Dear friends,

I have re-made the Overseas Catholic Press page on the bishops Website.
The direct link is:
http://www.catholic.org.nz/cathcom/press/overseas.html The page has
direct links to three Catholic weeklies - L'Osservatore Romano's English
edition (Vatican), National Catholic Reporter (U.S.) and The Tablet
(U.K.). I have replaced the other links that were formerly on this page
with links to four directories of Catholic periodicals in the United
States, Australia, and worldwide. The latter directory lists 1200
catholic periodicals, the most extensive online list I have been able to
find. Unfortunately it doesn't include many of the publications'
Websites, but on the revamped page I have explained how you can search
for a particular Website, and I'm always happy to respond if anyone asks
me to locate a Catholic site.

The changes reduce one of the major headaches of managing a Website: the
fact that links to other sites are constantly changing or disappearing.
The more links you have the more time you have to spend checking them to
see if they still work! By linking to a few directories instead of lots
of individual sites, I can simplify the task of keeping the bishops'
pages up-to-date while making available a much wider selection of
Catholic reading on the Internet. I wish you many hours of rewarding
reading.

'Auckland cathedral to get major renovations '
Conservation and renovation of St Patrick's Cathedral and surrounding
church property planned to begin next July will be a major project. The
most dramatic change proposed for the outside of the Auckland cathedral
is a new annex on its northern side. It will include reception area and
offices, social space for the congregation, a choir practice room and
storage. A major interior change will be the placement of the tabernacle
in the middle of the cathedral's back wall and a suspended crucifix
above the altar. ....

For Sister Marie Gabrielle the point of tramping wasn't so much getting
where you were going as what you did along the way. The Duke of
Edinburgh Award excursions into the countryside she led for years were
like outdoor botany classes for her students at Lower Hutt's Sacred
Heart College. She encouraged them to appreciate nature by helping them
identify the region's plant and wildlife but always with the proviso
that they had fun.......

Professor Kevin Lee was known in Christchurch as a man of wit, warmth,
and wisdom. He was known internationally as a scholar and held in high
regard for his research, writing, and teaching in classics. He was a
staunch Catholic who took leadership roles on many church groups,
including the board of Rochester and Rutherford Halls and the Board of
Trustees of St Bede's College, and was an adviser to the Catholic Bishop
of Christchurch. He also did a great amount of quiet work for social
justice organisations...........

Canterbury, but they have been withdrawing from Catholic schools. Next
year they leave St Bedes, writes Mike Crean. Leaving will be a wrench
for Fr Kevin Manning, who came to St Bede's in 1959. Apart from four
years in Timaru and two in the United States, he has been there ever
since. He retired from teaching 10 years ago..........

'New Zealander probes Holland's low rate of abortion'
As last year's abortion total of 16,103 - the highest ever - was
released last month, pro-life campaigner Marilyn Pryor launched her new
book 'Abortion in the Netherlands'. Her study of why Holland's abortion
rate is the lowest in the Western world was launched at a public meeting
in Gore, one of half a dozen meetings the former national president of
the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child addressed throughout
Southland......

'Historic convent destroyed but nuns escape unharmed'
The historic Sacred Heart convent and chapel in Napier are unlikely to
be rebuilt after being destroyed in an inferno on June 30. A neighbour
saw smoke coming from the convent shortly before midday and raised the
alarm. Four nuns escaped and dozens of firefighters brought the blaze
under control, but not before the convent, chapel and two cars parked
nearby had been lost, and the old part of the Sacred Heart College
hostel, used by 6th and 7th form girls, had been damaged........

'Pompallier may heal old rifts on return '
A journey of healing and reconciliation may follow the return from
France next year of the remains of New Zealand's first Catholic bishop.
On July 1 the Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Pat Dunn, announced in a
pastoral letter that the remains of Bishop Jean Baptiste Pompallier
would return on January 13 next year, 163 years to the day after Bishop
Pompallier celebrated the first Mass on New Zealand soil....

'Nuns grateful '

The four Catholic sisters who lost everything in Saturday's devastating
Sacred Heart College fire in Hastings say they have been overwhelmed by
people's generosity. Their two-storey home, the 110- year-old Sisters of
Our Lady of the Mission Convent, was reduced to a pile of charcoal in
the fire which also destroyed the college's chapel and severely damaged
the college hostel.

Catholic primary schools throughout New Zealand have held mufti days to
raise money for religious education in the Solomon Islands. Last year
Catholic primary principals decided to set aside one day each year to
raise funds for children in crisis. Fighting between Solomon Island
groups displaced 40,000 people from their homes before a peace agreement
was signed last September.

Mass last week. There were 650 copies and there are none left. This is

Did any 'kiwicath' member attend the Mercy Healthcare conference, just
ended? If so, could you could write us a couple of lines about it
please..

Pope John Paul has begun his visit to the Ukraine where he will beatify
the Catholic martyrs of the Nazi occupation during World War II and of
the Communist era which followed it. Under Communism, the Greek Catholic
Church was supressed, but continued to exist underground until the end
of the Soviet era. During his visit the Pope will celebrate Mass several
times according to the Latin (Roman Catholic) rite and the Byzantine
(Greek Catholic) rite. The Catholics of the Ukraine are overjoyed at the
visit, but it is also a controversial one because the principal
Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in communion with the Moscow patriarchate,
regards the visit by the Pope as an invasion of its territory.

'Miraculous Transformation in Christian-Jewish Relationships'
Growing up in New Zealand today, it is difficult to appreciate how deep

years, and especially over the last thirty years, has been nothing short

'Marian Mothers celebrate 20 years'
Celebrating the past but looking to the future was the mood when a group
of former and current Marian Mothers
gathered at St Teresa's Church in Karori on Anzac Day to celebrate 20
years since the movement first began. The current coordinator, Fr John
Craddock sm, marked the occasion by announcing a new outreach to women
in the Wellington area and plans to ensure the movement would match the

relocated by the Diocese over the next 12 months or more and the Council
will undertake significant remedial work in order to protect access,
