Latest 'Rolling Stone' cover captures Francis's appeal to Millenials
Pope Francis once more graces the cover of "Rolling Stone" magazine. Written on the front page is "Francis, Pop Pope" in reference to the pontiff's ability to gain influence and popularity worldwide. But his main allies might be the most misunderstood generation of all: Millennials.

** Rules of thumb for processing the latest papal bombshell
Pope Francis has an endless capacity for memorable media soundbites, and he was at it again on Wednesday in a new interview with a German newspaper. Pastors are increasingly trying to help ordinary Catholics process these bombshells, and here are three basic rules of thumb.

Episode 113 — Praise, criticism, tragedies and comedy (February 16, 2017)

It's been a manic first (almost) month in the Trump presidency, and the US bishops have been both praising and criticising the President. In Australia, the bishops have been more focused on repentance, as damning statistics emerge about the extent of sexual abuse in the Church there. Back in New Zealand, there's more analysis of the changing religious landscape and, internationally, there's conjecture about a new translation of the Mass. But what would Jesus tweet? Catholic comedian Stephen Colbert offers his thoughts. Join Don, James and Gavin for the latest episode of The 15th Station.

New church opens in Moerewa (photo)
A new church has been opened in Moerewa more than 60 years after the community started fundraising to build it. The Catholic Church of St Therese of Lisieux, on Snowden Ave, was consecrated on Saturday by the Bishop of Auckland Patrick Dunn with about 400 people in attendance.

Bob Houston: Debate for Justin du Fresne (audio report)
Former Newstalk ZB host Justin du Fresne was a big supporter of the Kapiti Catholic church before his death last year. The church is trying to raise money for a new chapel, and is organising a debate with a host of well known New Zealanders to help. Bryan Waddle, Jim Bolger, Judge Sir David Carruthers and more are on board, and organiser Bob Houston joined us to talk more about it.

Looking grim for 1877 convent (photos, video)
Queenstown's 140-year-old Dominican convent is on borrowed time. Home to the resort's Dominican Sisters for more than 130 years, the stone building has been unoccupied since 2003 and is considered earthquake-prone.

News of the Schools

Stained-glass artist reluctant to part with chapel windows (photos)
The face behind the new windows in the Sacred Heart Girls College's [New Plymouth] chapel is smiling. Eltham-based Paul Burgham has spent more than 18 months preparing, creating and fitting the chapel with its new stained-glass windows, and said he was pleased,  although he admitted it was a matter of "as happy as you can be with your own work".

Blenheim's St Mary's School has new principal after 15 years (photo)
The new principal of St Mary's School in Blenheim is looking forward to teaching at Blenheim's only Catholic primary school. Patrick Dowling is transferring to the school from Bohally Intermediate School, in Blenheim, where he was deputy principal.

STATION XV

Episode 112 — New year, new approach, new relationship, new lyrics (January 16, 2017)

Pope Francis has expressed optimism that 2017 can be a good year while also acknowledging the deadly start to the year in Turkey and the challenge of people embracing peace and rejecting hatred. The Pope has also called for bishops to redouble their efforts in stamping out child sexual abuse in the Church. The Vatican is looking to strengthen ties with China, but China has its own views of how the Church should be allowed to operate in the Communist country. Cardinal John Dew wants to strengthen the Church's ties with young people, showing them what a life in service of others can offer. In Sri Lanka, a Christmas carol service offered something a bit different, with the wrong Hail Mary lyrics printed in the hymn booklet. Join Don, James and Gavin for another wide-ranging episode of The 15th Station.

Parsing Pope Francis's puzzling take on religion in China

Although most reaction to Pope Francis's latest blockbuster interview has focused on his comments on political populism and Donald Trump, religious freedom advocates may find his words about China distressing, especially the suggestion that one can "practice religion" there.
