Samuel Brebner: Charges don't gel with the Cardinal Pell I knew
Last Thursday the Victoria police announced they are filing "multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offences" against Cardinal George Pell. News of the charges wasn't a complete shock. As Cardinal Pell himself said, "these matters" have been under investigation for nearly two years. It's an investigation I've followed with interest, both as a previous associate of Cardinal Pell's and as a law student.

The remaining trio, Sisters of Mercy Pauline O'Regan, Helen Goggin and Marie McCrea, have been farewelled by their parish. The valedictory was given by a young mother who attained her doctorate thanks in great part to the late Sister Theresa O'Connor, one of the small group who set up the North-East Christchurch Community Development Scheme ...

In his latest Google Hangout with youth from around the world on Friday, Pope Francis said that a life which isn't shared with others "belongs in the museum," and urged young people not to succumb to an "elitist education" but to be agents of a "human globalization," one which doesn't annul differences but which is respect of the diversity of all the people involved.

Christchurch religious leaders rally for Anglican bishop Victoria Matthews (photos)
Christchurch religious leaders have rallied to support Anglican bishop Victoria Matthews in her battle over the Christ Church Cathedral. Eight religious leaders from all the major Christian denominations – including Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic – have written a letter to The Press calling for Anglicans to be "left to make decisions as to the future of the cathedral".

Lutherans and Catholics Step Closer to Unity
The movement towards healing the 500 years of separation between Lutherans and Roman Catholics takes a step closer in New Zealand next week. On Sunday 4 June Lutheran Bishop Mark Whitfield and Cardinal John Dew will open a formal dialogue for the two Christian denominations with a combined ecumenical service in Sacred Heart Cathedral to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Year of Reformation.

The Institute is under the auspices of the Canon Law Society of Australia and New Zealand and is affiliated with the Catholic Institute of Sydney.

Fe Alma Demafeliz's upstairs office at Historic Village is an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture, coffee mugs, dog-eared posters and paperwork. Her narrow tan desk sits in front of a window with a scalloped lace curtain that stops about 5cm too short of the ledge. The number of women coming here to Shakti - a women's refuge for Middle Eastern, Asian and African women - is up 30 per cent in a year.

Pope Francis and President Donald Trump had a "cordial" talk Wednesday morning, according to a Vatican statement, which said they focused on areas of agreement including a "joint commitment in favor of life, and freedom of worship and conscience."

** Pope in Genoa challenges the 'worldliness' of Catholic life
In a busy morning, Pope Francis said that the Church is interested in the "dignity of work" because even Jesus was a worker, acknowledged the role religious people have had in the drop in vocations by leading a worldly life, and challenged the young people of Genoa to question whatever the surrounding culture presents as normal, including the fact that the Mediterranean Sea has become a cemetery.
