The Caritas Lenten Reflection Programme


Each year the Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, including in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Lent 2019 theme – "Living Our Lives with Love" – is taken from "Gaudete et Exsultate – Rejoice and Exult" by Pope Francis. The key themes are new beginnings, patience, compassion, mercy and love. 

Resources and the Lenten Reflection Programmes are prepared each year for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Links to the resources are available on the linked page.

Pope's new youth doc draws largely rave reviews from young consultants
Pope Francis on Tuesday published a new document dedicated to youth, bringing full-circle a process of consultation that began last year when the Vatican reached out to young people around the world ahead of an October summit of bishops on how to better approach them. Called Christus Vivit, the document is 180 pages long and takes into consideration not only what was said during the Synod of Bishops but also what the youth said during a pre-synod gathering that took place in Rome several months earlier...

This morning, Pope Francis was scheduled to be meeting with members of the LGBTQ community at the Vatican. The encounter is expected to be private, but French journalist Frédéric Martel asserted the pontiff is expected to give an "historic speech" during the event. That claim caused sufficient media buzz that a Vatican spokesman felt compelled Thursday to "categorically deny" that the pontiff would do so...

The Caritas Lenten Reflection Programme


Each year the Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, including in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Lent 2019 theme – "Living Our Lives with Love" – is taken from "Gaudete et Exsultate – Rejoice and Exult" by Pope Francis. The key themes are new beginnings, patience, compassion, mercy and love. 

Resources and the Lenten Reflection Programmes are prepared each year for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Links to the resources are available on the linked page.

Government axes 'medieval, archaic and unjust' laws
The Government has repealed a law that Justice Minister Andrew Little has described as "medieval, archaic and unjust".
Parliament last night unanimously passed the Crimes Amendment Bill, which repealed the "year and a day" rule as well as axed laws prohibiting blasphemy and imposed harsher sentences for would-be livestock thieves.

Child sexual abuse inquiry scope clarified
Priests who abused children in their own homes will be included in a Royal Commission into historical sexual abuse. The move is being described as a change-in-scope by advocates but the Royal Commission says it is only a clarification of the exiting scope.

The selling off of churches is not merely short-sighted, but shows a lack of trust in God, writes Greg Tanner.

Volunteers wanted to help with appeal
Collectors will be out on March 8 for the annual Dunedin Hospital Chaplaincy Street Appeal. The chaplaincy team at Dunedin Hospital includes four Ecumenical chaplains, a Maori chaplain and a Catholic chaplain and nine voluntary chaplaincy assistants, as well as other volunteers who play the organ at Sunday services, hostesses who invite patients to chapel services and other church and community groups who help take patients in beds and wheelchairs to and from services.

Private investigators to examine school in Dunedin
The Catholic Church's National Office for Professional Standards has called in private investigators to examine historic sexual abuse at a former Dunedin high school. Corporate Risks, a licensed private investigation firm based in Christchurch, has sent a staff member to Dunedin to interview victims of historic abuse at the former Catholic education institution, St Paul's High School.

Nelson Catholic school's punishments too severe for Victorian New Zealand
An inquiry in 1900 found that the punishments used at the Stoke orphanage in Nelson were too severe.

Abuse survivor reps travelling to Rome
Two men with Dunedin links are winging their way to Rome to join the fight for "zero tolerance'' of sexual abuse and cover-ups within the Catholic Church.

Survivor denied entry to Vatican
A Dunedin survivor of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church has been turned away from the gates to the Vatican by its Swiss Guard. Darryl Smith flew to Rome this week to participate in survivor meetings timed to coincide with a gathering of the leaders of bishops' conferences from around the world.

Obituary: Dan O'Leary, a man of substance, character and quiet devotion
His warm-hearted, gracious, intelligent nature were just some of the many qualities that drew people of all walks of life to Daniel Anthony O'Leary. Known simply as Dan by family and friend alike, the affable retired Whanganui farmer passed away on  February 15 in Whanganui Hospital.

Quake rating forces church to close
Te Puke Times
St Patrick's Catholic Church in Te Puke has had to close its doors. An initial earthquake assessment has seen the building rated category E, the worst possible ranking. However, worshippers will still be able to attend Mass, with Anglican vicar Rev Ruth Dewdney stepping in to offer St John the Baptist Church in Jocelyn St as a venue.
