There have been two recent articles in the UK newspaper The Times on the morality of making war on Iraq. Cardinal Murphy O'Connor, quoting the Catechism of the Catholic Church, argues that the war would be unjust because it would be paid for in part from funds that would otherwise be used to relieve world poverty. In response, an editorial in The Times claims that a war to overthrow tyranny is a just war according to the definition of St Thomas Aquinas.

The Tudor Consort/Peter Walls. "Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocibus" http://www.smokecds.com/index.cfm?layout=showcd&id=29788 "Peter Philips stands with William Byrd as one of the great religious composers of the Counter Reformation. The music of these two English Catholics is unsurpassed in sophistication and interest. The motets on this recording are taken from the five-part "Cantiones Sacrae" which were published in 1612. Philips adopted a wide range of musical devices to illustrate these texts musically, from suave counterpoint to precise word or image painting and homophonic declamation. These are extremely beautiful, emotionally charged settings that are strongly related to catholic spirituality. The Tudor Consort is a specialist early music choir based in Wellington, and their performances of this music, under conductor Peter Walls are simply first class." The Website of St Mary's Parish, Papakura has opened at http://catholicpapakura.org.nz It was designed by 'kiwicath' forum member Julian Waters. Among its features is the weekly parish bulletin. It illustrates how - be it ever so humble - the weekly bulletin is not at all too insignificant to publish on a Website; on the contrary, it fulfils several useful roles. It provides ready-made fresh content for the site so that visitors have a reason to keep coming back. It is a window on the life of the parish for anyone weighing up whether to join, and it provides names and contact numbers so they can do so in a non-scary way.

WORLD CATHOLIC NEWS

In August - mid-summer in Europe - the main European-based Catholic News agencies close down for about a month. Zenit, Fides and the Vatican Information Service (VIS) fall silent at this time.

The only exception that I know of is MISNA ( http://www.misna.org/eng/default.htm ) which chiefly reports political and economic news form the underdeveloped world. The Website of the UK paper The Tablet continues to publish a weekly news digest as usual and in the U.S. the daily EWTN service is uninterrupted, though a bit short on fresh news as a large part of its content come form the European services. WORLD CATHOLIC NEWS

In August - mid-summer in Europe - the main European-based Catholic News
agencies close down for about a month. Zenit, Fides and the Vatican
Information Service (VIS) fall silent at this time.

The only exception that I know of is MISNA (
http://www.misna.org/eng/default.htm ) which chiefly reports political
and economic news form the underdeveloped world. The Website of the UK
paper The Tablet continues to publish a weekly news digest as usual and
in the U.S. the daily EWTN service is uninterrupted, though a bit short
on fresh news as a large part of its content come form the European
services. There are links to both The Tablet and EWTN on the bishops'
Website: http://www.catholic.org.nz and click 'News'.
