Jim Hopkins: Worst violence is abortion
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/author/story.cfm?a_id=7&objectid=10425293
"What hasn't been said to date is that any morally consistent campaign to
eliminate violence against our babies - as Sue Bradford repeatedly calls
them - must begin where the violence is worst. And it must begin at the
beginning. By all means pass a law preventing us from beating our babies.
But only after you've passed a law preventing us from aborting those
babies..."

Irresponsible reporting on religion is dangerous
Normally I love writing this column, but this week I need to say something
that gives me no pleasure at all. Here it is in a nutshell: Reporting on
religion in the mainstream British press is not only sometimes dreadful,
it's dangerous, and something needs to be done about it...

From the February 2007 issue at http://www.welcom.org.nz/ ...

Archbishop Dew's column: 'Nightly reflection on the day'
"Wel-com readers have heard me say in different places and in varying
circumstances that one of my favourite websites is
http://www.gratefulness.org/ . On that website there is a link entitled “Meet
the Angel of the Hour, which is clearly based on the monastic hours of
prayer and the Prayer of the Church..."

Collaborative ministry: Petone and Eastbourne one year on
The archdiocese’s first parish led by a lay pastoral leader has made it
through the first year of life with colours flying and a sense of having
achieved all they needed to do.
Cushla Quigan was appointed to the Petone and Eastbourne parishes [part of
the Hutt Pastoral Area] in February last year amid feelings of considerable
apprehension that this was a big step into the unknown....

Synod 2006 salt and light together
When Archbishop John Dew called us together for Synod 2006 and exhorted us
to plan collaboratively, priest and people together, Salt and Light for
their communities, the Church, and the world, it seemed as if all we had to
do was believe it, and it would happen! So where are we on this journey, six
months after the promulgation of the synod document, the blueprint for our
diocese into the future? ...

More pastoral areas on stream
2007 a new year, a new beginning, and for us in the Archdiocese of
Wellington, with the announcement that three pastoral areas will be
operating in the near future, a realisation that it is not Church
organisation as we have known it for the past 50 years. Archbishop John Dew
has announced that the archdiocese’ next pastoral areas will become
operational in Newtown and Island Bay and in the Cathedral, Northland and
Karori parishes in July and Mt Victoria and Brooklyn in January 2008...

Ecology, justice and religion
Sean McDonagh, an Irish Columban missionary priest, is visiting New Zealand

Hutt. Though Sean describes himself as “just a missionary who is into
flowers, this Columban has a passion for the environment that is a
challenge to us all...

Weekly Analysis: Deep forces at work in Catholic-Jewish dialogue
Journalists are forever asserting that something "stands at a crossroads,"
and, truth to be told, often it's just a rhetorical device to lend drama to
whatever follows. Chronic overuse of the image, however, doesn't mean there
are no real crossroads, and today one can make a very good case that
Jewish/Catholic relations are fast arriving at one...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Weekly Analysis: Right and left join forces to oppose brave new world of
biotechnology
For some time, the politics of bioethics in the West has fueled deep
ideological polarization between a permissive left and a restrictive right.
That was the dynamic when the front-burner issues were abortion and birth
control, and it's still true of today's most agonizing debates, such as
embryonic stem cell research and end-of-life questions such as those
surrounding the Terry Schiavo case in Florida. But what if we project
forward 10 to 20 years, trying to anticipate what the front-line bioethical
debates will be then? Looking at what's happening in the biological
sciences, such questions may include cloning, life-extension treatments, the
creation of transgenic entities such as chimeras, the use of genetic
technology to "engineer" offspring with desirable intellectual and physical
capacities, and the widespread use of genetically modified foods...

'SHIP OF FOOLS' - 'The Mystery Worshipper' in New Zealand

http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/index.html

The UK Christian Website 'Ship of Fools' has a feature in which an anonymous
person visits a Sunday service at a church and afterwards writes a "view
from the pew" report for the Website. On the page of reports about
Australian and New Zealand churches (
http://ship-of-fools.com/Mystery/archive/oz_nz.html ), the visitors - and
the visited churches - seem mainly to be Anglican, although Christ the King
Church, Owairaka, is up there under '2007'. Really interesting reads. I
especially recommend (on the home page) the account of the visit to the
Czech Basilica of Strahov Monastery ("burnt down by Hussites in 1420, used
for target practice by the French in 1742, briefly shut down by
secularisation reforms in the 18th century, and officially closed until 1989
by the Communists.") ML

Weekly Analysis: Religious opposition to homosexuality increasingly a

A political decision in England this week marks a further step toward what
can only be called the criminalization of religious opposition to
homosexuality, a trend that poses deep challenges to the Catholic church --
not only in terms of legal exposure, but its capacity to articulate a
positive message on sexuality and the family...

Weekly Analysis: Abbe Pierre, French hero, dies at 94
As then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger himself observed in 1984, in the long run
of history, the best argument for Christianity is not its episcopacy but its
artists and its saints. The story of France's famed "Abbot Pierre," a priest
and tireless advocate for the homeless who launched the worldwide Emmaus
movement, and who died this week at 94, offers a vivid example of the
point...

Weekly Analysis: How to avoid the steamroller of cultural 'hybridization'
Traditionally, one element in the profile of a contender for the papacy, is
travel. You look for a cardinal who has moved around the world a bit, and
therefore has a sense of the global situation, not just his own particular
corner. Thus we come to Cardinal Angelo Scola of Venice and his visit this
week to the United States, including a session at the United Nations, to
discuss dialogue among Christians, Muslims and Jews...
