THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html
Sunday 9 July (Monday our time) is the 'Jubilee of the Prisons', when Pope John Paul visits Rome's Regina Coeli prison, where the prisoners rioted only a week ago. Our Jubilee News page has a substantial number of links to reports about the Jubilee and background reports on prison conditions in several countries. Other "Jubilees in the Jubilee" linked on the page are those of doctors and motorcyclists, and the Jubilee Polish Pilgrimage.

A new section for the Jubilee of Young People and World Youth Day (15-20 August) has links to two reports on the event.

Finally, a Gay Pride Festival in Rome, scheduled to coincide with the mid-point of the Jubilee celebrations, is about to conclude. The event inspired a number of articles in the Catholic press and there are links to these also on the Jubilee News page.

Dealing to the demons
It comes as something of a relief when one of the Catholic Church's unofficial exorcists looks you in the eye and finds that there is no sign of you being possessed by demons. 9 July is the 'Jubilee of the Prisons'. In advance of it, Pope John Paul has issued a message of which the general theme is that "prison should not be a corrupting experience, a place of idleness and even vice, but instead a place of redemption." There's a link to the full text on our Jubilee News page.

In the next few days I'll be opening a new section on the page for World Youth Day and the Jubilee of Young People (15-20 August) and I hope this will coincide with a new section on the bishops' Web site 'For Young Catholics'.

Finally, this is likely to be a turbulent week in Rome with all sorts of demonstrations and accusations flying about. Please remember that on our World Catholic News page - http://newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html - you can find several links to free Catholic news services, updated daily.

Before moving on to new features on the bishops' Web site I just must mention that the home page is linked to a statistical service which counts the countries to which the page is downloaded. There have been five downloads to Somebody with a Vatican Internet Account (.va).

NEWS

Thousands of members of Auckland's Catholic migrant communities gathered at the ASB Stadium on Sunday, 18 June to honour the Jubilee themes of Reconciliation and Unity. In a colourful ceremony beginning with a powhiri and followed by Mass, the migrant communities offered 'He Tautoko' (a Pledge of Support) to the Ngati Whatua and all Maori. The text of the Pledge follows the report of the event on the News page.

The Vatican will formally publish the 'Third Secret of Fatima' together with a commentary next Tuesday our time. There is interest about it in the secular news media so you will probably hear or read about on TV or radio first. Then, in the next day or two you can read the full text of the message and the commentary via the Catholic news service links on the News page.

Dear 'kiwicatholics',

'THE CHURCH ALIVE' CONFERENCE, TE RAPA RACECOURSE, HAMILTON 7-9 July 2000

There is some preliminary information about this conference (soon to be expanded, Anthony?) on its Web page. http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/hamilton/jubilee/index.html#churchalive

Key speakers include Cardinal Williams ("Where have we come from"); Bishop Dunn ("Where are we going"); the Anglican bishop of Waikato, Rt Rev. David Moxon ("Alpha and joint ventures"); Bishop Denis Browne ("Where we are now"); Bishop Dolan ("Evangelization"). John and Tracy Connelly of the John Paul II Bible School in Alberta, Canada have been invited to speak on "Renewal and Catholic spirituality". That's all I know at the moment. The stories this week feature three prominent Catholics who received Queen's Birthday honours awards. : Cardinal Williams, Sister Mary Foy of the Sisters of Mercy, and Napier's parish priest Monsignor Tim Hannigan, with photos of each of them and related links.

SCHOOLS

Christ the King School, Owairaka (south of Mt Albert in Auckland City) has just opened a fine Web site at: http://members.xoom.com/ctk_auck/

Just a reminder that Catholic Online offers free Web page hosting to any New Zealand Catholic school and other organisations and groups recognised by our bishops, and there are no banner ads over the top to spoil the view.

GREAT JUBILEE OF THE YEAR 2000
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

A few weeks ago invitations went out to Rome's homeless people to have dinner with Pope John Paul and some of the Vatican Cardinals and bishops. Reports about the dinner are on the Jubilee News page (the Associated Press report includes a photo of the event).

Jubilee events are slowing down now as Rome approaches its hottest summer months and Pope John Paul prepares to go off to the mountains for his summer vacation. So apart from the Eucharistic Congress this week, there won't be a lot of Jubilee events to report for a while. However I will open a new section on the Jubilee News page for reports on preparations for World Youth Day, August 16-18.

In that connection, I have nearly finished the first draft of a new section on the bishops' Web site for young Catholics, meaning from childhood to twenty-somethings. Before this goes public I will be asking everyone interested to give me their comments on the draft. Next week, hopefully.

Every best wish and all God's blessings, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

Unusually, there were no significant Jubilee-related events in the past week so I didn't update the Jubilee page. The most recent reports are about the Jubilees of Migrants and Travellers, and of Journalists (June 1-4) .

For the rest of this month the Jubilee events are centred on the 47th International Eucharistic Congress (18-25 June) and the major feast days: Pentecost (being celebrated as I type); the Holy Trinity (next Sunday); the Body and blood of Christ (Corpus Christi - Thursday 22 June in Rome, Sunday 25 June in NZ); Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (Thursday 29 June).

I will continue to update the Jubilee News page at least weekly as often as there are significant reports to link to.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC DIRECTORY 2000

I have finished updating the "Seminaries and Formation Houses" section. The page link is: http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/directory/direct4.html
