not be Catholic,
something the NZ Green Party says is pure discrimination.
[The Commonwealth heads of government have agreed that in future a
member of the Royal Family will not lose their right of succession to
the throne just for marrying a Catholic. They will still do so if they
*become* a Catholic, since the monarch is the head of the Church of
England and so must be a member of that Church. The succession of a
Catholic to the throne, as the Green Party proposes, would detach the
monarch from the Church of England, which is the ultimate goal of
secularists such as Keith Locke - ML]

Petre's masterpiece (photos)

It is a famous story. When George Bernard Shaw was visiting
Christchurch in 1934 he remarked on the beauty of the Cathedral of the
Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes St. Naturally, his hosts in this
Anglican city thought he meant the Anglican cathedral in the Square.
"No," said Shaw, "the one down by the gasworks." If it is true, the
playwright was being unusually mundane. After all, this was the man
who said, "I'm an atheist and I thank God for it."

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

A papal contender grabs the spotlight
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/papal-contender-grabs-spotlight

Rome saw a striking coincidence this week, which could be either
simple luck or a sign of things to come. There were two big-ticket
Vatican news flashes, Monday's note on reform of the international
economy and Thursday's summit of religious leaders in Assisi. In both
cases, the same Vatican official was a prime mover: Cardinal Peter
Turkson of Ghana, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and
Peace.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

Secularism, a new papal contender and Catholic humor
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/secularism-new-papal-contender-and-catholic-humor

Two-thirds of the world's Catholic population today is in the southern
hemisphere, a share that should reach three-quarters by mid-century.
To discern where the church is headed, it's critical to keep an eye on
what's bubbling down south, and two recent stories thus deserve to be
on the global Catholic radar screen...
