Supporters of uniforms say kids spend more time on school work and less time critiquing each other's outfits, and this may be true. But the real argument isn't about whether to have a uniform per se - it's about the cost. This perennial gripe blew up again on social media this week as Kiwis compared uniform costs - some of which are eye-wateringly high...

The pain in Spain: Camino Skies star Terry Wilson sees the trek as a 'metaphor for life'
https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/kiwi-traveller/113828709/the-pain-in-spain-camino-skies-star-terry-wilson-sees-the-trek-as-a-metaphor-for-life
Heading into a village along the Camino De Santiago in northern Spain, Terry Wilson was stopped by an unusually chatty old man.  Locals along the famous pilgrimage route don't often stop to talk to walkers because there are so many "they'd be there all day if they did", Terry says. But this man showed a keen interest in the then-68-year-old from Manawatu. When Terry told him he was from New Zealand, the stranger drew almost too close for comfort...

Mary Potter Hospice, which this week celebrates its 40th anniversary, was established to provide free-of-charge palliative care to the people of Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti.Setting up such a service wasn't without its challenges, with people's idea of dealing with dying to simply "put them in the corridor" or "out in the ground" and not talk about it. It was that attitude that Margaret Lancaster and her fellow Sisters of the Little Company of Mary wanted to change for the better.

The sainthood of John Henry Newman a chance for left-right unity in the Church
https://cruxnow.com/news-analysis/2019/07/05/the-sainthood-of-john-henry-newman-a-chance-for-left-right-unity-in-the-church/
This week's announcement that Blessed John Henry Newman will be made a saint on Oct. 13 was greeted with celebration from all corners. Newman is considered a precursor to Vatican II: His writings on the Church Fathers anticipated the ressourcement theology of the mid-20th century, and his emphasis on the conscience and explanations of the development of doctrine have been a central point of post-conciliar theology. This is not to say Newman was a modern-day liberal, but it does put the new saint in an interesting category: He is embraced by most of both the Catholic left and right not so much for the holiness of his life - which for a saint, strangely doesn't get a lot of print - but for his theology...

Saints Next Door video competition 2019
https://www.videocompetition.co.nz/

The Catholic Enquiry Centre is running a video competition open to all young people interested in sharing Pope Francis' Saint Next Door message. Pope Francis, in 2018, explained that we all can be holy. Being a Saint is not limited to high profile individuals. We all have a part to play in our communities. If we follow the values that Jesus taught, this help can improve the worlds we live in.

We need your help to tell the stories of the Saints that live in your world. Your hero could be a coach, teacher, friend, neighbour or family member. If you can capture the special things they do, then you could win yourself some cool new technology.  Registration deadline: 23 August 2019. Entries must be submitted online by 30 August 2019.
