Early summer is campaign season in various corners of the world, including parliamentary races last week in the European Union and in Lebanon and today's hotly contested presidential race in Iran. Catholics to receive pastoral letter on prayer (29 May 2009)

"In its various forms, prayer is at once praise and thanksgiving, an appeal for mercy and our hope in time of need". These words are from a pastoral letter written by the New Zealand Catholic bishops to help Catholics towards a new appreciation of the relevance and accessibility of holiness – a focus of the bishops’ Pastoral Priorities plan for 2008-2013. The letter has been distributed to parishes around the country this week to be given out in churches on Pentecost Sunday, which is when the gift of the Holy Spirit is celebrated. Bishop Barry Jones of the Christchurch diocese says the booklet is a "gentle reminder to busy people about how crucial it is to foster the habit of prayer, without which our love for God cannot flourish" ....

Whenever an aging prelate pipes up on some controversial issue, he generally draws one of two reactions. Those who disagree will say, "This guy's an anachronism who doesn't realize the world has passed him by," while those who concur will sigh, "Too bad he had to wait until the end of his career to tell it like it is." I make it a point to listen to these guys for another reason: I think that anyone who's spent a lifetime of leadership in the church deserves a hearing...

It may not be an ancient cathedral, but St Joseph's church in Waitara could soon have similar status. The Nelson St building is being considered by New Plymouth District Council for addition to the district plan as a category A historic building, meaning it will have the highest possible protection. He was the kind of man you'd pass in the street without a second glance a good, solid, salt-of-the-earth type who'd always been able to support his family with his skills. New Zealand Herald — H003 — 16 May 2009
There aren't too many developers who can say the successful sale of their latest luxurious clifftop creation features in the prayers of 20 nuns. Award-winning builder-developers Nigel and Jackie Benton built this palatial new masonry home with panoramic sea views on land subdivided off the grounds of the neighbouring Catholic rest home. The Marian Rest Home is a small facility within spacious grounds, catering for elderly Catholic nuns and laywomen.

How can you counsel people who are pregnant and worried to keep their babies without moralizing? 4. How do you deal with friends who are sleeping together - how do we love them without condoning their actions? 5. When we give our lives to Christ do we really have to cease to exist as an individual?

Where it all started (photo)

'Icon" could be one of the most abused words in the English language. Its traditional religious meaning has long been drowned out by chatter about "iconic" this and "iconic" that, and there's no way that the quiet, and largely unnoticed, visit of an Australian man to Nelson this week could have done anything to rescue the word's original meaning and intent...

He issued a pastoral letter on the subject in 2000 called “As I Have Done For You,” presided over an archdiocesan synod in which ministry was a major focus, and sponsored three subsequent documents on leadership by the ordained and non-ordained, the role of a lay administrator in a priestless parish, and parish-based evangelization...
