** Caritas Aotearoa NZ will provide urgent funding for Lebanon following the massive explosion in the port of Beirut. Caritas has a strong presence in Lebanon and its teams are actively helping in the ruins.

** Cardinal John today conducted the Blessing of the Wellington Sacred Heart Cathedral site and its construction workers, before work started on the $16.5 million earthquake-strengthening and refurbishing of the building, closed since 2018 pending the work.

A Wellington cathedral is to receive $8.5 million in Government funding from the "shovel ready" infrastructure fund. The Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral in Hill St, Thorndon, has been closed since 2018, and the money will go towards restoring and earthquake strengthening the building.

Radio personality Michael Kooge has been remembered as an "incredible" brother and son at his funeral in Whangarei. In a service held at St Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, sisters Michele and Megan remembered Kooge as an "incredible" and "talented" brother.

Tough calls ahead for owners of Wellington's earthquake-prone St Gerard's Monastery
Some "tough calls" might have to be made about the future of Wellington's earthquake-prone St Gerard's Monastery, city councillor Iona Pannett says. The monastery and church buildings, which sit above Oriental Bay and are heritage-listed, require an $11 million upgrade to get them up to building standards.

Abuse survivors urged to come forward
Serial sexual abusers of children in faith-based institutions have been identified by the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care and referred to police. Royal Commission chairwoman Judge Coral Shaw told the Herald it was anticipated its ongoing investigations would lead to others being named and urged survivors of abuse to come forward to help guide its focus. "If you are strong enough or brave enough and are a survivor or family of a survivor, we want to talk to you," she said.

A thief was so determined to steal a New Plymouth school's outdoor speaker that they brought their own ladder to reach it. It was one of a spate of school burglaries across the district in the last three weeks, with Moturoa School, Devon Intermediate, St Pius X School and Welbourn School all falling victim.

John Basil Meeking (commonly known by his second name) became the seventh Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, in 1987. He led the diocese, covering wider Canterbury, Westland and the Chatham Islands, for a decade. Then, in retirement, he held the title of Bishop Emeritus until his death on June 11 this year, aged 90.
