Surprise! One of the Church's family issues is polygamy
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/09/11/surprise-one-of-the-churchs-family-issues-is-polygamy/
Say "family issues" to most Americans or Europeans, and they're likely
to flash on divorce, or the challenges of single-parent households, or
perhaps same-sex relationships and the push for gay marriage. What
probably wouldn't come naturally to mind is polygamy. Yet in many
parts of the non-Western world, polygamy is a major feature of family
life, and thus a major pastoral challenge for the Catholic Church...

Archbishop John Dew: Outrage over dirty tricks healthy

The Greek philosopher Aristotle referred to teaching and politics as

most New Zealanders about the former, but less so about the latter,
particularly in the wake of the Dirty Politics revelations, and the
political debate that has swirled around them ...

The role faith plays in the lives of Taranaki people has changed
through the years. In 2013, more than 10,000

Hard questions we're not asking Pope Francis
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/09/02/hard-questions-were-not-asking-pope-francis/
Pope Francis is an undeniably attractive figure whose concern for
people at society's margins can be awesome to behold. As a result,
it's almost impossible sometimes not to go soft on the man. Yet
precisely because there's so much to like, Francis sometimes gets a
free pass on the sort of legitimate questions any other leader would
attract. At least four hard questions we should be asking more often
come to mind...

Hard questions we're not asking Pope Francis
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/09/02/hard-questions-were-not-asking-pope-francis/
Pope Francis is an undeniably attractive figure whose concern for
people at society's margins can be awesome to behold. As a result,
it's almost impossible sometimes not to go soft on the man. Yet
precisely because there's so much to like, Francis sometimes gets a
free pass on the sort of legitimate questions any other leader would
attract. At least four hard questions we should be asking more often
come to mind...

Life behind the wall
http://origin-interactives.stuff.co.nz/carmel/
Along a main road in Christchurch, 15 minutes from the city's centre,
a block of land is enclosed by a high stone wall. Most passersby
wouldn't know this is the Carmelite Monastery, home to 10 women — nuns
— who have committed their lives to contemplative prayer and a deep
relationship with God. Shut off from the world, they pray for us. For
this story, Carmelite Sister Cushla borrowed our reporter's camera to
document scenes of the nuns' daily life, offering the world a glimpse
behind the wall...

Understandably, reaction to Pope Francis' latest airborne press
conference on Aug. 18, during his return flight from South Korea to
Rome, has centered on whether his comments on US airstrikes in Iraq
represent an endorsement or a rebuke. Whatever one makes of the
answer, everyone knew the question was coming and the pope had been
prepped. His words seemed to reflect some diplomatic balance and

August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, which makes this
episode our birthday episode! We have been running this podcast for 7

stories of the day – the Pope in South Korea, the NZ Catholic Bishops'
voting advice, the terrible persecution of Christians around the
world, the paganisation of rural NZ – and then reflect a bit back on 7
years of podcasting. Thanks for listening!

Pope Francis continued his five-day trip to South Korea Saturday,
proving that his reputation as a magnet for humanity extends to Asia
too. His Saturday morning Mass drew a crowd estimated by the Vatican
to be 800,000 to a downtown Seoul square, where the pontiff beatified

occasion to deliver a trademark plea for social justice, saying that
the memory of past martyrs should call believers to acts of charity.
The pope said that "alongside immense wealth, dire poverty is silently
growing" and lamented that "the cry of the poor is seldom heard"

Almost one million families will be eligible for low- and no-interest
loans under a new government-backed scheme aimed at saving low-income
families from "loan sharks", copied from similar schemes run in
Australia for the past decade by BNZ's parent company National

Episode 83 – Happy 7 years of podcasting! (August 15, 2014)
August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, which makes this
episode our birthday episode! We have been running this podcast for 7
years, and in this episode, we spend some time talking through the
stories of the day – the Pope in South Korea, the NZ Catholic Bishops'
voting advice, the terrible persecution of Christians around the
world, the paganisation of rural NZ – and then reflect a bit back on 7
years of podcasting.

124 Korean martyrs from the 18th and 19th centuries. Francis used the
occasion to deliver a trademark plea for social justice, saying that
the memory of past martyrs should call believers to acts of charity.
The pope said that "alongside immense wealth, dire poverty is silently
growing" and lamented that "the cry of the poor is seldom heard"

talking of their abuse for the first time.

It seems odd to be celebrating the start of a war, rather than the
end, and less likely to call the war "great", but there's no doubt
that the stories from the war are both great and worth celebrating.
It's these intimate stories and traditional home crafts that the Navy
Museum has been taking to Auckland high schools with workshops to
create a public art exhibition.

Immigration becomes 'pro-life' issue for Catholic leaders
http://www.bostonglobe.com/news/world/2014/08/02/immigration-takes-its-place-pro-life-issue-for-catholic-church-leaders/LwwqcL3WlOhyWqMdiWtgqL/story.html
As Congress ponders faster ways of deporting kids from Central America
trying to cross the US border to flee poverty and violence, the
Catholic Church is emerging as their first line of defense. This past
week brought not only a rare papal intervention in American politics,
but a historic first from the country's Jesuits. Whatever the
political results of those efforts, the big picture for the church is
that immigration is taking its place at the Catholic table as a fully
"pro-life" issue... [Also: Anti-ISIS backlash, a tour of Pope Francis'
Rome, and the debut of Crux]
