The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament once housed a meeting room in its now demolished south tower; a belfry full of scores and musical archives. Stands, lights, instruments, and music storage cupboards filled the galleries. Today on the cathedral's northern tower sit the sad remnants of its choir room, wall posters fluttering and lights swinging in the wind.

Benedict's gentle debunk of clericalism
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedicts-gentle-debunk-clericalism

Pope Benedict XVI's diplomatic high-wire act in Havana, pressing the case for religious freedom but avoiding direct clash with the Castro regime, was the main news flash out of his March 23-28 trip to Mexico and Cuba. There's also a mounting perception that for all of Benedict's brilliance as a teacher, something isn't working in the internal governance of the Vatican. With this perceived crisis of competence in the background, two prominent voices in Italy have, in effect, declared the informal papal transition season to be open ...

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Lent 2012 began on Ash Wednesday 22 February and ends with Easter on 8 April. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand's theme for Lent 2012 is "Called by faith to act with generous hearts". This theme was inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI addressed to the Caritas Internationalis General Assembly for 2011.

The Lenten theme is being promoted in schools as "Hearts filled with hope" – recognising that good people everywhere have hopeful hearts. Our schools resource was sent to all Catholic schools in early December and is also downloadable from the Website. Will he be able to do so? Or will Rick Santorum bounce back? What about Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul? The panel also discusses the way Catholics have voted in the primaries thus far, Rick Santorum's criticism of JFK, a group declaring war on the US Government and a new movie assessing if America is broken and, if so, how to fix it. February 28, 2012: In the second episode of 'The View from Down Here', Brendan, Tim and Gavin revisit the Republican primary contest and, in particular, look at Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas. Is he being ignored by the media? Does he have a chance to win the nomination? Can — and should — Catholic voters support him? We look at a pundit's view of that, and also deconstruct an opponent of Rick Santorum who tries to portray the former Pennsylvania senator as not a very good Catholic. Finally, we look at the way atheists are fighting for their rights to not be offended by such outrageous words as "Amen" and "prayer".

The View from Down Here (February 21, 2012)

In the newest show in the Station 15 stable, Brendan and Tim Malone, from Christchurch, NZ, speak with fellow New Zealander Gavin Abraham, now based in Australia, on some of the big stories in the United States that straddle the divide of Catholicism and politics. In this inaugural episode of The View from Down Here, the guys talk about the controversial Health and Human Services mandate on providing contraception and sterilisation free to women, as well as a first look at the Republican primary contest, as the GOP looks for the person to take on President Barack Obama in November's election.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Is it time for a Jacobin pope? Plus, musings on an American
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/it-time-jacobin-pope-plus-musings-american

As a thought exercise, ask yourself what period of time the following paragraph about the Vatican seems to reflect: "For those who've seen the place in better days, the Vatican looks deeply troubled. In the absence of strong leadership, internal tensions seem to be bursting into view. Even at the height of his powers, the pope took scant interest in governance. As he ages and becomes more limited, a sense of drift is mounting -- a conviction that hard choices must await a new day, and probably a new pontiff" ...

Station XV: Episode 53 — New legislation, new brothel (?) new partnership (February 15, 2012)

The panel this month analyses the contentious provisions in President Obama's health care legislation requiring Catholic hospitals and institutions to provide health insurance covering contraception and sterilisation procedures*, efforts by Auckland businessmen to open a 15-storey brothel in the central city and the Pope's concerning admission that Christianity risks oblivion. But, in the good news of the month, Station 15/Icon Media has become an affiliate of the international Catholic podcasting network, SQPN. We're really excited to be part of the SQPN stable, an extension of the great relationship we've had with Father Roderick Vonhogen over the past three years or so.

* This episode was recorded before President Obama's announcement of changes to the health care legislation in response to the bishops Church's concerns

Five questions about the Vatican's leaks scandal

In the run-up to a consistory, Rome takes on the atmosphere of a college reunion. Church people from all over turn up, making it hard to walk down the street without bumping into someone you know. That's been the case this week, ahead of Saturday's consistory in which Pope Benedict XVI will create 22 new cardinals, including Americans Timothy Dolan and Edwin O'Brien ...
