NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

A pregnant woman is a mother whose child also needs a voice in our public debate. (1 Sep 2017)

(full text)

There has been a lot of political debate around the decriminalising of abortion this week. Catholics' view on this issue is well known and is shared by many others too. Take, for example, the very real concerns expressed this week by advocacy group, Saving Downs, on the push by some groups to introduce abortion right through to birth for disabilities. Our concern is the well-being of the mother and child. Much talk focuses on the rights of the pregnant woman and in fact the current legislation doesn't criminalize a woman who procures an abortion. We ask Kiwis to remember that a pregnant woman is a mother whose child also needs a voice in our public debate.

THE FIFTEENTH STATION

Episode 119 — Electing, Protecting, Translating, Counting and Baptising (September 15, 2017)

As New Zealanders prepare to vote in their national election, the issue of abortion — and the views of the Catholic Prime Minister — were put front and centre. Meanwhile, Pope Francis is seeking to empower local bishops' conferences and protect the planet, through separate initiatives. In the US, religious affiliation numbers are seeing a drift away from Christianity and a rise of Latino Catholics. We're not sure any of those faithful Catholics would choose to baptise their children in a sporting trophy, but an NHL champion has. Enjoy the show

** Why this bishop thinks memes may just be the tool for evangelization today

Bishop Richard Umbers, an auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Sydney, says whether in art, online culture, or political discussion, Christians should be giving an example of how to evangelize and to speak to the challenges society faces today. "You need the contemporary expression of Christian faith."
