Mary MacKillop to become Australia's first saint (February 21, 2010)

Pope Benedict XVI has announced that Mary MacKillop will be canonised on Sunday 17 October 2010. In December of last year the Pope recognised MacKillop's second miracle, which was the cure of a woman of inoperable lung cancer during the 1990s. The first was the cure of a woman of leukaemia in the 1950s..

A life spent tending those who had lost their way
http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/features/weekend/3479946/A-life-spent-tending-those-who-had-lost-their-way
The night before Teresa O'Connor was buried, friends and family gathered at the family home at Appleby to honour her. The reminiscences went on for a long time. Everyone had a story to tell about this singular woman whose life was a practical expression of her religious faith. Most touched on her concern for others, her hospitality and humour.

Memo to Munich: get it out now
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/memo-munich-get-it-out-now

Cardinal Sean Brady of Ireland, currently under fire for his role in an investigation of sex abuse claims against a priest in the 1970s, delivered a homily on St. Patrick's Day calling for a "sincere, wholehearted and truthful acknowledgement of our sinfulness," insisting that the Irish bishops must "own up to, and take responsibility for, any mismanagement or cover-up of child abuse." "We have to stop the drip, drip, drip of revelations of failure," Brady said. That's excellent advice, and especially pertinent at the moment for church officials in Munich.

Radio New Zealand Newswire - 09 Mar 2010 (full text)
The Catholic Church in New Zealand believes there's nothing to suggest priests in this country have been involved in sexual abuse during the past 20 years. Germany's justice minister yesterday criticised the Vatican for what she called a wall of silence over abuse allegations that emerged recently. Claims of sexual abuse are being investigated in 18 of Germany's 27 Catholic dioceses. The national director for professional standards for the Catholic Church in New Zealand, John Jamieson, says he has received some complaints from more than 20 years ago. But he says because they're historical, accused offenders are often dead by the time an investigation takes place.

One thought exercise I've come up with is this: Sit down and try to compile a list of the ten most consequential Catholic bishops in America. By that, I don't mean the bishops you like most or agree with, but those who seem to have the most impact...

Foreign priests and the risk of plunder
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/foreign-priests-and-risk-plunder

When their longtime pastor recently retired, the Catholics of Hill City feared they would become yet another circuit-rider parish. Instead, the Diocese of Salina was able to assign a Fidei Donum priest from Burma (Myanmar). Fr. Henry is thus a symbol of one of the most important forces cutting through American Catholicism at the retail level: Estimates are that one in six Catholic priests currently serving in the States comes from abroad, and roughly 300 new international priests arrive every year...

LENT 2010

Caritas Aotearoa NZ - http://www.caritas.org.nz

Lent: "Working together in true communion".

"The development of peoples depends, above all, on a recognition that the human race is a single family working together in true communion, not simply a group of subjects who happen to live side by side." - Pope Benedict XVI: 'Caritas in Veritate', 2009.

As we begin Lent, the reflection above reminds us of our common humanity and calling - and provides the inspiration for our Lenten theme "working together in true communion". The Lent Appeal is Caritas' main appeal of the year. Resources have been sent to schools and parishes.

Our schools' resource features the popular Lent Lifestyle Calendar and a songwriting competition. Our popular Reflection Programme is available in English, Samoan and Tongan. There is also additional scripture reflection and a Way of the Cross meditation. Find out more at http://www.caritas.org.nz

The most talked-about nun in America
http://ncronline.org/node/17123

A little over a year ago, Mother Mary Clare Millea became the most talked-about nun in America almost overnight. In December 2008, the Vatican tapped Millea, a Connecticut native and superior general of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to run arguably the most controversial "apostolic visitation" ever carried out in this country: A sweeping review of women's congregations, capping decades of tension about the state of the soul of religious life in America. On Tuesday, Millea sat down for an interview at the U.S. headquarters of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Hamden, Connecticut, where she's set up an office for the Apostolic Visitation.

A Dallas experiment in orthodoxy and openness
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/dallas-experiment-orthodoxy-and-openness

In Georges Bernanos' Diary of a Country Priest, the elderly Curé de Torcy gives his young priest friend a bit of advice about proclaiming the Gospel: "The Word of God is a red-hot iron," he says. "Truth is meant to save you first, and the comfort comes later." One could probably craft a meditation on the state of the Catholic soul today in terms of the tension between those two values -- truth and comfort. The $64,000 question is, can we do both? Can the Catholic church be both the "sacrament of the unity of the human race" and a fearless evangelical force? ...
