Dear 'kiwicatholics',

'THE CHURCH ALIVE' CONFERENCE, TE RAPA RACECOURSE, HAMILTON 7-9 July 2000

There is some preliminary information about this conference (soon to be expanded, Anthony?) on its Web page. http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/hamilton/jubilee/index.html#churchalive

Key speakers include Cardinal Williams ("Where have we come from"); Bishop Dunn ("Where are we going"); the Anglican bishop of Waikato, Rt Rev. David Moxon ("Alpha and joint ventures"); Bishop Denis Browne ("Where we are now"); Bishop Dolan ("Evangelization"). John and Tracy Connelly of the John Paul II Bible School in Alberta, Canada have been invited to speak on "Renewal and Catholic spirituality". That's all I know at the moment. As more information goes up on the Web site, I will let you know.

'NZ CATHOLIC' June 18 2000
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/press/nzc/front.html

The stories this week feature three prominent Catholics who received Queen's Birthday honours awards. : Cardinal Williams, Sister Mary Foy of the Sisters of Mercy, and Napier's parish priest Monsignor Tim Hannigan, with photos of each of them and related links.

SCHOOLS

Christ the King School, Owairaka (south of Mt Albert in Auckland City) has just opened a fine Web site at: http://members.xoom.com/ctk_auck/

Just a reminder that Catholic Online offers free Web page hosting to any New Zealand Catholic school and other organisations and groups recognised by our bishops, and there are no banner ads over the top to spoil the view.

GREAT JUBILEE OF THE YEAR 2000
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

A few weeks ago invitations went out to Rome's homeless people to have dinner with Pope John Paul and some of the Vatican Cardinals and bishops. Reports about the dinner are on the Jubilee News page (the Associated Press report includes a photo of the event).

Jubilee events are slowing down now as Rome approaches its hottest summer months and Pope John Paul prepares to go off to the mountains for his summer vacation. So apart from the Eucharistic Congress this week, there won't be a lot of Jubilee events to report for a while. However I will open a new section on the Jubilee News page for reports on preparations for World Youth Day, August 16-18.

In that connection, I have nearly finished the first draft of a new section on the bishops' Web site for young Catholics, meaning from childhood to twenty-somethings. Before this goes public I will be asking everyone interested to give me their comments on the draft. Next week, hopefully.

Every best wish and all God's blessings, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

Unusually, there were no significant Jubilee-related events in the past week so I didn't update the Jubilee page. The most recent reports are about the Jubilees of Migrants and Travellers, and of Journalists (June 1-4) .

For the rest of this month the Jubilee events are centred on the 47th International Eucharistic Congress (18-25 June) and the major feast days: Pentecost (being celebrated as I type); the Holy Trinity (next Sunday); the Body and blood of Christ (Corpus Christi - Thursday 22 June in Rome, Sunday 25 June in NZ); Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (Thursday 29 June).

I will continue to update the Jubilee News page at least weekly as often as there are significant reports to link to.

4 June 2000

Dear 'kiwicatholics',

On the bishops' Vocations page: http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/vocations/frvocations.html you'll find a link to "Documents on the Permanent Diaconate" on the Web.

ON TV One of the forthcoming stories from 'NZC' reports that a series of broadcasts of the Mass on Prime TV has been guaranteed by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. The time is 11.30 am on Sunday morning. Prime's broadcast frequencies are on: http://www.primetv.co.nz/transmission/transmission.html I will add this link and a note about the broadcasts to the bishops' Evangelisation page in the next few days.

The Wellington TV station Channel 7 has a weekly 30-minute evening programme "Sunday on Seven", hosted by Father Peter Roe SM. It is broadcast twice on Sunday: at 5pm and 7 pm. Each programme begins with the gospel reading from that Sunday's Mass, followed by a an interview. The aim of the programme is to "discuss religious faith in a non-judgemental way" so this is not a specifically Catholic programme or an evangelizing one. It just wants to get the attention of people who have some interest in the spiritual dimension of life. This programme also need funding to continue.

THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

Jubilee of Migrants and Travellers: June 1-4: On 2 June Pope John Paul presided at a Mass for 50,000 representatives of migrants, travellers and homeless people. On their behalf the "Jubilee Charter for the Rights of Refugees" was presented to the Pope along with the Offertory gifts at the Mass in St. Peter's Square. As part of this Jubilee, a little flotilla of fishing and pleasure boats left the Israeli port of Haifa to retrace the route followed by Saint Paul (Acts 27-28). We have links to Pope John Paul's homily at the Jubilee Mass and to reports of the main events.

Jubilee of Journalists : June 1-4: Some 7,000 journalists from 52 countries arrived in Rome to participate in their Jubilee. The opening ceremony took place in the Sistine Chapel. Next day the journalists attended a conference on the challenges posed today at all levels of social communications. On Saturday, the journalists crossed the threshold of the Holy Door of St. Paul Outside the Walls as a sign of conversion and participated in an ecumenical celebration. After Mass on Sunday they will meet Pope John Paul in the Vatican Audience Hall. We have links to reports of the Jubilee events so far; to an interview on the topic of Pope John Paul's relationship with the media; and to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications' document "Ethics in Communications".

On the New Zealand Catholic Internet this week ...

THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

The Jubilee of Scientists was celebrated in Rome last week by several thousand scientists and researchers who attended a special Mass and an international congress. On the Jubilee news page you will find links to Pope John Paul's addresses to the participants on the theme of faith and reason, and to other items from the science congress.

Incidentally, we now have a New Zealand Catholic organisation devoted to the study and promotion of bioethics, the Nathaniel Centre, directed by Fr Michael McCabe. The NZ Catholic Directory lists a Web site for the Centre at http://www.nathaniel.org.nz but this is not operating yet.

EDUCATION - STUDENT SOCIETIES. CHAPLAINCIES CathSoc Otago at http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/dunedin/cathsoc is the second Catholic students' association with a full Web site, the other being CathSoc Auckland - http://www.cda.org.nz/cathsoc

And Victoria University has the second full site for a Catholic Chaplaincy - http://www.vuw.ac.nz/chaplains/kohanga.html Auckland again has the other one.

The bishops' main Education page at: http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/education/freducation.html has links to the two societies and to the Catholic chaplaincies and all other tertiary chaplaincy Web sites that I have been able to track down.

NEWS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html
On the bishops' News page you can read the letter they wrote to the Attorney-Geenral objecting to the proposal to put into one statute matters relating to marriage, de facto relationships and same-sex relationships. The proposed legislation has since been referred to a parliamentary select committee after being criticised from all parts of the political spectrum.

That's it for now. Wishing you a grace-filled week,

Dear 'kiwicatholics',

A special word of thanks to Paul Malcolm Robertson for the fine first-hand report on Catholic Schools' Day at Eden Park.

Thank you also to Jonathan Godfrey who reminded me to remind you about anti-virus security. At the Xtra virus security page -http://www.xtrasite.co.nz/help/securityvirus.html - you can read helpful tips about computer security, and review the principal types of anti-virus software available in New Zealand.

This weekend's 'NZ Catholic' newspaper includes an annual advertising feature about our New Zealand Catholic schools. One aspect of it completely baffles me.

Of the 21 high schools which have advertisements this year, 14 have Web sites describing their school's curriculum and environment in text and pictures in far more detail than it's practical to do in an advertisement. Yet only one of the 14 (Catholic Cathedral College) has included their home page address with their other contact information. This happens year after year and I cannot understand it.

I can't believe it's because of embarrassment. Our secondary school Web sites are at least comparable in their look and content to the New Zealand average, and some have gone to considerable expense to have professional-looking pages made. It's one of those questions which are difficult to ask without causing offence, and yet it screams for an answer: why establish your school on the World Wide Web and then keep quiet about it? It doesn't make sense. What's more, Web site addresses are commonplace now in advertisements for schools and everything else, so that people have come to expect them. In omitting their home page addresses, our Catholic schools risk giving a false impression that they lag behind others in their use of modern media!

I have mentioned this point today in a post to Pat McCarthty, editor of 'NZ Catholic'. What the schools put in their advertisements is of course entirely up to them, but if their home pages are being omitted just because of an oversight (affecting all 13??) then perhaps Pat might give them a gentle nudge next year.

God bless,

Mike Leon

The annual New Zealand Catholic Directory is published by Catholic Communications. It contains contact details - phone and fax numbers, street, e-mail and web site address, and principal personnel - for every parish, school, diocesan office and organisation recognised by our bishops. It is an extremely useful handbook for anyone who is active in services to the Church, and a bargain at $20 a copy plus postage. You can order copies from Catholic Communications, Pompallier Diocesan Centre, Private Bag, Ponsonby, Auckland. E-mail: cathcomm@xtra.co.nz ; fax: +64 9 360 3061 ; telephone: + 64 9 378 8017. You will receive an invoice with your order.

On the bishops' Web site we publish the 'national organisations' sections of the Directory - under the heading 'National Directory'. So far I have updated the 'Catholic Bishops of New Zealand' and 'Catholic Publishers' sections. Over the next month I'll be updating the sections for 'Seminaries and Formation Houses', 'Religious Orders', 'Chaplains' and the biggest section: 'National Offices and Organisations' (more than fifty entries).

CATHOLIC PRESS - WEL-COM
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/press/welcom/front.html

From this weekend's issue of the monthly diocesan newspaper for Wellington and Palmerston North we have a report of the Archdiocesan 150th Jubilee celebrations and Cardinal William's homily (which he didn't actually deliver, as he had the flu), plus lots of fine photos of the event. A video of the highlights; is already on sale.

The third item from Wel-com is 'Dangers for children surfing in cyberspace -and how to protect them', by Kate Mahoney, a freelance journalist and member of the Archdiocesan Family Commission. Photo of Kate, links to a number of 'safe surfing' Web sites.

NEWS OF THE GREAT JUBILEE OF THE YEAR 2000 http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

At the top of the News page is a full set of links to reports and background material on last weekend's Day of Martyrs and Witnesses. In a unique ceremony, representative of the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant churches assembled in the Colosseum in Rome to honoured their 20th-Century martyrs and witnesses to the faith in all parts of the world, including medical missionaries and victims of communism, nazism and fascism.

WORLD CATHOLIC NEWS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html

One of the frustrations of trying to keep up with world Catholic news is that the main Catholic news sources close down over the weekend. For instance, over the historic first Easter of the new millennium, all Catholic news agencies went silent for four days, which in New Zealand means from Saturday to Tuesday. The secular press carried a certain amount of coverage but finding it can be a labour.

To help overcome this problem I have added another link to the already quite extensive set of links on the bishops' News page. 'NewsNow' is a free world news Internet service in the form of links to the Web sites of (mainly, but not exclusively) UK and US newspapers and the BBC. It is updated every five minutes, so if the secular media finds anything they deem worthy of reporting - and Pope John Paul is constantly in the headlines these days -you'll find a link to the latest reports via NewsNow's 'news of religion' section.

For example there are up-to-the-minute reports of Pope John Paul's visit to Fatima, taking place as I type, including the preliminary publication of "The Third Secret of Fatima", which (not to keep you in suspense) I've summarised below. The direct link is: http://www.newsnow.co.uk/cgi/NewsNow/NewsFeed.htm?Section=NewsLink&Theme=Rel igion

*****************
FATIMA, Portugal (Reuters) - The Vatican has said the "Third Secret of Fatima" included prophecies of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul and persecution of Christians in the 20th century by communist regimes.

The Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said the third part of the secret -- the first two are already well known -- involved a vision of martyrdom and suffering, including a "bishop clothed in white" who "makes his way with great effort towards the Cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred. He too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire."

In order for the faithful to better receive the message of the Madonna, the Pope had ordered the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to "(make) public the third part of the secret, after the preparation of an appropriate commentary." Since the secret contained a "prophetic vision" similar to those in the Gospel and condensed events spread over time, it "must be interpreted in a symbolic key". There was no indication when the text and the commentary would be published.

Dear 'kiwicatholics'

Thank you very much for the first-hand reports on the Eucharistic Convention and the Easter Tri-Series weekend (photo on page 4 of this weekend's 'NZ Catholic' newspaper. On the other hand, not a word from anyone about the Wellington Archdiocesan Jubilee celebrations last weekend. If anyone did attend it's not by any means too late to write a note about it. On the other hand, Wel-com newspaper will be published in a week's time and no doubt will give the Jubilee events a good write-up.

Sorry to say I wasn't able to put up the stories from this weekend's 'NZ Catholic' newspaper before Sunday but I hope to get to them on Monday and I will write to 'kiwicatholic' as soon as they're up.

God bless,
