Bishop to meet pope (full text) Otago Daily Times 7-September 2004 The Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, the Most Rev Colin Campbell, will meet Pope John Paul II in Rome. Bishop Campbell, who was appointed to the Dunedin diocese earlier this year, flies out of New Zealand today for Rome. He is part of a contingent of New Zealand bishops which make a five-yearly "ad limana" visit to Rome to report on the state of their dioceses. "It is my first visit to Rome in this capacity. There is a sense of anticipation and expectancy." The New Zealand bishops will meet the Pope as a group and individually. At the individual meeting, Bishop Campbell will give an overview of the church's operations in Otago and Southland. The bishops will also visit different congregations in Rome. "It will be a fairly busy week."

Brother's identity revealed (full text) Otago Daily Times Saturday, 28-August 2004 Wellington: The identity of a retired Catholic Brother accused of indecencies against a school pupil 20 years ago was revealed yesterday in the Upper Hutt District Court. Andrew Cody (67), who lives in Upper Hutt, is charged with committing six acts of indecency against a 15-year-old boy at Hato Paora Maori boys' Catholic school at Feilding in 1984. When he made his second appearance in court yesterday. his lawyer, Paul Surridge, did not seek continued name suppression. Cody was accompanied in court by two members of a support group, one a member of his local church. Police were called after a man made threats against Cody outside the court. The case was remanded until October 1 for police to gather further information, including from a man based in Australia. Cody is on bail, with the conditions he does not accompany a person under 17 without adult supervision, or try to contact the complainant. Police said the complainant came forward late last year. - NZPA

Cardinal expresses sympathy to Jewish community (full text)
The Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, Cardinal Thomas Williams, has written to the Jewish community in Wellington expressing his deep sadness at the desecration of the graves in the Jewish section of the Bolton Street and Makara cemeteries. The Cardinal described the vandalism as shameful and atrocious, and on behalf of the Catholic people of the Wellington Archdiocese expressed profound sympathy to those who have family members buried in the two cemeteries as well as to the Jewish community as a whole. Many Catholic churches around the country offered prayers at weekend Masses for those Jewish families who had been affected by the desecration of the graves and the burning of the prayer chapel.

Cardinal expresses sympathy to Jewish community (full text)
The Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, Cardinal Thomas Williams, has written to the Jewish community in Wellington expressing his deep sadness at the desecration of the graves in the Jewish section of the Bolton Street and Makara cemeteries. The Cardinal described the vandalism as shameful and atrocious, and on behalf of the Catholic people of the Wellington Archdiocese expressed profound sympathy to those who have family members buried in the two cemeteries as well as to the Jewish community as a whole. Many Catholic churches around the country offered prayers at weekend Masses for those Jewish families who had been affected by the desecration of the graves and the burning of the prayer chapel.
