NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

Step out and Vote: Bishops' 2017 Election Statement - 6 July 2017
Even when the choices to be made seem difficult or the questions to be asked too tough, are we tackling some of the big challenges facing us as a nation and as part of a global community? With the 2017 General Election in just over two months, this is the message of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops in their 2017 Election Statement, Step out and Vote.

Samuel Brebner: Charges don't gel with the Cardinal Pell I knew
Last Thursday the Victoria police announced they are filing "multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offences" against Cardinal George Pell. News of the charges wasn't a complete shock. As Cardinal Pell himself said, "these matters" have been under investigation for nearly two years. It's an investigation I've followed with interest, both as a previous associate of Cardinal Pell's and as a law student.

** Theological titan of India dies at age of 78
Father Augustine Kanjamala, SVD, was one of the first priests to minister to the migrants who flooded Mumbai to work as maids and domestic workers, both by offering Mass in Hindi, and by informing them of how to secure their rights and lobby for fair labor practices. Among his books are 1981's Religion and Modernization of India and 2014's The Future of Christian Mission in India.

The June 10 Weekend Herald published an article by Matt Vickers, husband of Lecretia Seales, who died last year, shortly before the Health Select Committee set up an inquiry to investigate the issue of assisted dying. For reasons of privacy it is not possible to publish pictures of the many people who have been helped by the care and attention they have received at Waipuna Hospice, but as a doctor who has worked there for many years, I felt I could not let this article go past without pointing out that euthanasia is not the only answer to the serious concerns people have about the end of life, nor is it the most compassionate...

** Abuse charges against Pell not good news for Vatican financial reform
With criminal charges of sexual abuse having been filed against Cardinal George Pell in his home country of Australia, many questions will be asked, most about the accusations and Pell's defense. ** Bishop says secular Danes like Francis enough to 'forgive him' for being Catholic

Denmark, like other Nordic countries, is considered to be one of the most thoroughly secular cultures on earth, which means that traditional Catholic teaching on issues such as abortion, women priests and gay marriage often generates reactions ranging from incomprehension to hostility. Such is Pope Francis's popularity, however, that Bishop Czeslaw Kozon says most Danes "forgive him" for upholding those positions.

Shakti, a women's refuge
Fe Alma Demafeliz's upstairs office at Historic Village is an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture, coffee mugs, dog-eared posters and paperwork.
