Rain from the heavens delayed the move of Our Lady of Fatima Church
for four days last week. The parish hall in Innes Rd (Christchurch)
was loaded up on trucks in preparation for being moved on Monday, but
as pouring rain turned the new site to mud the move had to be delayed
until the land could dry out.

Manawatu secondary school students' book smarts are above average when
it comes to NCEA, with principals saying the extra effort put into
pupils is paying off. Hato Paora had a 100 per cent pass rate in

I'm not saying it happens all the time, it was an accumulation of five
years hard work."

A chance to show solidarity with those living in poverty saw 46
students from Marian College and Catholic Cathedral College sleep
"rough" last weekend. As part of the first nationwide challenge,
initiated by Caritas, a Catholic charity, students were sponsored to
spend 24 hours sleeping outside in cardboard boxes, eating at a soup
kitchen and undertaking activities to help them understand the
everyday issues faced by those in the Solomon Islands.

Young Wellingtonians spent a night sleeping outside in a cardboard box
as part of a campaign to raise awareness about poverty. The
Johnsonville event was set up by the Challenge 2000 Youth Group, while
students from St Catherine's and St Patrick held a similar event in
Kilbirnie. All funds raised went to the Solomon Islands, where floods
have left seven dead, 30 missing and 10,000 homeless

A 40-day anti-abortion prayer vigil protest outside Wellington
Hospital has resulted in staff steering vulnerable female patients to
alternative hospital entries. Catholic organisation Family Life
International's vigil, part of a 40 Days for Life campaign, is due to
continue from 8am until 8pm each day until April 13, in the lead-up to
Easter in honour of Lent.

Long-serving priest could talk to anyone

When Father Francis Patrick Garty, QSM, spoke, people listened. The
Catholic priest served the church for nearly 70 years before he died
at New Plymouth's Sunhaven Rest Home on Tuesday, aged 93.

Sister Loyola Galvin may be in retirement but she is still gardening.

Mateparae in a ceremony at Government House today. She was made a
Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to gardening.

Historic convent taking shape (photo)

A century-old convent's transformation into a gracious family home got
a tick from perhaps the hardest people to please - the nuns who used
to live there. The former Brigidine Sisters convent, built in Pahiatua
in 1912, was bought and trucked to Greytown in December by retired
academic John Bushnell to be turned into a four-bedroom home for him
and his wife.

The Hamilton East Community Trust has been awarded $38,000 from the
Ministry for the Environment's Environmental Legal Assistance Fund to
assist with its fight to save the historic Euphrasie House in Clyde St
from demolition. The 75-year-old Spanish styled convent had been used
as a boarding hostel for girls attending the Catholic Sacred Heart
Girls' College across the road.

It was a sparkling late summer Wellington day. Mother Teresa looked up
to the affluent hills above Oriental Bay in Wellington and saw
suffering. "It's probable, living in some of those big wealthy homes,
is a lot of need," she told her driver, Allan Devlin.

John L. Allen's Column In The Boston Globe

Francis shows political instincts in naming anti-abuse panel, Obama
meets Francis, Cardinal v. Cardinal, and the global war on Christians
http://goo.gl/4N5p71

Pope Francis captured the imagination of the world within hours after
his election a year ago through his flashes of humility, and that's
not just a PR facade. In Argentina, he was known as a "bishop of the
villas," referring to the vast slums that ring Buenos Aires, because
he had a special love for the poor. Yet one should never forget that
beneath that simple exterior lies the mind of a brilliant Jesuit
politician. That savvy was on display again Saturday, when Francis
rolled out the initial members for a new Vatican commission to lead
the charge in the fight against clerical sexual abuse...
