Christchurch's new Bishop Ordained (28 Feb 2018)

On Saturday, 3 March 2018, the Catholic Church will ordain Bishop-Elect Paul Martin SM as the new Bishop of Christchurch. In December last year, the Vatican announced the appointment of Father Paul Martin SM as the next Bishop of the Christchurch Diocese. He will be the tenth Bishop of Christchurch and succeeds Bishop Barry Jones, who died in February 2016.  His Eminence Cardinal John Dew, Archbishop of Wellington, will ordain Bishop-Elect Paul ...

Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, far more important than the Valentine's Day it happened to land on because all around the world ex-Catholic sots, a massive tribe, give up the drink for 46 days out of habit and some sort of sense of obligation.

Caritas goes to work on Gita response
In just over 72 hours Tropical Cyclone Gita has swept across islands of the Pacific causing substantial damage to homes, livelihoods, places of refuge, and places of prayer. This is certainly the case in Tonga where Gita made landfall late 12 February as a category 4 tropical storm. Winds raged between 110 and 275 kmph causing waves over 11 metres tall.

Hamilton's Roman Catholic Diocese has been accused of fear-mongering over the proposed euthanasia law. Submission forms printed for parishioners to fill in to oppose the bill say euthanasia could apply to people with gluten intolerance, arthritis and asthma.

A woman instrumental in setting up kohanga reo in South Taranaki and nationwide has been honoured by those who worked alongside her. Matekitawhiti Carr, 95, better known as "Aunty Mate" or "Nan" to many, was all smiles as she received recognition of her 35 years service to kohanga reo and her 65 years' involvement with Te Ropu Wahine Maori Toko I te Ora (Maori Women's Welfare League) on Friday in a ceremony at Trinity Rest Home, Hawera, where she lives.

The tiny Jacobs River Church was a casualty of ex-Cyclone Fehi's trail of destruction through Hokitika and South Westland.

Press Release: Caritas Aotearoa
Caritas, as one of four organisations approved for the new Community Organisation Refugee Sponsorship (CORS) programme, will lead the coordination of a number of Catholic organisations who will support a refugee family to settle in New Zealand.

Veteran journalist Pat Booth dies, aged 88
Veteran journalist Pat Booth has passed away at a rest home in Kumeu after a short illness. Sally Collings, his youngest daughter, confirmed he passed away about 1.20pm today. "Pat Booth was a very respected journalist, but not only that he was loving father of four children," she said. "We will miss him and his stories ... and we love him." Ms Collings said her father was proud of his work covering the infamous Arthur Allan Thomas case, and the Mr Asia crime syndicates.

First new Catholic church in Christchurch since quake is a 'jewel in the crown' for sisters (photos)
Christchurch's first new Catholic church since the earthquakes – the rebuilt Nazareth House chapel – has been opened. The chapel replaces one lost to the earthquakes at the Sydenham site and has been built as part of a $70 million development by the Sisters of Nazareth.

When former shepherd Father Michael Hishon was in his 20s, he changed his flock from sheep to people. At the age of 29, the Lincoln University graduate, who also worked in sheep genetics for the former Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, entered the Catholic priesthood.

Erskine College chapel will 'finally' be strengthened after court decision (photos)
An Environment Court decision has backed plans to demolish heritage buildings at Island Bay's Erskine College to make way for 96 townhouses. A condition of the Environment Court consent is that the dilapidated chapel on the site must be strengthened before any other work, including demolition, can take place.

Life story: Jack Ryan's solid foundations for success (photos)
The contractor, goldminer, farmer, forester and land developer had strong work ethic and worked until a year before his death on November 25, last year, aged 91. He was the last of the Ryan brothers, who ran a prominent contracting business in Christchurch.
