The Love of God and Contemplative Prayer
When Vatican II deals with the universal call to holiness in its Document on
the Church, it identifies holiness with growth in love or charity. Charity,
which is the unselfish commitment to pleasing God in all our voluntary acts,
is the one absolute value in the Christian life. It alone gives value to all
the activities of the Church...

Archbishop's column: Honouring the pray-ers for the synod [June 2006]

Addresses from the Pentecost Synod 2006
The first plenary session of the Wellington Archdiocesan Synod 2006 held
from 2 to 4 June, heard a series of six speeches on each of the topics on
which the synod was focused. Here is the text of each speech...

Synod future statements
The six workshop groups were given the task of dreaming about what the
archdiocese might look like in five years' time. This activity took place on
the first day of the synod, Saturday 3 June. The statements about the future
were then presented to the full synod in the last plenary session of the
day. We bring them to you as they were presented to the synod delegates...

Pentecost synod lights fire in archdiocesan belly
A cry for more education and formation in faith and a recognition of social
justice as being at the heart of the gospel were among propositions that
came out of the Pentecost Synod held over Queen’s Birthday weekend in
Wellington.
Archbishop John Dew invited some 350 delegates from parishes and
archdiocesan organisations to plan with him for the future...

A synod full of the Spirit’s energy, joy and ideas â€" what the workshops said
The Pentecost Synod drew some 350 delegates from parishes, and the
archdiocese. They worked mainly in workshops throughout the weekend on six
topics. In all topic areas there was a recognised need for ongoing education
and formation in faith and for a recognition of social justice as being at
the heart of the gospel....

Synod a call to holiness to be Christ in our world
That we grow in holiness was Archbishop John Dew’s prayer in his final
homily of the synod. The reflection based on the words of St Paul, ‘in your
minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus’ suggested that we look at people
we dislike, and love them...

The subject of bullying in the workplace will be thrashed out in an informal

The country's largest builder is in the midst of a series of church jobs.
Fletcher Construction is part-way through the $12 million renovation of St
Patrick's Cathedral on Wyndham St in Auckland. Across at Ponsonby, it has
started work on the St Joseph's Mercy Hospice, the conversion of a building
which housed nuns but more recently boarders at St Mary's School. The 1950s
building in the school grounds is being converted into a hospice. Fletcher's
is gutting, refurbishing and re-roofing the house. It is extending the
building and installing elevators. Fletcher's South Pacific division has
built a string of Latter Day Saints churches in the past 30 years. And the
coincidence of working on so many church buildings has not been lost on the
builder, which says it is "going in pursuit of the holy nail".

listed as "choir contractor". King's latest instalment of Monteverdi's
choral music offers the much-recorded Vespers in its 1610 edition - a
sumptuous two-CD package, including two settings of the Magnificat and the
shorter Missa in illo tempore...

*** Sister Marie's story ***
[A few days ago, the Otago Daily times published three articles telling the
story of Sister Marie of the Little Sisters of the Poor - now in retirement
in Dunedin - who joined her Order just before World War II and was sent to
China, which was already at war with Japan. She was expelled from Shanghai
after the Japanese occupied the city and was sent to France, arriving in
1940, shortly before the German invasion. The second and third articles
(linked below) describe what happened when the Germans took over.]

Germans thought NZ nun a spy (photo)(2)
Otago Daily Times, Monday, 5th June 2006
http://tinyurl.com/zff59
The first few months after arriving at the Mother House in Brittany in May,
1940, were both exciting and frightening for the young New Zealand nun. She
was away from the horrors and responsibilities of Shanghai: she was back
safely among the religious of her Order but the threats once posed by the
Japanese were now assumed by the all-conquering Germans. France had become
an occupied country and Sister Marie had been pushed, in effect, from frying
pan to fire...

Sister Marie, shaking with fear, fatigue and cold, boarded the tram,

said, had the decency to decline it, surely feeling sorry for the sad,
bedraggled figure before her...
