The $64,000 question from Benedict's encyclical, and other Vatican goings-on

Now that Pope Benedict XVI's encyclical on the economy, Caritas in Veritate, is finally out, the predictable war of spin is well underway. Partisan reactions on both the Catholic left and right already seem clear, which might be referred to as the "Khrushchev letter" and the "Blue Meanies" strategies respectively.

A key to reading Benedict's social encyclical

Italians have a wonderful phrase, chiave di lettura, which literally means a "key to reading." It refers to some core idea, or perspective, that can help make sense of a complex mass of material. Since Benedict XVI's long-awaited encyclical on the economy is finally set to appear next Tuesday, it seems a good time to float a possible chiave di lettura for the document, which I can express in one word: synthesis...

Hard truths about Jews and Catholics

So far, 2009 isn't shaping up as a banner year in Jewish-Catholic relations. We've seen continuing fallout from the revival last year of a Good Friday prayer for the conversion of Jews, uproar over lifting the excommunication of a Holocaust-denying bishop, and a trip to the Middle East where the pope drew rave reviews everywhere but Israel. This week alone brought a new chapter in old debates over Pius XII, and a mini-fracas over a note from the U.S. bishops saying that Christ's message is meant for Jews too...

Largely because the bishops opted not to put the flap over Notre Dame and President Barack Obama on their public agenda, many media organizations, including every major secular news outlet in the country, took a pass. Catholics to receive pastoral letter on prayer (29 May 2009)

"In its various forms, prayer is at once praise and thanksgiving, an appeal for mercy and our hope in time of need". These words are from a pastoral letter written by the New Zealand Catholic bishops to help Catholics towards a new appreciation of the relevance and accessibility of holiness – a focus of the bishops’ Pastoral Priorities plan for 2008-2013. The letter has been distributed to parishes around the country this week to be given out in churches on Pentecost Sunday, which is when the gift of the Holy Spirit is celebrated. Bishop Barry Jones of the Christchurch diocese says the booklet is a "gentle reminder to busy people about how crucial it is to foster the habit of prayer, without which our love for God cannot flourish" ....

Vatican City (CNS) -- The embarrassment and scandal raised by each new report of a case of sex abuse in the church also has a positive effect of giving other victims the courage to come forward and increasing the church's commitment to ending abuse, said experts meeting at the Vatican. 'Remarkable congruence' between pope and president on Islam

If anyone is still puzzled about why the Vatican sat out the fuss over President Barack Obama's appearance at Notre Dame -- and more generally, why the Vatican has refused to allow its relationship with Obama to be defined by obvious differences over abortion -- the president's speech to the Muslim world yesterday in Cairo should go a long way toward clearing things up...
