Maori better off now than 20 years ago - Treaty educator
An educator in the Treaty of Waitangi is optimistic about the state of Maori
in this country, saying that Maori are much more visible than they were 20
years ago. Robert Consedine's optimism comes from the fact that in almost 20
years of running treaty workshops 95 percent of evaluations said such
workshops should be compulsory for all New Zealanders....

Every child counts
A new coalition of organisations working to have children placed at the
centre of public policy development has been launched. The Every Child
Counts campaign is drawing together research and statistics on children's
welfare in New Zealand. It is not a pretty sight. Sr Marcellin Wilson of
Caritas says New Zealand's child poverty and abuse rates, in a country which
has always prided itself as a good place to bring up children, are crimes
against humanity....

No relief in the Budget for children
The government's Budget, delivered last month, shows no mercy for the
families with children suffering from poverty-related illnesses such as
meningococcal disease. This is the view of Auckland paediatrician, Innes
Asher, speaking to the Child Poverty Action Group at a Budget breakfast on
20 May, the day the Budget was delivered...

Wel-com appoints a theology graduate as its new editor
The Wellington Archdiocese has appointed Cecily McNeill as the editor of its
monthly newspaper, Wel-com. Cecily graduated from Australian Catholic
University last year with a Master of Arts degree, in theology which she had
studied over the previous two years...

Protest vigil in support of Palestinians
On the eve of 14 May a candlelit vigil in Wellington's Civic Square picketed
celebrations marking the establishment of the modern state of Israel. This
is the day Israel declared its independence in 1948. Palestinians mark this
day as Al Nakba - the catastrophe. Christians, Jews, Muslims and people of
no particular faith gathered to remind those attending the celebrations that
until the occupation is ended and justice done in Palestine there will be
little chance of real peace.....
