May almighty God bless us on this day
when his only Son ascended into heaven to prepare a place for us.

After his resurrection, Christ was seen by his disciples.
When he appears as judge, may we be pleasing forever in his sight.

We believe that Jesus has taken his seat in majesty at the right hand of
the Father.
May we have the joy of experiencing that he is also with us to the end
of time.

May almighty God bless us, the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Dear friends,

A couple of weeks ago New Zealand's Catholic bishops concluded one of
their regular meetings and I contacted the Bishops Conference Executive
Officer, Terence Oliver, to ask for a few details to send to our forum.
Better late than never, I have received a summary of the more
interesting decisions made at the meeting (see below), and I am hopeful
that having established a precedent, I may be able to do the same in
future a bit closer to the event.

The meeting in Rome of nearly all the world's cardinals ended last
Friday our time. In the Thursday bulletin of the Catholic news agency
Zenit, there are a number of items giving a useful overview of the
event: http://zenit.org/english/archive/0105/ZE010524.htm

This Weekend's Tablet has a somewhat more critical view:

'Comprehensive churchgoing survey '
Otago Daily Times 21 May 2001
Sydney: New Zealand churchgoers yesterday took part in the largest and
most comprehensive survey of church life in the world. The 2001 National
Church Life Survey will research church attitudes, beliefs and practices
in 17,300 congregations in Australia, the United States, England and New
Zealand. Congregation members from 18 denominations in the four
countries were asked to complete the written survey forms yesterday and
for the rest of this week. Chair of the international steering
committee, the Rev Dean Drayton, said the survey aimed to provide a
unique snapshot of the churches at the start of the new millennium.
"This project is unprecedented in its size and scope," Dr Drayton said
in a statement. "For the first time we will be able to compare four
countries in detail, using the largest database in church life in the
world." Dr Drayton said participants would receive reports of their own
results through their congregation but results would also be available
on an interactive web site - http://www.ncls.org.au/

'Universities' role of interest to church '
The Southland Times 26 May 2001
http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,806023a1943,FF.html
It is unlikely the ongoing argument about university councils has
attracted much attention in church circles, Invercargill First
Presbyterian Church minister, the Rev Simon Rae says in Religion and
Life. However, the issue is important and religious bodies do have an
interest in supporting the role of the universities in our society....

Dear friends,

"A peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you" (John 14:27)

It seems a peace the world cannot give - a miracle of grace - is the
only thing that is going to bring peace to Jesus' Homeland, where two
communities live in fear and anger in the same house, so to speak.
Please keep the tormented people of the Holy Land in your daily prayers
and if possible have prayers for peace included in the Prayers of the
Faithful at Mass.

Over the next four days the College of Cardinals (including Cardinal Tom
Williams I assume) will be meeting in Rome. According to the Italian
press, they have a seven point agenda to discuss:
* how best to convey the message of Christ in a world of religious
pluralism;
* whether the Church is projecting holiness "in all its evangelical
radicality";
* how to defend the Church and the "originality of its sacraments" in
the face of New Age sects offering an alternative spirituality;
* how to tackle world poverty and globalisation;
* whether there is a discrepancy between the views of ordinary Catholics
on sexual and family matters and prevailing Catholic doctrine;
* how the world's mass media can be better used to convey Christian
values;
* and how church bodies such as the Curia (the Vatican bureaucracy) and
the Synod of Bishops could be "made to function better".

A tall order for a four-day meeting, and when the Cardinals return to
their own countries they are just one bishop among others. However
everyone present at the consistory will be aware that one of their
number will most likely be Pope John Paul's successor, so each of the
Cardinals will have an opportunity to "size up" their colleagues
intellectually and spiritually.

You can read daily reports about the cardinals' assembly via the links
to the Catholic and secular press on our bishops' News page:

I have a huge amount of respect, reverence even, for Pope John Paul II.
Whether, as the Catholic Church tells me, he is the Vicar of Christ on
Earth, I'll leave to the dogmatists, but he has shown time and time
again that he is chosen of God, for he has always had about him a
Christlikeness and the older he gets the more Christlike he
becomes........

Dear friends,

You might remember an item in 'News and Notes' a couple of weeks ago about our bishops' meeting in Christchurch. A press report said that they might discuss a proposal by the Catholic Church in England and Wales to have all seminary candidates vetted by the police. Last week I spoke to Terence Oliver, the Executive Officer for the NZ Catholic Bishops' Conference. He told me that the bishops had discussed routine administrative matters and the British plan didn't come up.

A number of our members mentioned EWTN this week. That's the US-based international Catholic television and radio broadcasting network. Quite apart from any re-broadcasts of EWTN on local TV channels, you can watch the EWTN TV programme live on its Web site and listen to its international radio broadcast there too. The link is: http://www.ewtn.com/audiovideo/index.htm

In a media release, the bioethics agency of the NZ Catholic Bishops? Conference (The Nathaniel Centre ) welcomes the government's intention to call for new draft legislation on the use of genetic biotechnologies. Full text at: http://catholic.org.nz/cathcom/news/news.html#art

Editorial - 'Signs of the Spirit' Australians and New Zealanders are justly proud of our missionaries. They are the men and women who have given themselves to spreading the Gospel "to the ends of the earth." Their effort, seen in purely human terms, is admirable but limited and even sometimes ambiguous. Through the eyes of faith we perceive the action of the Holy Spirit in their lives and work and all of us are touched by it......

'Defender of the exploited' The author, Hank Zyp, and his wife Tillie have known Fr Shay Cullen for about 25 years and have worked with him on some development projects. They admire him as a friend who is committed to doing everything possible to improve the lives of the poor and especially to save children from exploitation. In this account they give us a glimpse into the life of a missionary who was horrified at what he saw around him and dedicated himself to doing something about it.......

'The Aetas? journey' When Mt Pinatubo erupted in June 1991, the indigenous people, the Aetas, who lived on its slopes lost their homeland to the lahar that covered the whole region. The volcanic ash destroyed everything and made the area uninhabitable. The Aetas have been struggling since then to find land to cultivate and establish a future for themselves. Many Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and Church bodies have been helping them to establish their rights and to take charge of their lives.....

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST PAUL: Papal Pilgrimage 2001

So far so good. Pope John Paul's visit to Athens took place in a far
better atmosphere than many dared to hope. Now John Paul is in Syria (
inspiring the Syrian tourism ministry to publish a poster reading: "Have
a vision! Take the road to Damascus!!") My impression is that in Syria
Latin and Greek Catholics are a minority within a minority but all
reports say the same thing: all Syrian Christians regard the Pope as
their representative to the Moslem majority; they can't afford
denominational strife. Consequently the Orthodox community will also
welcome him warmly. The Syrian part of the pilgrimage will be quite long
- four days altogether and then the Pope is off to the Catholic island
nation of Malta.

You can follow the pilgrimage on the bishops News page -

Dear friends,

If you attended this weekend's Jesus 4 Real camp in Wellington or the
Eucharistic Convention in Auckland, it would be great if you could send
us your impressions.

Continuing the update of the National Catholic directory pages at
http://catholic.org/nz/cathcom/directory/frdirectory.html - I have
completed the Religious Orders section. There are about 45 orders with a
presence in New Zealand or at least an Australian/New Zealand province.
The most remarkable change on this page since last year is the number of
Web page links.

Quite a few religious orders have taken advantage of an Australian
vocations site which offers them a page each on which to describe their
special character. In other cases the international centre - or 'mother
house' - for a particular religious order had made space available on
its Web site for the order's New Zealand members. Finally, a few New
Zealand congregations have chosen to operate their own Web sites
independently. Together with the New Zealand contact information in the
directory, these linked pages generally give an abundance of useful
information about each congregation.

I hope and expect that all the other NZ Catholic dioceses, schools,
parishes, laypeople's organizations and companies will eventually come
'online' in one of these three ways creating "a virtual Church", an
online "mirror" of the actual Church. This will never be a substitute
for the real Church, but it does offer the priceless advantage that
people who are curious about the Catholic faith, but who don't dare
approach a Catholic person or organisation for fear of the imagined
consequences, can become familiar with the life of our Church in a
non-scary way and discover what we have to offer them in their
particular situation.

Next week's update will be of 'National Organizations' (chiefly of lay
people).

God bless,
Mike Leon

The following stories from this weekend's 'NZ Catholic' will appear on
its Web site in a day or two:

'Dispute over Futuna future'
Wellington - The former Futuna Retreat Centre in Karori, once an oasis
of peace, prayer and fellowship, has become a focus of local discontent.
Its new owner, developer Eyal Aharoni of Prime Property Group, says he
plans to build a retirement village of more than 70 units with carports
on the site .......

'Genetic work threatens thinking about 'human''
Increasing genetic intervention is going to change our understanding of
what it means to be human, says Marist priest Fr Neil Vaney SM. Fr
Vaney, a lecturer at Good Shepherd College - Te Hepara Pai - in
Auckland, talked of developments in the field of genetic technology in a
Catholic Family Life Education seminar last month .......

'Milestone gained in Auckland's pastoral planning'
The process of pastoral planning for the future of Auckland diocese
reached a milestone this month when three North Shore parishes came
together to present their area proposal to Bishop Pat Dunn. Beachhaven,
Glenfield and Northcote parishes - which expect to have only two priests
between them by the year 2006 - have decided to begin working together
as a pastoral area wherever possible ............

'School celebrates Passover with feast' (photo)
The Press (Christchurch) 07 April 2001
http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,738097a1934,FF.html
Angus Vincent, five, is no novice when it comes to good food – his
parents are restaurateurs, and at St Albans Catholic School yesterday he
had no trouble tucking into a feast prepared by his schoolmates. The
whole school of 49, plus three teachers, celebrated the Passover with a
traditional feast of unleavened bread and lamb, and dressed in biblical
costumes cobbled from bath and tea towels. The Passover festival
commemorates the liberation of the ancient Israelites from Egyptian
bondage.

Dear friends,

"His state was divine, yet he did not cling to his equality with God but
emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as men
are; and being as all men are he was humbler yet, even to accepting
death, death on a cross.

"But God raised him high and gave him the name which is above all other
names so that all beings in the heavens, on the earth and in the
underworld should bend the knee at the name of JESUS and every tongue
should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord ..."

EASTER IN JERUSALEM AND ROME

Paul: Thank you very much for sending the account of the miracle of the
Holy Fire at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. I hadn't heard of it
either. The Catholic Encylopedia article on the Holy Sepulchre just
mentions the cermony in passing with no hint of a miracle incolved (
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07425a.htm )

At the following Web site -
http://198.62.75.1/www1/ofm/easter/Reform.html - you can read about and
see pictures of the Service of Light at the Holy Sepulchre, the first
part of the standard Catholic Easter Saturday liturgy, but in Jerusalem
it's held on Easter Saturday morning (I suppose in order not to conflict
with the Orthodox liturgy later on the same day).

A virtual tour of the Holy Sepulchre begins here:

On our bishops' News page at
http://catholic.org.nz/cathcom/news/frnews.html you can open links to
reports of the Easter celebrations in Rome and Jerusalem from the
Catholic and secular news services.

Some years ago in Wellington, I was in a room where three reporters were

put their stories together. There was agreement that you must, in the
first few lines, not only capture the interest of the reader, but sum up
what the whole story is about...
