Benedict, a name that is a plan for Europe's reconciliation and renaissance
http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=3152
[At his first general audience the new pope explained his reasons for
choosing the name Benedict. The first reason referred to Benedict XV, the
pope of the First World War, a "courageous and true prophet of peace". The
second reason for the name Benedict lies in Saint Benedict of Norcia, the
"Patriarch of western monasticism" ... "He is a fundamental point of
reference for the unity of Europe and the inherent Christian roots of its
culture and civilisation"]

"Not a transitional pope: Benedict may surprise"
An in-depth analysis by the National Catholic Reporter's full-time Vatican

Poles have embraced Bavarian-born Benedict with noticeably more warmth than
his fellow Germans, urging him to visit and commenting favorably on his
devotion to John Paul during his years as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the
Vatican's guardian of doctrinal orthodoxy....

At a public meeting last evening more than 100 people turned out to hear Dr

give parents more choice, as well as allowing the popular schools to grow as
demand warranted. Taking the 5 per cent cap off integrated schools, usually
Catholic, to allow more non-Catholic pupils to attend was also high on his
agenda....

Anglican rebel looks for Vatican pact

When the newly installed Pope Benedict XVI presaged ecumenical unity with
carefully directed nods to other religious faiths, Archbishop John Hepworth
realised that a long journey may soon be over. The global primate of the
Traditional Anglican Communion, a conservative offshoot of the US Episcopal
Church, has fostered ties with Rome, and with the new Pope, that could see
his Anglican splinter group fulfil its vision "to be an Anglican Church in
communion with the Bishop of Rome"....

The Breaking Of Bread. Christ at Emmaus is nearly everybody's favourite
Easter story (full text)
The disciples "recognised Jesus in the breaking of bread", and as Richard
Dowden notes in his article on Eucharist, the phrase 'breaking of bread'
became the early Christian shorthand for the ceremony of Eucharist. That
phrase reminds us how closely the first believers associated their
eucharistic gatherings with faith in Christ Risen. Easter had changed their
lives for ever: it changed the likes of Peter and John from craven cowards
into courageous leaders....

Thousands hold vigil for Pope
http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/default.asp?id=49058
Tens of thousands of people are holding vigil for the Pope in St Peter's
Square. New Zealand Catholic Communications Director Lyndsay Freer is
amongst them and says despite his extremely poor health, the Pope has been
able to approve a new papal ambassador to New Zealand. Archbishop of
Wellington John Dew says parishioners in New Zealand are being asked to pray
extra hard for the Pope. He says special prayer vigils will be held at
churches around the country tonight.

The Pope's worsening condition is weighing heavily on the minds of the
nearly half-a-million catholics in New Zealand. Special mention was made of
the Pope at lunchtime masses across the country. The former Archbishop of
Wellington, Cardinal Tom Williams, says he will fly immediately to Rome if
the Pope dies to take part in selecting the new head of the Catholic
Church....

THE NATHANIEL REPORT

Issue fourteen ...

Editorial: Abortion - Technology and Truth (full text)
One in four pregnancies in New Zealand now end in abortion, compared with
one in ten two decades ago. The reasons are complex and need to be examined
within the context of some very significant demographic and sociological
changes. A focus on changing the law would, by itself, be an inadequate
approach to dealing with the increasing abortion rate....

Also in this issue ...

Update on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (HART) Bill
This piece identifies changes to the HART Bill recommended by the Health
Select Committee as the Bill enters the House to be debated by the Committee
of the Whole House. It also highlights those matters which, from a Catholic
perspective, are of 'grave concern'.

Clinical - Ethical Judgements without "short cuts"
This article by Australian moral theologian Gerald Gleeson explores the
debate among Catholic ethicists regarding the obligations towards
persistently unresponsive (PVS) patients and identifies two "short cuts"
that are commonly deployed in this debate.

Aged Health Care and Ethical Business Practice
A reflection by a practitioner in the field of leadership development and
management assessment, this article sets out three theories of leadership
behaviour which form the background to a series of questions designed to
stimulate those involved in aged care to reflect on the ethical nature of
their own behaviour.

A time to celebrate
Otago Daily Times

Most Poles are Catholic and on Good Friday processions would be held at each church to take the statue of Jesus from the altar and place it in a tomb. The church would be in darkness until the service early on Sunday morning when the statue would be brought back from the tomb and placed on the altar. After Mass, everyone would spread the good news, telling everyone they met "He is risen" ....

Mikaele Laufiso, secretary of the Samoan Advisory Council of Chiefs, is Catholic and the 40 days of Lent which lead up to Easter are days of fasting and prayer, especially on Fridays. Then, after church on Easter Sunday, the family or a church group will get together for a feast....

Particularly if we distinguish, as we should, between what we might choose to profess when we are presented with a stickybeak census form, and how we really do live our lives....
To most of us Easter means an extra long weekend, chocolate eggs and rabbits, but its roots go back a long way. Charmian Smith looks at the ancient origins of this festival. http://www.odt.co.nz/Repository/ml.asp?Ref=T0RULzIwMDUvMDMvMjMjQXIwMTkwMA==&Mode\ =HTML&Locale=english-skin-custom
