Joy marks first celebration of Mass since lockdown
People were beaming with joy as they entered St Patrick's Basilica in South Dunedin yesterday to celebrate Mass, Fr Gerard Aynsley says. The Mercy Parish-Whanau Aroha priest said Mass was some way off normal — chairs were separated and people signed in and out and could not mingle — but parishioners appreciated being back.

Return to larger gatherings in Taranaki
It was a tentative but good return to mass at New Plymouth's St Joseph's Church on Sunday, as the limit on gatherings in New Zealand went up from 10 to 100. As of mid-afternoon, they had had three masses which were at 100 people and one with 35, with still the evening services to go, Father Simon Story said.

Churches reopen on Sunday as COVID-19 restrictions ease

Palmerston North's Catholic churches are resuming services this weekend now restrictions on gatherings have eased under Covid-19 alert level 2.

Anthony Faitaua, a well-regarded educator known for his work in the Pasifika community, has been honoured after he died of cancer. Students at Auckland's Marist College, the school at the centre of the country's second-largest coronavirus cluster, have returned to their classrooms for the first time in two months.

Children are legally required to attend school under alert level 2 but not all returned in South Canterbury when they re-opened on Monday.

Pupils across the South swapped home learning and virtual meetings for the classroom yesterday, as schools opened their doors for the first time in Level 2.

Joy, tears and nerves as students return to class around New Zealand
Students across New Zealand have flocked to classes for the first time in nearly two months. In a day filled with hugs, tears, excitement and trepidation, schools reopened on Monday as part of the move to lockdown level 2. While classrooms have been open to younger children if needed since level 3, attendance levels have been low, with the vast majority opting to keep learning from home.

School went back this week on Monday after the move to alert level 2 last week and it seems most local students are glad to be back.
