NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE
"Annual New Zealand Catholic Directory to lift its price " (media statement - full text)
The 2004 edition of the New Zealand Catholic Directory will be released towards the end of February.
Lyndsay Freer, Director of Catholic Communciations, the publishers of the directory, said that each year its contents have expanded, largely because of the increasing numbers of email addresses, cellphone numbers and websites.
This year is no exception, and the publishers have been obliged to add a further 20-odd pages to accommodate the extra data. Enlarged content and higher printing costs have forced Catholic Communications reluctantly to increase the price from $20, at which it has remained for some years, to $25 per copy.
The publishing of a national directory of the Catholic Church was the brainchild of Father John Griffin, a Columban priest, who in 1974 was appointed National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. He realised at once his need to collaborate with all the local clergy, but who were they, and where were they?
So Father Griffin began work on a clergy directory, and shortly thereafter was assisted by Fr John Coleman the first National Director of Catholic Communications.
Since then it has been expanded to contain virtually all relevant information about the personnel and agencies of the Church in Aotearoa-New Zealand.

For three years he worked in the parish of Chalamont, but feeling the call to overseas missionary work joined the Society of Mary (Marists) in Lyons in 1837. After making his profession in 1840 he was assigned to New Zealand, where he arrived with 10 other members of the society on the Mary Grey at the Bay of Islands on 14 June 1841.
