NZ Pays Tribute To Pope NewstalkZB News 16/10/2003 (full text) The head of the Catholic Church in New Zealand has paid tribute to Pope John Paul II, who today celebrates 25 years as Pope. Around 200 people met in Wellington's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart for a Mass celebrating the Pope's anniversary. The Mass was led by Cardinal Thomas Williams and was also attended by the Pope's representative in New Zealand, Archbishop Coveney. Cardinal Williams told the congregation that, despite his physical frailty, the Pope still showed significant intellectual and spiritual prowess. He said that the Pope's early years as a forced labourer, his poetry writing and his stint as a University lecturer all shaped the leader he has become. He also paid tribute to the Pope's initiation of gatherings for young Catholics from around the world.

National Church Life Survey (Australia). "Why People Don't Go to Church" (book review) http://www.media.anglican.com.au/culture/2003/book/dont_go_church.html The question 'Why don't people go to church?' is one that probably all of us in ministry ask ourselves on a fairly regular basis. After all, don't we put considerable effort into running wonderful and inspiring worship services? So, let's face it, most of us have a vested interest in knowing why more people aren't packing into our pews on a Sunday. This book sheds considerable light on the issue ...

Cardinal's secretary backs Ratzinger "bad way" assessment CathNews (full text) Following Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's widely reported comment that Pope John Paul II is "in a bad way", the Cardinal's private secretary Georg Gaenswein said yesterday that [the Pope] could not walk or stand. "He is a hero for the faithful," Mr Gaenswein said. "The fact he doesn't give up despite his illness makes him even more credible ... When he is no longer allowed to travel, then dear God will come for him." Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna, one of Europe's most respected cardinals, added his voice to the negative reports on the Pope's health by suggesting that Pope John Paul II is nearing "the last days and months of his life". "The entire world is experiencing a Pope who is sick, who is disabled and who is dying, - I don't know how near death he is - who is approaching the last days and months of his life," Schoenborn told the Austrian state broadcaster ORF. Schoenborn is considered a possible candidate for the papacy. His spokesman, Erich Leitenberger, later said that the comments were "to be interpreted philosophically".

Marist Champagnat Family Newsletter. Spring Edition 2003

http://www.maristbrothers.org.nz/MFN1Spring2003

For those who have attended Marist Brothers¹ Schools this is well worth reading in full.

Marist Charism Last year the Brothers started investigating a lay partnership. This makes for very interesting reading and a wonderful way to be more inclusive in the Marist ministry. A committee has been formed and initial reactions are very encouraging. Please pray that this initiative may bring many blessings through the understanding and growth of the charism of Marcellin in our country.

The Human Face of Mary - a very beautiful reflection.

Golf Ball Story of Life - about setting priorities.

Young Adult Happenings! - nationwide report.

Computer Prayer (This I especially enjoyed) God was at his computer. Suddenly, he had a great idea. Every person would receive a personal e-mail! The angels got onto the job and e-mailed everyone. Then God met with the angels to discuss how it was going. 'What has been the main response from my children?' he asked. The angels were strangely silent. Eventually, one of them spoke up. "Lord, when we contacted them, the most common computer function had been DELETE".'

Let's Talk About ......SEX. This has been one of the most talked about topics in the Kohanga (Catholic Tertiary Chaplaincy) lounge this year! Why? Well, it might have something to do with the fact that three out of the four chaplains, have become involved in a programme for teenagers called Postponing Sexual Involvement (PSI).

"Sancta Maria College is named after the mission schooner Sancta Maria on which Bishop Jean Baptiste Pompallier sailed around New Zealand. The College’s name commemorates the historic arrival and work of Bishop Pompallier. There is a comparison between the vessel Sancta Maria being used to spread the Word and our College being a vessel for furthering the Religious Education of young people in our area. It also links the College with the ships and the sea which are so much a feature of our city." Sancta Maria College will open in February 2004, beginning with classes at Years 7, 8 and 9 levels and will continue to grow a new level each year until 2008 when it will offer full schooling from Years 7 to 13.

POPE JOHN PAUL IN SLOVAKIA

This weekend Pope John Paul is visiting Slovakia, former Czechoslovakia's "other half" and the neighbour of the Pope's homeland Poland, across the Tatra mountains.

Especially in the early years of the Cold War era (1945-1983) the church was subjected to a brutal campaign of repression, with the imprisonment of many clergy and religious and harassment and discrimination against active lay Catholics, while an underground Church was formed to minister to the faithful. during his visit, the Pope He will canonise two martyrs of the persecution - a bishop and a nun - who died as a consequence of their treatment. In his public addresses he is encouraging the Catholics of Slovakia to celebrate and give thanks for their faith in country which, together with the Czech Republic, has the lowest number of declared Christians in Europe.

Book reviews: 'Good for the Soul: Remembering how to confess', by Frederica Mathewes-Green 'Lord, Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession', by Scott Hahn 'How to Go to Confession When You Don't Know How', by Ann M.S. LeBlanc Christianity Today September 2003 http://www.christianitytoday.com/bc/2003/005/6.28.html Summary: Two new books by Catholic authors attempt make the case for regular sacramental confession. Scott Hahn, one of the best-known contemporary evangelical converts to Catholicism, builds Lord Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession on a foundation of Scripture and Tradition. It's a work of firm and orderly persuasion, calling Catholics back to a sacrament that has become astonishingly neglected. Ann M. S. LeBlanc's short book, How to Go to Confession When You Don't Know How, is lively and inviting, often funny, and on occasion quite beautiful. LeBlanc has in mind a select audience: Catholics who desire something more personal than what is expected during that posted half-hour...

The Irish Catholic 03-09-03 http://www.irishcatholic.ie/030903-f1.htm Summary: Commentators often don't want to acknowledge that it is primarily women who have been at the forefront of increased lay participation and visibility, and that the decline in religious observance has been steepest amongst men. Some studies would suggest that women make up between 60 and 70 per cent of the Church-going population in the affluent West and the figure for female involvement in prayer groups and parish ministry is probably higher. This female participation is wonderful, but the question remains: where are all the men?...

'Finding Nemo' and the Triune God Dominican Life http://www.domlife.org/2003/findingnemo.html Finding an account of the love between a father and son remains one of the most difficult tasks possible in Western culture. Tens of thousands of stories detail the relationship between fathers and sons as a desperate, often deadly, struggle. Since Christian understanding takes the love between father and son as one of its basic expressions for the reality of God, a film such as 'Finding Nemo' becomes far more than run-of-the-mill children's fare. It stands against the mainstream traditions of Western narrative, and forces us to ask how this cultural lacuna impacts our capacity to understand the Triune God....
