Station XV: Episode 170 — Peace and Pets, Witness and Weather

New Zealand's largest diocese has a new bishop — a worthy story to kick off a new year for The 15th Station. Pope Francis has also been busy to start 2022, speaking out against violence against women, and also encouraging couples to be generous, choosing children over pets. Looking back to 2021, it was another grim year from Catholic missionaries in some countries, with 22 killed while serving overseas. And a new report tries to assess how the weather affects church attendance, and what impact that might have on crime rates. A diverse line-up for Anna, Don, James and Gavin to tackle.

Honouring human dignity
A Christmas message from the Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, the Most Rev Michael Dooley.

2021 Ecumenical Christmas Church Service from St Anne's Catholic Church Wellington (audio, and full text with illustrations)
This ecumenical service brings together ministers and laypeople from Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Catholic, and Quaker denominations to celebrate Christmas. Music and words in English, te reo Maori, Niuean, Tongan and Fijian mark the cross-cultural nature of the event.

It's a very different Christmas day for many church-goers across Auckland (full text)
Auckland's Catholic Diocese says it has just under 200-thousand members across 68 parishes, from Thames-Coromandel to Northland. Sadly very few of them can operate today, under the red setting of the covid traffic light system. Spokeswoman Lyndsay Freer says the limit of 100 vaccinated people in one place makes it difficult to gather for worship. She says the cathedral in the heart of Auckland has up to eight-thousand people for Christmas mass, and her own parish has 16-hundred.
